Welcome to /c/birding, a community for people who like birds, birdwatching and birding in general! Feel free to post your birding photos or just photos of birds you found in general, but please follow the rules as outlined below.
This should go without saying, but please be nice to one another. No petty insults, no bigotry, no harassment, hate speech, nothing of that sort! Depending on the severity, you'll either only get your comment removed and a warning or your comment will be removed and you will be banned from /c/birding.
This is a community for posting content of birds, nothing else. Please keep the posts related to birding or birds in general.
When posting photos or videos that you did not take, please always credit the original photographer! Link to the original post on social media as well, if there is one.
Absolutely no AI-generated content is allowed! I know it has become quite difficult to tell whether or not something is AI-generated or not, but please make sure that whatever you post is not AI-generated. If it is, your post will be removed. If you continously post AI-generated content, you'll be banned from /c/birding (but it's obviously okay if you post AI-generated stuff once or twice without knowing you did so).
Please provide rough information location, if possible. This is a more loosely-enforced rule, especially because it is sometimes not possible to provide a location. But if you post a photo you took yourself, please provide a rough location and date of the sighting.

Explain the joke plz?
It’s a PET bottle lid that is attached to the bottle so you don’t lose it, a unique piece of their culture I guess lol
And an annoying one. Gets in the way, and makes screwing the cap back on harder because it keeps pulling it.
Meh, I am not in the EU but have these bottle caps. The initial annoyance is easy to overcome and I love it.
disagree. I love them.
The EU introduced a policy mandating that plastic lids must be permanently attached to bottles, which came into effect a year or so ago.
The law has been controversial. While some hail it for keeping the environment free of lids, others find the attached lids cumbersome.
Personally, I feel that the lid is not cumbersome at all (just flip the lid over and drink from the other side to avoid splashing?), and having fewer lonely bottle caps littered everywhere is generally quite good!
And if people dislike the lids enough to avoid drinking from single-use plastic bottles, hey, that's another benefit! Especially for regions where the tap water is drinkable (e.g. Germany)
I much prefer the birds over the people =w=
I mean, most of the people on there have 0 relevancy to my country, and I imagine it's not an uncommon sentiment elsewhere. Birds at least don't exclude a bunch of countries
I also quite like the vertical/portrait orientation designs in there, I think it would be a cool change
I tell you 100% of those people have 0 relevancy to my and many other EU countries
Funny, I was about to say I've never seen a single one of the spieces depicted in the image. 😂
Well the 50 is a white stork, actually the national bird of my country :3 we have (or used to have back when I learned it in school) the highest nesting density of storks :3 and also a holiday about celebrating storks
The others I believe are:
I've seen a few of those in the wild, but definitely not all :3
FYI, Design B has the names of the birds printed on the notes, and you're correct about all of them.
https://www.ecb.europa.eu/euro/banknotes/future_banknotes/html/design-proposals.en.html
Portugal? All the storks and enormous nests balanced on everything is hilarious, I love it.
Lithuania :3
We have the same thing with stork nests on everything tho
That would be my bird criticism too. I recognized 4/6 people on the notes but have no idea what these birds are or where they live. I would expect crows, magpies, swallows, seagulls or even those green parakeets that are technically invasive but are all over Europe.
It's crazy and unacceptable we didn't get a corvid.
I definitely like the birds more than the fictional bridges
Makes sense, since money also isn’t real.
There's a reason they call it a flock of cameras.
Birds > people
Putting actual people on banknotes... Have we learned nothing from metoo? WTF?!
Eels said it best: "I like birds"
Been listening to that song the whole time I was voting.
Im not even that big on birds but the bird designs are so much better than the people ones and also in general i dont think people on banknotes are that good of an idea. Birds on the other hand are something we can all relate to and should think about more cause many species are in danger.
Many of the people designs felt like they were for a corporate convention/seminar, or maybe a local library, not an EU banknote. Bravo to them for trying something new, but on the other hand, ew.
And most of the bird designs had buildings 😢
Of course, the birds need toilets!
Not most of them, all had buildings, and it's always the same buildings, too. The buildings are those of the seven official institutions of the EU.
Personally, once I figured that out (and it took me a minute), I much preferred the buildings to the seemingly random scenes on the backs of designs with the famous people. One of the designs also shows the names of the institutions (and birds), which I particularly liked.
I like that the bank is more valuable than the commission and the parliament.
I think the reasoning is probably opposite to that, because there are more of the smaller notes in circulation. So you'll probably see multiple 5€ every day, but you'll rarely see a 200€ unless you work in banking or organized crime. I also vaguely remember a survey from years back that showed that the 5€ note is the most popular one.
First country to do dinosaurs get me as a citizen.
I mean, technically....
The downside is that there would be buildings on the other side of the bank notes.
Yeah that could be heavy to carry around.
Better than whatever bullshit the other option is. People on EU banknotes are just not okay since they still represent a country and also wtf is the shit on the back of those human notes supposed to even be??
stylistically, some of them are really pretty, some of them are really ugly.
as others have said, i think people are a bad idea, unless they have all kinds of local or special editions like with coins.
i think birds are kinda cool. not sure why only birds as animals, and not other animals too. i would have also liked trees or other plants, or even mushrooms. but oh well.
i don't like having people on bank notes because it is really hard to pick which ones are inportant, and you can't choose enough of them, many people will get left out. also, i don't like the idea of worshipping people.
It’s weird how they want faces now when the bridges on the current notes are specifically chosen to be fantasy bridges so they are nationally ambiguous. Also don’t see why Maria Callas deserves a spot as if she had such an important impact on European history. It’s like putting DJ Tiësto on the notes in 50 years.
The birds are the better choice.
We did our part for the birds <3
I love design D with the recording and spectrograph of the bird calls as anti-copy measures.
I like the birds, never been a fan of the faces on the bills.
Belarus had these in nineties: https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/postalovsky_a/32225144/1739419/1739419_900.jpg
Boobies, Great Tits, Bushtits, Dickcissel, Cock-of-the-rock. There are so many options!
I also hope 1 of the bird designs wins
I love how many of these designs are clearly influenced by the old Dutch Guilders bank note designs. See this for a documentary about it on YouTube.
I wish they had different animals. Like birds for the 5€ (light), bears for the 200€ (heavy), and different animals in between.
And for the back famous art paintings.
I know I'm commenting on a bird community. But I don't want all the notes to have birds & buildings.
The other design is much worse though.
There's really only 2 options: birds and select few people. Why though? What's wrong with the current notes? Can't we have more than 2 options? I hate both of them.
