Are they saying "lap" after each lick? Or had non-speech-bubble text not been invented in 1952?

Kind of a weird artistic choice, I think. While looking into this, found a site dedicated to comic book sound effects:

Unfortunately, it doesn't list "Lap!", but looking at the date ranges, you can see that the convention without speech bubbles was clearly around by then.
