I saw the Odyssey the other day and thought it was great. Though it did make me laugh seeing trailers beforehand for Dune part 3 and Spiderman which both feature Zendaya, who also plays Athena in the Odyssey.
I've got nothing against her and Tom Holland, but it does take me out of the narrative a bit when it's the same few actors in every film. I'd love to see more with lesser known actors.
Every damn time i see tom holland i don't see the character of the film but i see spider man in [insert X scenario] π
It's so boring, i mean i would also watch the movie if there wasn't a side character, or if the main character was the villain, or if Zendaya was the only character. Idgaf about the amount of characters in a movie.
After seeing The Bavkrooms and Obsession, i realised how refreshing it is to not see the same actors over and over.
The fact that itβs the same people over and over again is exactly why Iβm not going to see the Odyssey. Iβm so fucking sick of Matt Damon. Like I donβt even have anything against him as a person or an actor, Iβve just been seeing him in every other fucking film since I was in junior high and Iβm sick of it.
In fairness I think Matt Damon did a good job in this role; but I totally get what you mean
They aren't particularly good actors either (which is why you see them and not their character), they are just cast for their name. Which is strange, as Nolan had good casting in the past and certainly doesn't need that kind of boost, but perhaps they want to grab a younger audience?
Zendaya came out of nowhere so she can stare at a camera in the wind for a few minutes of screen time. She's a pretty face, and that seems to be all she had going for her for the longest time. I literally don't know if she can act, because I've never seen her acting for more than a few seconds at a time in the movies I've seen.
Holland made a good spider man I think, but like so many, not a good Peter Parker. I think Toby was the best parker.

I've seen some of it.
I've also seen a LOT of shows with better actors, none of whom were shoved into a ton of movie roles in a short period of time the same way.
They probably don't have a similar cult following and/or not such a pretty face, granted - but she did not come out of nowhere and she can act is what i am saying.
I've seen her on TV shows and stuff so I know she's a better actor than Holland. But still not what I'd call a generational talent or anything. The obsession is a bit odd.
It's difficult to criticize Zendaya without being mistaken for a chud who is still upset over a POC MJ.
Simple: just don't bring up her role as MJ. Honestly I don't understand why so many people get bent out of shape over the actors skin color not matching their mental image, or previous portrayals. Oh no, her skin color is a little darker than it was in a comic book oh nooooooo.
They're fictional characters in a fictional world.
Its like all the people complaining about the little mermaid and how "she wasn't black!" motherfucker you are arguing about the skin tone of a MERMAID.
Zendaya has plenty of other mediocre roles to pick from.
Funny thing is, I really first noticed how little she's on screen because of Dune, and I think pt 2 has her best acting I've seen. She just isn't as good in a lot of other stuff.
I always thought Topher Grace would have been a good peter parker. I still cannot believe they had him play Eddie Brock though.
I think he'd make a good spider man, but it really is hard to nail down that Peter Parker quality and still be a good spider man. Toby was the one I think hit the nail on the head. Nerdy, not a loner type but just not necessarily widely accepted socially, awkward.
Maybe I just haven't seen TG in enough stuff, but I think he'd be a good pick.
If I had money and a time machine, I'd go back and have them do a movie with Toby as Parker, and Topher as spider man. Have them train for a few months so that have more similar bodies to make it more convincing.
My opinion was mostly based off how he played Eric in That 70s Show. It's very possible I could be wrong, and he's too old now anyway.
I had a hard time not picturing Tom Holland as Spider-Man while watching the Odyssey. The trailers didnβt help lol
Yeah any film with the 2 of them in it just takes me out of the story. Idk why but I just cannot get immersed if I see any of them.

Is it worth watching on a big screen while knowing next to nothing about the source material? (I downloaded the epub. 1000+ pages. Yep, that's gonna take a while)
I enjoyed Oppenheimer more in my computer chair and computer monitor vs the big screen and boring chair. Plus at home I can freely pause and get snacks.
I saw it in IMAX, and I honestly don't think it would have mattered to me if I'd seen it in a regular theater. It still feels like an event that would be missing something if I'd seen it at home first, but it was lacking any real visual spectacle. It's a well-made film, but there were no blockbuster holy shit eyecandy moments.
That's one of two major gripes I have with the movie.
My second gripe is entirely to do with a pretty egregious diversion from the source material, specifically with Athena. Zendaya is great, but Athena is supposed to wear a helmet. That's her whole look. Having a helmetless Athena is like if they'd given the cyclops two eyes.
So your lack of knowledge about the source material won't work against you, and seeing it on a small screen should be fine if that's what you're into.
Knowing anything about source material just seems to irritate people.
Watching it as a standalone film, it's just some big flashy set pieces, and too many bad things happening to dogs for no good reason.
I'm told it's definitely worth it. None of my friends remember the book. They enjoyed it.
For the Odyssey? Yes, it's a great and entertaining film. It's not really historically acurate or anything, but it is fun and the actors do a great job. Depending what type of movie enjoyer you are, you might wanna watch it in the theatres. Personally, for action movies I emjoy the cinema the most, for slower movies I enjoy them at home the best.
Man, the whole "historically accurate" aspect is where everyone should suspend disbelief. Giant cyclop's, sirens, and God's aren't real either... and that was the most badass looking representation of King Agamemnon I've seen. That includes Brian Cox!

No, not awfully accurate to the source material. BUT it's not actually history, so... that part stands for me. Artistic license is okay in my book.
In my opinion accuracy is not as important as authenticity and that isn't really given in the Odyssey. All the costumes I have seen until now of it look like bad generic fantasy cosplays and the mythological beings without any god showing onscreen is also a weird decision. The gods are important figures in the epos.

If you were thinking about it I recommend Imax, but it leaves Imax after this Thursday. Most movies only get a few weeks in Imax before the next new movie takes its place. It was really good and the experience was worth going out for. I loved Oppenheimer as well, but seeing it at home was definitely ok for that one.
70mm showings at least are coming back in September
I checked the closest imax 70mm by me and that one doesnt seem to be leaving like the regular imax ones are.
