Ubuntu 🥀

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 80 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Regardless of opinions on Razer this is a win. The bug corps are finally paying a bit of attention

[–] dudeface@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

There has been corps like dell offering Linux distros like 10-15 years ago, it just never was an attractive option compared to windows

But windows is killing itself

[–] Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is a gaming laptop though, it's a different market

[–] sixdripb@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

why they test it with Ubuntu then

[–] captain_oni@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 hours ago

They probably heard that "Ubuntu is the windows of Linux distros" and didn't get that that's a derogatory term.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can run games on any distribution, they're basically all the same...

Although I wouldn't have picked Ubuntu, but anything else would be fine.

[–] JayGray91@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah like the example dudeface give, Dell have been offering Linux options since a decade ago in my country. Just have to go to their commerce website instead. Same with Lenovo here.

And both of them offer Ubuntu with the expected discount of a Windows license.

I assume Canonical did a lot of legwork to make big brands like that to adopt Ubuntu. IMO it is still the more well known Linux distribution that seems more suited for the non techy segment of Dell and Lenovo customers.

[–] njordomir@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I bought a Dell laptop for that reason. Turns out the spec I wanted wasn't available with Linux preinstalled, so I had to buy the Windows machine and install it myself anyway. At least I never had any real driver issues or anything else like that. Laptop lasted 10+ years running Linux practically the entire time.

Props to any OEM who supports Linux, bigger props to anyone who ships Linux preinstalled, biggest props to those who favor Linux by default and charge extra to install Windows or refuse to do it outright!

Razer could bring the biggest bump to Linux market share since the Steam Deck, or possibly even more

The current biggest weakness of Linux is lack of OEMs shipping it. Most people do not want to install an OS themselves, or even know that it's possible.

A Razer Gaming laptop with Ubuntu and an Nvidia GPU. Weirdest thing ever. Still a win for Linux.

[–] nevyn@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A laptop with no redeeming features.

[–] Guilvareux@feddit.uk 9 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That’s not true. It could have been a Windows laptop, don’t forget.

Even just using the actual price would have made the point ($7k maxed out)

[–] AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Legit, somehow the 5k-7k actual price tag is more egregious.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 1 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

You can soon buy a decent used car for the price of a new laptop. How insane is that.

[–] ohshit604@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

But hey, you save on the Windows license otherwise it would have been $16,200

[–] DonutsRMeh@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Massive win. Too bad the year of the Linux desktop happened with the explosion of RAM prices. lol

[–] Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com 59 points 1 day ago

I think it's actually a good time for year of Linux since Linux is more efficient with memory than Windows 11

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 day ago

Didn't see that coming. Razer products are just garbage and have extremely annoying drivers in windows. What could they possibly bring to the table for linux?

[–] bennypl@infosec.pub 3 points 1 day ago

Comes with a bloated battery

[–] goatinspace@feddit.org 18 points 1 day ago

5399 USD (⊙_☉)

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are razer drivers in Linux also with mandatory razer account creation, login and activation?

[–] AbKingPro@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

You can use openrazer with any frontend

[–] Tiral@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Razer laptops are the biggest POS buggy garbage. Half the track pads don't even work out of the box for 4k+

But why Ubuntu? Fedora would have made far more sense.

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 16 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Did they finally fix the build quality?

[–] chickenf622@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I've been rocking a mouse that has a broken middle mouse click from them that's only like 3 years old so no. Thankfully the 4th and 5th buttons work so I can just remap to those buttons.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 13 points 1 day ago

I remember getting shitty mice from these assholes like 15 years ago. Little has changed apparently.

[–] noobdoomguy8658@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ONLY 3 years for a broken middle mouse click from Razer?

Get a lottery ticket. My friend used to take his Razer mouse back to the store on warranty every few months for various reasons, because it did break that often, and they still let him swap for the identical one or get a refund - in the latter case, he often picked another Razer mouse, just a more expensive one, paying a little extra.

I've been rocking Logitech G102 since the beginning of 2020 (at least) and so far the only thing I had to change was the cord. Still no double clicks, no missing registers, nothing.

That said, another friend I had suggested the mouse to after years of happily using mine, kept taking them to warranty for various reasons since 2022, and I think he quit on the thing after a few attempts. Maybe they don't make them like they used to.

[–] chickenf622@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Oh it broke like a year ago lol. Probably longer covid has fucked my perception of time forever.

i didnt know they had bad support too, yikes.

Their support blamed my friend swapping the SSD with another one for the main board dying. There was nothing wrong with the SSD. He put it in another computer and it worked just fine for years.

We will never even consider buying one of their piece of shit laptops again.

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I have an older Razer Blade 13 that was a replacement for a lower end model that had battery issues. It was well within the warranty period (had it less than two months). I had been emailing their support for a couple weeks before getting tired of the wait and just tagged them on Twitter and asked for help. Had a replacement in less than 48 hours. Their actual support is trash, but the social media team seems to be the way to go when it comes to getting actual help.

EDIT: For clarification, I sent them back the bad one and hadn't heard from them for awhile.

The main thing I've heard about them is if you want support from them, you'd better be an influencer.

[–] badgermurphy@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think I get it now. "The year of Linux on the desktop" doesn't refer to a specific calendar year. Its just how long it takes them to do it.

[–] gnuplusmatt@reddthat.com 3 points 1 day ago

I'm sure its really certified if you have to run a tainted kernel, but maybe that's just me

[–] CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago

I've been happily running Linux on my 2021 Blade 14 for years. NVIDIA support is still somewhat of a problem but that's not unique to Razer. It's gotten way better over the years but some games still stutter a bit or run slower than Windows. Otherwise, it's a fine experience.

[–] weegee90@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Is this why they've been working on a web app for configuration instead of Synapse? This is a win for everybody.
