- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

America. Not sure I'd call it heavenly.
Makes for an awkward few hours where dual-income parents have to figure out who is going to watch their kids after school. Drop of them off at grandma's house isn't really viable because grandma and grandpa are working too.
Its not so bad once they to middle school, when they can be left home alone for a few hours or have after-school clubs and stuff to fill the time.
Don't they also start at the dumbest time in the US? Like the first class is at 7:30 or something, so people have to get up at the ass crack of dawn to get to school in time. And then classes only run till 14:30, so the kids get home way too early. It makes zero sense.
At the high school I went to, first period started at 7:20AM, and school ended at 2:20PM. Though I was in a zero hour choir class, so that started at 6:10AM. I've seen really strange start times, though. I heard of a school in the US that started at 7:14AM for whatever fucking reason. Oh, and then there were Wednesdays which were late start days, though I think they moved those to Mondays now, based on the traffic by the schools at that time of day? Can't remember what time that started, but I'm pretty sure it was like just after 10AM, same 2:20PM end time. None of it makes sense.
It varies, my experience is with a large district with separate buildings for elementary, middle and high school.
Yes typically high school starts at 7:30, meaning we'd get picked up by the buss anywhere from 6:45-7:15 depending on how far from the school, and your luck of being first or last on the route.
Middle and elementary start, and end, later. A lot of that is due to bus logistics, you'd need a lot more busses to get everyone to school at the same time. The same busses drop off the older kids at high school, and then go pick up the younger ones.
Some places are trying to flip it it so high school kids start later, and the elementary kid starts at 7:30.
Starting high school kids later would be nice, but create new challenges for child care. Older kids are more likely to have more after school stuff, so getting out at 2 (14), spending an hour or two time at club/sport will get them home around 4 (16). If school ended at 4 (16), they'd be getting home around 6 (18). Because home work is still a thing, that would leave kids about 0 hours of family/personal time before going to bed to get the recommended 8hrs sleep. At least, getting home about 4 gives you about 2hrs a day....../s
If an elemntarty age kid got out at 2 (14), that would make it even harder on parents. With older kids getting home earlier, that can cover the little time between the young kid and parent getting home (assuming there is an older kid - the first is always complicated)
A lot of tines its easier if a parent has to go in "late" to work at 9 for a few years, than trying leave at 1:30 (13:30) to get their 5 year old off the bus. (Thats also part of why half day kindergaden is being phased out). Schools are major part of our "day care" system, whether they should be or not.

In more civilized parts of the country we have subsidized after-school care programs for those kids.
The cutoff for financial aid related to it might be a bit lower than it needs to be, at least it was 20 years ago when ma was pickin' me up from mine.

Here in Brazil we normally get 5 hours. Starts at 7am and goes to 12pm

United States and it sucked because schools have been underfunded for as long as I can remember (the late 80s), so imagine six hours of the most boring classes imaginable, the vast majority of it spent reading something off either a textbook or a whiteboard/chalkboard. The only classes that had any sort of variety in my schools were art, gym, and computer class.
Plus when you're a kid, six hours feels like an eternity.
