A tree moves towards the sky with a goal of growing and providing for the next generation of trees. Plus it connects with its neighbors through the roots it spreads.
While it is grounded it’s not complacent.

That story always kills me. How we don't all use "by the Tree of Ténéré" as a general purpose oath is beyond me
And even in solitude, it’s still pushing onwards, waiting for tomorrow to bring better days so its children can one day take root.
I think the church included sloth as a sin so the peasants would keep grinding and not be complacent to live off of their garden and enjoy their little lives.
That grind mentality.
Actually, we work harder than medieval peasants and the church specifically condemned working on Sundays.
Also the seven deadly sins predate Christianity.
Do you have a proper substantive source for the seven deadly sins predating Christianity?
I'm legitimately curious here, because I can't find anything that supports that claim.
I'm pretty sure I read something a while ago which drew a connection between Socrates to Aristotle's Golden Mean, something about Plato, and then that being the inspiration for the seven.
That's very interesting.
I agree that it's very possible, likely even, that the Christian seven deadly sins were heavily influenced by virtue ethics, the golden mean, etc. But the statement "the seven deadly sins predates Christianity" doesn't feel right imo.
While yes, the concept of virtues, identifying and espousing them definitely predate Christianity, the "seven deadly sins" is a very specific thing. While similar, they aren't the same so you cant really say that the concept of the seven deadly sins existed specifically before it was developed and spread by Christianity.
I don't think you're trying to say that the seven deadly sins specifically predate Christianity, just that the concept of identifying negative and detrimental traits and behaviours do. But it's easy to think you are conflating those at a glance. (Or maybe you are, I don't actually know.)
I read somewhere that they were originally about what distracts you from the gods and doing good, and it was some Greek philosopher. Like I said, it's been a while. Maybe my brain made it up and I'm misremembering.
Valid points, and I agree that the "packaging" of vices into this format of "7 deadly sins" is traceable to early Christian origins.
You've also conceded that this format is clearly rooted on the earlier Hellenistic vice/virtue framework, so I'll call the 7 deadly sins a "dark age one pager", meant for monks and other people of simpler minds.

I think they are based on ancient Greek virtue ethics or something. I couldn't find the paper I read about it a while ago though.

That's what sloth as a sin is meant to imply.
That makes sense, I feel it’s called a sin because it will warp your life for the worse if it takes root and hold of you.
I feel it wouldn’t necessarily start as depression, but that seems like one of the likely outcome of giving in to that form of escapism.
It’s ‘easy’ to do nothing, but after a while of consistently choosing that you’re slowly getting buried by consequences, until you finally have enough of letting it get out of control but now struggle to fix the mountain of issues you’ve built up.
Yes I suspect that the original intent here was less about supernatural brownies points and much more about harmful lifestyle traps. The seven deadly sins seem to me to be mental compulsions that can lead to fixated and broken lifestyles without awareness or pushback. Like feeling sexual attraction is great, but not if your day to day life is focused solely on it. Relaxation and rest is great, but can lead to stagnation if not unchecked.
I'm not saying the Bible or Torah or other such texts weren't legitimately religious scripture to the devout, but they were also basically the popular self help books of the time as well, as I understand things
Yes, also important to note that generally they were called the deadly sins because once you committed them you were damned forever. So the "actual" sin they convey is the extreme of any of them.
So the "deadly" part of sloth was not laying around the house one day. It was the commitment to a life of sadness and self-pity. Greed is not desiring personal wealth, it's when you start destroying other people's lives to enrich yourself etc.
That is the cheap ass philosophy I would expect from a fast food restaurant
