If you want it to actually work, tag @remindme@mstdn.social

I'm not sure how to set the time from here though.

“crazy refresh pull” is the latest annoying slop comment the kids are posting

[–] Dookieman12@piefed.social 31 points 3 weeks ago

Also, "How could the algorithm hide this from me for a whole [however old the video was when they clicked on it]" when the video was uploaded minutes ago

[–] 0x0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)
[–] defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Many mobile apps have a "pull to refresh" feature where you swipe up to the top of whatever list you're looking at and then swipe up even further to refresh the whole feed. A "crazy refresh pull" is when said content appears on the newly refreshed feed and the user finds it enjoyable in a way they find to be extraordinary, or at the very least, better than average.

[–] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's how gambling mechanics get hardwired into our brains.

[–] defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

It's more exploiting the existing dopamine addiction tendancies that humans already have rather than gambling specifically.

[–] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago

I bet.

(sorry)

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

'Pull' also refers to a 'win' in a gamified gambling sense.

In the context of opening a loot box or a prize card deck in a gatcha game, the 'pull' is what you draw out, and so a "crazy pull" would be a very desirable, rare or extremely lucky item.

[–] deranger@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

This was always my interpretation, rather than the swipe down to refresh action.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

On smartphones, when you are on a webpage or in this case YouTube you can refresh the page/view by tap and hold the top of the page/view and then pull down a bit and then release. That's the so called refresh pull.

Apparently it comes in various rarity level like a mythic refresh pull.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The mythic refresh pull is when you accidentally refresh, when there was actually something you’re super interested in, and now you can’t find it anymore.

~Not that I’m speaking from experience or anything. 😅~

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

Isn’t that the angry refresh pull?

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Or when the app does it automatically after you switched to another app

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This is actually incorrect.

The word "pull" comes from gacha games and it means getting a rare reward by rolling the dice.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 7 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

that may be true, but pull doesn't originate from gacha games either, but from TCG Booster Packs, where you literally pull cards of various rarity from the pack.

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Slot machines would like a word

[–] RaphaelSchmitz@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Lol TCGs are just gacha without a computer I guess

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

no, that would be Gachapon.

[–] RaphaelSchmitz@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

Lol TCGs are just gachapon without asian I guess

[–] bluecario@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

It's my mission in life to downvote (YouTube Revanced) every one of those comments.

Anyone else still just using a poop knife in 2026?

[–] FRYD@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I guess it’s dumb to comment like that. Not gonna lie though, it’s wild to make a whole meme and comments dogging on it.

[–] trem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think, it comes from a general frustration, because the YouTube comment section is practically unusable for actually discussing a video.

Every so often, I watch something and want to see what people are saying about a particular section in the video. Like, maybe I was hoping for some info in the video and expect someone to have posted it in a comment instead.

But then I have to scroll through tons of comments like:

  • "First!" (Followed by people telling them they're not actually first.)
  • Various comments about how they're watching the video shortly after its publication. Or long after its publication.
  • "What an inspiring video! Blah blah blah..." (with a profile picture of a half-dressed lady, because it's actually just a bot)
  • A verbatim quote of a funny sentence in the video with nothing added.
  • "Just commenting for the algorithm!"

Like, I don't want to hate on people commenting what they like, but it's just frustrating in that situation, because you do have to read every comment, to make sure you're not missing something. You just become acutely aware of every repeated joke and every single comment you had to read, which did not actually say something.

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Thats because YouTube changed their algorithm to fix the toxic cesspool it was before.

So now it only shows the most vapid, hollow, flowery drivel anyone says.

I'm not sure the fault really lies with the 12 year old saying "first". I get why its irksome though.

[–] trem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago

Ah, had not heard that before, but I'm willing to believe it right away.

That just sounds like a very Google thing to do, like how they tweaked the video algorithm, so that longer videos would get more visibility, not long before TikTok took off and they had to introduce a separate category for short-form videos.

[–] M137@lemmy.today 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

This post would have been relevant 3 years ago. We're also mostly past "babe wake up, * posted a new video". It's mainly "crazy refresh pull" now, a mix of "this is AI" when it's clearly not and bot comments who get thousands of likes and hundreds of replies.
