Being good at science has led to having an expensive hobby... in my case anyway haha

Yeah, I've got many expensive hobbies now. It's a bit cheaper if you can do it all yourself/make your own equipment

No, the cost cost goes up sharply.

Phase Hobby Cost
1 Crochet $100
2 3d Printer $250
3 Soldering station $400
4 Homelab $1000
5 custom eBike, LLC, self-hosted website 6 - 10k
6 Paramotor $22k + $1.5k/yr

The deeper you get into engineering, weather, networking, software dev, academia the more your hobbies cost. This is also ignoring the cost of acquiring all that knowledge first (at least $100k at a state school).

At this point I have to ask if you're doing a hobby or starting a business, because these are not the same thing.

I didn't say it didn't? I said it's a bit cheaper if... I can tick off a bunch of those, some for more than you've listed, and plenty of others

Self-hosted website looks too expensive, unless you paid someone to make it. I host FoundryVTT for my group, and the only paid thing was Foundry itself and my internet-connected PC I already had.

Public IP? No need to pay extra. DuckDNS when you're not behind CG-NAT or Cloudflare ZeroTrust reverse proxy when you do or have no access to your router.
Domain? I've seen at least two sites that provide them for free - digitalplat and the other I can't remember.
