This was the way we used to get our diarrhea back before taco bell and bacteria laden lettuce.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 6 points 1 day ago

What? Never got diarrhea from olives, even when eating practically the whole jar by myself

[–] SharkAttak@kbin.melroy.org 3 points 1 day ago

Nah I prefer pickles. Love me some pickles.

Black olives for me thanks.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Was for me too, except I did the meme once too often and got food poisoning after eating a whole can of black olives. That was more than 30 years ago and I still can't stand the smell of them.

Unless you live next to an olive tree, they are likely green olives colored black.

Neat! Though I'd have to say that they're doing a bit more than just adding color.

[–] Botzo@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

For sure! It's also preservation technique.

It has the unfortunate side effect of making the olives somewhat tasteless compared to their possible result.

I say this as someone who finds excuses to eat olives in just about any form (including these). Anchovy stuffed being my favorite at the moment.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 2 points 13 hours ago

I despise anchovies, so I'll have to skip those. I don't like the feta cheese ones either, but I love about every other kind I've had and always have multiple kinds on hand.

I love the highschool chemistry panic over the caustic soda, and just glazing over "ferrous glucanate" added to keep the color. Ferrous glucanate sounds like iron(III) bound up ina glucose structure!? Nasty

[–] Botzo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ferrous gluconate is prescribed for anemia (ferrous sulfate is the most common in multivitamins). You could go to any number of stores close to you and find it in the supplements section.

And yeah, lye is used in many traditional food preservation and preparation techniques.

Chemistry aside, what I takeaway is that this is a wild process for a relatively tasteless product (compared to traditionally processed olives).

Agreed, I'll have my olives brined thanks.

So iron supplements are typically ferrous not ferric? I thought the body processed iron (ii) more easily because of its lower oxidation state but that was all speculation until right now. My blood clots too well if anything, I've never needed supplemental iron.

Well well well, how the turn tables.

[–] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Add some cheese, cured meat, and crackers and I'm in like Flynn.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Smh who got the jar without pimentos?

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I like the big ones with garlic cloves in 'em for snackin'

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Garlic is good too, cheddar cheese stuffed is also a nice find

[–] scops@reddthat.com 2 points 22 hours ago

Ooh, or the ones with Jalapeno slices in them. Yum

When you have an italian husband, olives are a part of your daily diet. 🤌🏻

Olives feta and tomatoes with a few dabs of hot sauce is ideal girl dinner. You might not like it, but this is what peak wasting looks like.

That's too many. 20 to 30 olives is more than sufficient.
