Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

alt textScreenshot of a Twitter post by @sirocyl: "what's a good hex editor - preferably for windows - for annotating structs and stuff? I'd normally use audacity but I figure there's gotta be something better for this." Attached to the post is a screenshot of Audacity showing two tracks, one of a binary file being interpreted as audio, zoomed-in at the sample level where individual bits can be edited, and a label track with labels such as "IMGDATA_MAGIC", "IMGDATA_FILE_NAME (1)", "Width (1)" and "Height (1)".

Blender can probably do that

The owner of x did say he wants to make it the everything app, but im not sure its there yet

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 1 points 5 hours ago

It's really not bad at video editing, though surprisingly it has issues with keyframing. KDEnlive is currently king

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 hour ago

Yeah, you can just import some random file as raw data and then tell it how to interpret it. I would recommend importing as 8 bit mono.

They may steal your computer but they will never find your files

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 4 points 7 hours ago

I hear the video editing part of blender is actually decent for casual use.

[–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 9 hours ago

When I was a kid wanting to get into YouTube (all evidence of which has been scorched off the face of the earth), Blender wasn't actually that bad of a video editor.

Good idea 👀

If you don't mind using openscad with it, it actually works quite well. 😁

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 8 hours ago

I built myself a toolmaking script with openjscad. So it was kinda my primary CAD for a few weeks anyway.

[–] cepelinas@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 hours ago

Ok then, cad by printing a model with octoprint, by pressing the move buttons no custok gcode.

[–] MadBits@europe.pub 9 points 20 hours ago

Gonna print myself a shirt with these

[–] nehal3m@lemmy.zip 41 points 22 hours ago

Let me sing you the executable of my people.

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 5 points 15 hours ago

Unironically I use it in my glitchart pipeline lol

ImHex (https://github.com/WerWolv/ImHex) is the answer but I fear showing OOP that program might lock them into hyperfixation until they starve.

[–] Overwrite7445@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 hours ago

ImHex is amazing. I use it as a save game editor mostly.

I've gotten stuck in the hyperfixation of building pattern files for old video game save files to the point where I'm vibrating from low blood sugar after not eating for 10 hours a few times now... That and when trying to figure out the save logic in ghidra when the game is using some ancient version of C

Having a complete pattern file for a game save is such a good feeling, able to open the file, apply the pattern, and then browse the data in a tree structure to easily do save editing etc.

[–] DataCrime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 22 hours ago

You have to check it out though! There's so much there, including some possibilities for automating OPs workflow. This sort of stuff is outside my wheelhouse but it's got automated patern detection, options to run a fancy disassembler that does the job for you. And the UI is so slick! I just leave it up as eye candy sometimes 🤓

[–] DeadDigger@lemmy.zip 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I don't get it, I am tired l, pls enlighten me

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 10 points 19 hours ago

ImHex is a very good hex editor. My "joke" if you can call it that, was that the type of person who'd use audacity as a hex editor would be so enamored by the vast array of features in ImHex they'd never stop playing around to it to the point of starving because they'd forget to eat.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 40 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Notepad++ it has what windows lacks

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 1 day ago (2 children)

notepad++ lets you do hex editing too? that's pretty cool!

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 1 day ago

Yep, it's an official plugin!

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Notepad++ can work as a full IDE with the right plugins at this point lol

[–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 9 hours ago

ed could work as an IDE too

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 4 points 19 hours ago

I did use it as full IDE with some plugins for some months

Nerds: Well akshully . . .

Musical Nerds: AUDACITY!

[–] RedSnt@feddit.dk 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Speaking of Audacity, they've come a long way, and recently released version 4. It's moving into more pro looking DAW territory. Reaper better watch out 😅

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah but the problem is from i understand it lacks exactly the features that would make it a daw. If it had midi and automation i think i could actually use it as a daw. I might check it out one day but they only had version 4 as an appimage last time i checked.

[–] Paulemeister@feddit.org 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Check out the videos of their lead tentacrul. He also did the Muse score redesign. As I understood, they are moving slowly as the codebase is a mess. First they cleaned up the toolbars, changed to non destructive clip editing then switching to qt improved it to the state it is now in. As I understood it, the audio engine is shit so they plan to rip it out and redo it. Midi support is a highly requested feature and I think it will definitely come, but only after everything that's Audacity is used for is the best it can be. Then the DAW features will be build (they already include tempo, time signaturea etc)

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 hours ago

Oh wow i will watch it and that sounds very good. To be honest even if they only add midi i would already use it for some tasks over other daws but i understand that its a lot of work to fix up such an old codebase. Still, maybe in the next few years we will get a linux daw that isnt a chore to use.

for annotating, just print on paper and use a pencil
