Beavers built a dam in Alberta (850 meters) that is twice the length of the Hoover Dam. It isn't the technical marvel as the Hoover Dam, but one would have to be lying to say it's not impressive.

Extra info: we know it has existed since at least 1975, as it's visible in arial photographs. (Many from space).

So 50+ years for rodents maintaining a project seems pretty neat.

Also over in Europe sometime in the last several years, some beavers completed a dam that had been stalled in the planning and funding phase. The beavers just rolled up and in 24 hours with $0 in funding and built a dam in almost the exact spot that the planners were going to build them anyway.

Yeah after we slaughtered them to near extinction, it sounds like they are making a good comeback. (Fur hats and anal gland perfume have different yearning these days)

[–] nforminvasion@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We still use anal gland stuff for cheap, faux vanilla flavoring 🤮🤮

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

This vanilla tastes like ass!

For those curious, here's a great write-up

I can't imagine traveling that terrain any time other than winter; the muskeg is super tough to travel through when it's not frozen and the mosquitoes would suck you dry.

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mainstream archeologists would like you to believe that.
But the truth will come out - it was aliens.

[–] Archimedes@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

What about infinite beavers?

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

What's with the weirdly large rolled up flag on top of the building? Or is it something that's been painted?

Dunno for sure but assume they unroll it for special occasions.

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Ok, but what about two beavers?

[–] MunkyNutts@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago
[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 3 points 2 days ago

This has "big government" written all over it. You can't convince me otherwise.

[–] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

What gave it away? A lack of wood, maybe?

[–] realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Am I tripping or is that the real life version of the damn in GTA V?

[–] VonReposti@feddit.dk 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is the Hoover Dam, the GTA V dam is based on Pacoima Dam and Morris Dam

[–] realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hm, thanks. Looked very similar with the geography around it

The canyon and the river?

[–] myotheraccount@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Of course, they built it for the goats!

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

Pretty sure beavers made humans build it. Who domesticated whom?

[–] comador@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Welcome to Utah ...

[–] tio_bira@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Is this Hoover Dam ? I only knew it from New Vegas

[–] BigDaddySlim@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Patrolling the Mojave almost makes me wish for nuclear winter

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The picture is beautiful and captured how big and grandiose the dam is. New Vegas didn't manage to make the dam awe inspiring. There is a rumour of remaking New Vegas and hopefully that they re-skin and enlarge the scale of the dam.

[–] BigDaddySlim@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

New Vegas and Fallout 3 remasters are confirmed, as well as Obsidian working on another Fallout with Bethesda oversight and Fallout 5 in pre production with production ramping up after Elder Scrolls 6 releases.

[–] menjoo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

No, a vacuum cleaner build this!

[–] SpongyAneurysm@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

Huh-huh, huh. Is this the god dam? Huh-hu, huh, huh-huh.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Can we get some dam nachos at the dam gift shop?

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago
