You use subtitles because you couldn't hear what they just said, I use subtitles because I wasn't paying attention to what they just said, we're not the same.

As a hard-of-hearing person, I need either subtitles, or super-loud volume. But bad sound-mixers in todays movies make everyone mumble right before giant explosions.

And I really hate that Meta fucked up smart-glasses for everyone. We could have had IRL subtitles for people like me on local-only glasses, that don't record people, but they had to make it creepy.

AppleTV has a feature where they turn on subtitles for ten seconds when you hit the back button. Everyone should copy this.

Not as much as I hate having several options that are badly out of sync, though. That's the kind of thing that'll make me give up on a show/movie entirely.

Last Week Tonight has a bad habit of having subtitles lag behind for a while, and then speed through a few sets to catch up.

My ADHD wife and I were watching The Fifth Element on Netflix the other day. It's one of those movies that I've seen a hundred times growing up, so lots of parts are just etched into my brain. There were multiple times that the subtitles were straight up wrong, and it ruined the joke, so I had to correct the subtitles so my wife would "hear" the punchline properly. Absolutely delightful movie though; funny, dramatic, great pacing, good action, interesting futuristic sci-fi elements, Gary Oldman doing his chameleon thing to disappear into a character... Perfect popcorn movie.

I hate having subtitles when I don't want them. My eyes keep being drawn to reading them and it's very distracting when you want to concentrate on the content itself.

Yeah, I think there is a misunderstanding.

You are probably talking about hard-subs or full subtitles that are enabled by default.

"Forced subtitles" specifically refers to subtitle that translate only non-default language or signs (like when someone speaks Spanish in an English movie).

Can you elaborate on why for the later?

If you're watching a movie in English and the bad guys are suddenly speaking a few lines of Russian to each other, why would you not want subtitles for that? Or if the movie shows a sign in a foreign language? It's often integral to the plot to have that information.

Forced Subs are just that - substantial are always forced on.

Now which ones are forced on depends in the video and player.

I hate subtitles incrusted in the video itself, like Tiktoks style on youtube shorts etc.

If I want subtitles, I'll click sur subtitles button. Now there is this giant text flashing in the middle, that I absolutely no need to read to understand as I understand well enough; but that flashing text make me not see what is shown.

I don't understand how it makes people more attentive to have this text, because of these I focus on the text itself rather than what it's talking about or what is shown on the video; and CAN'T F*CKING ignore them cause of TDAH wanting me to see that moving thing just here

Those are "hardsubs" and they are indeed the worst.

But "force subtitles" is something you actually want to have by default. They are the ones that translate languages other than the default languages (like when someone speaks Spanish in an English movie).
