A massive Apple shill I know argues that "they are Apple users, so anybody willing to profit from them should, of course, pay Apple".

He wasn't joking. Or smart.

I propose I get a 15% cut of purchases made outside of Apple's platform too

It's "its investments in the tools, technology, and services that allow it to maintain its App Store and software." is entirely money it's spent to monopolize the application market on the phones it sells. Fuck the App Store and fuck the ridiculous hoops you have to jump through to get an app on an Apple phone, even for testing. And of course Google sees that and is trying to go down exactly the same road.

A good Linux phone can't happen soon enough.

Ooh, yeah! Me, too!

I propose I get 27% of Apple's profits. To keep them safe.

how would this remotely be enforcible? are they going to sue companies for charging the wrong price based on user agent?

Imagine you are making $$$ from your app or site.

One day you get an email "we'll remove your app because we found out you didn't pay us enough protection money. There is no appeal, we are a trillion dollar company, whatcha gonna do?".

You instantly lose half of your income in the best case, 100% in the worst case. There is no alternative app store for iPhones outside of the EU.

DMA is supposed to fix this, but it's only for the EU, and look at how Apple tried to spite the EU with their "compliance".

Developers can release their work as a web app instead of going through Apple’s store. Alternative stores aren’t actually required. The EU does not have a great record of understanding the impacts when it comes to their technology laws. We all have that annoying pop up. Where is the next cable standard going to come from now that everyone is forced to use usb-c? Technology development and market reactions outside the EU

[–] ThomasWilliams@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Nope. Apple blocks those apps.

What? Apple allows PWAs, though only with Safari as far as I know.

Its the app store that's the issue. its apple preventing third party distribution on their platforms. no one cares about the store itself its the active and hostile approach apple takes to preventing distribution to their devices that doesnt go through their overly priced shitty store/payment systems. Webapps are not comparable to native applications for all situations.

Apple being Apple.

Anyone surprised?
