Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1872 readers
258 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

Some acronyms you might see.

I don't understand how Patrick hiding a DDOS attack in his "goodbye" message isn't grounds for banning his alts on that server according to their policy. It literally is breaking the law in many countries

Edit: for that matter, .world should consider the same for his alts there

How many do you think he's got? I swear I just found one called Eristalis created a day ago lol

[–] Pandantic@midwest.social 47 points 1 month ago

James R Kirk - he was posting like an impartial observer on Fediverse vs Disinformation @db0 in a breakdown of the ban list thread. Things like:

The dev posted a response in c/Tesseract but you're mostly correct. They wanted to make it easier for like minded future admins to be able to spin up a Lemmy instance without having to know all of the lore.

Then when people called him out he started becoming a frothing troll.

Pretty sure the dude saying how everyone who blew up over the shitlist was doing illegal shit is one too

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Doing illegal shit is a requirement for being a human rights activist in the USA today.

I just think it's hilarious that instead of "saving" the fediverse they fractured it. Whiney bitches love to break shit then whine about it being broken.

[–] ProbablyUnwise@anarchist.nexus 75 points 1 month ago (6 children)

I would say they've brought the fediverse together like never before. I don't think this many people have agreed on a single thing in the history of fedi.

I mean, does it really count as separate drama or a continuation of existing drama?

Continuation for sure.

[–] Redjard@reddthat.com 138 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The whole "you violated our policy but we can't tell you how you violated it" thing has heavy big-tech gaslighting vibes.

[–] Redjard@reddthat.com 81 points 1 month ago

It even has the "here is a link to the entirety of our policy" trope. Like com'on, bruh, this is actually making me angry just reading it regardless of context.
I loathe that sort of shit.

That's because they were the star trek mods from reddit pre-apicalypse. Not having duplicate communities in Reddit and all power concentrated into one mod group or even worse one person is what attracted me to Lemmy in the first place. Not all, but from what I've seen, former mods from Reddit tend to have the entitlement of my community should be the only community.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 115 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (13 children)

I made a single comment asking how someone can be anti-trans and a fascist boot licker but also a star trek fan.

Guess who I asked.

[–] thal3s@sh.itjust.works 35 points 1 month ago

Thanks for asking. I have the same questions!

That was my first instance. Turns out it's the star trek has gotten too woke kind of people running it?! Ah well, llap 🖖

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 41 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I think they actually use star trek as a cover to find leftist and trans people to add the to their list

So when do instances start defederating startrek.website since they clearly want to be alone?

[–] Redjard@reddthat.com 76 points 1 month ago (1 children)

lemy.lol has announced to defederate 30 minutes ago and is currently defederated.

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 48 points 1 month ago

And much respect to them for how they handled this/themselves.

Glad I already deleted my account there. And blocked the instance.

Shame, but I'd rather not be around members of a fandom that actively support shitty and shady practices like that, and I sure as FUCK don't want an admin that's complicit

explicitly allows discussions about hurting people

Remember kids, wishing death upon mass murderers makes you just as bad as them actually.

Edit: to the coddled, enlightened brunchers incapable of reading the room, itching to have their righteous moment under my comment: next time the IDF starts randomly airstriking the shit out of my quaint little (Christian no less) town, I personally invite you to join me for coffee and contemplating mortality on my veranda. I’ll be so impressed by your opinion on the lives of the people who are dropping WAR ORDINANCE around you and consider me a terrorist because of where I’m from (and you one for sitting for coffee with me). It’ll be so inspiring. You’ll love it, I make decent coffee. Wouldn’t that be fun.

I mean at least it is an instance doing the defederation and announcing it publicly (so people who don't like this can leave). This also makes a great example for people who don't understand the difference between banning lists in apps vs instances.

[–] sorghum@sh.itjust.works 49 points 1 month ago

I'm not surprised. They were shit mods back on reddit and continue their shitty ways here in the fedi

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 48 points 1 month ago

I guessed I'd be seeing something here with the bans and removals that started cropping up in that thread...

100% PTB. Just removing anyone who is pointing out that its related to tesseract, a total lie, etc.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 47 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is this the same Star Trek instance that had some huge drama with The Picard Manuever (? Maybe it was someone else?) that led to a user exodus? Or a different one?

[–] cm0002@lemy.lol 53 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Idk probably, the admins and mods over there are always power tripping about something.

There was also the whole Stamets writeup last year about their bs to

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 40 points 1 month ago (5 children)

God, Stamets must be sitting there giggling into their icecream rn. Canary in the coal mine

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 36 points 1 month ago (3 children)

No ice cream, alas. Wouldn't mind some though. But giggling? Yeah.

I'm willing to bet he's an admin or mod on there 🤣

When I read the summary of the rant he made about "leaving" first thing I thought was "sure buddy". There's no way someone like that doesn't have at least one alt, if only for testing development of their program.

Who knows how bad the infestation is of alts.

You'd think they'd keep a lower profile after breaking a federal law in the country they're in.
