Pretty sure most professional soccer-players do high-altitude training, so i dont think this would be as impactful as one might think

[–] 2piradians@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Given every advantage, including England down to 10 players, I'm glad the crowd of ~70,000 Mexico fans went away disappointed. They were having tantrums over every little thing and booing the opposition every second of possession, so it was good to have them silenced.

How can they be high altitude when they're lower than the USA on a map? Checkmate.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Look at a globe... when you're going south you're going uphill.

[–] diabetic_porcupine@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Globes are manufactured by big round earth to push the round earth agenda. DYOR

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

Pffft... flat earth is just something pushed by the map making cartels. If the earth was flat then why is Mexico at a higher altitude? Checkmate, flat earthers.

Not to mention the team from Ecuador spent 9 hours in the air for a trip that was supposed to take 4 hours and the airline never gave a reason for the extra 5 hours of flight time, and then when they finally get to their hotel, which had been doxxed, they were greeted by "fans" blaring music outside their rooms all night long. Great hosts.

[–] Jubei_K_08@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Apparently this is a common tactic. Ecuador did it to Mexico in 1993.

"Mexico has not forgotten the 1993 Copa América in Ecuador. On the eve of the semi-final in Quito, Ecuadorian fans surrounded the Mexican team’s hotel, creating an atmosphere of intense hostility with constant noise throughout the night. On match day, the team bus was also stoned on its way to Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa.

The hostile reception on 30 June 1993, exactly 33 years ago, did not stop El Tri from defeating the hosts 2-0..."

Here's more of the Ecuadorian shenanigans if you'd like to read about it:

Man, 33 years is a long time to wait for revenge. How many of Ecuador's players were even alive then?

[–] courval@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Really?? This should be investigated and people arrested..

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

According to my dad, the cops were also there keeping them awake and running the sirens all night. As a Mexican person, this does not surprise me at all. Also just acab.

Fifa should do something about it tbh though, that's ridiculous.

I found a source about the delayed flight too, but it was paywalled and not on the Internet Archive. From what other sources I saw the delay was between 3 and 5 hours.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 53 points 4 days ago

I don't care; I heard the orange man is to give out the trophy and man it'd be great if Mexico won.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

And apparently they still lost against England playing in Mexico City.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 48 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Being at such a high altitude, the effects of gravity are less. This means that players will have a lesser risk of injury when they pretend to be injured.

My 90 year old mom has been getting into World Cup this time around. Knows absolutely nothing about soccer. Very first game she was all "why are they rolling around on the ground like that? Nobody touched them."

[–] jellyfishhunter@lemmy.world 48 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's like they're a gym leader and challengers have to come to them to face them.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Or like Kramer from Seinfeld facing and dominating kids in sparring.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 0 points 3 days ago

Fuck FIFA, fuck the World Cup, fuck Trump and fuck Seinfeld.

[–] Swemg@lemmy.world 42 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They're not the only teams living high tho, Bogotá is 2600m high for exemple

[–] galahyde@programming.dev 25 points 4 days ago (4 children)

[–] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Whoever remains conscious wins. Final match to be played in El Alto

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 days ago

I'd pay to watch that tournament

[–] JimmyMcGill@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

That’s how they won a copa America once

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 3 points 3 days ago

Sponsored by Cocaine!

[–] nullify3112@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

or Jamaica. Different kind of altitude "sickness" though.

[–] Flyswat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 4 days ago

All while denying Africans their advantage with these stupid ~~advertisements~~ hydration breaks.

[–] HenriVolney@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Their fans are not the most fair-play crowd either

[–] CoolSouthpaw@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah. It's not about them being a certain race cos I'm not racist. But those fucking Mexican fans are pieces of shit.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I'm Mexican living in Mexico and I approve this message. Soccer fans are the worst.

[–] Redvenom@retrolemmy.com 4 points 3 days ago

Mexico using all the cheat codes available

[–] Unpigged@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

In rugby that's quite a common thing in South Africa. Pole jumps in Brazil are slightly higher due to lower gravity. What's the problem here? If you are a pro footballer in 2026, and you care about your sport, you know it and condition yourself accordingly.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not to mention these guys are all in peak physical condition. It still matters, just not as much as one of us schlubs went.

[–] Unpigged@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Without preparation performing at high altitude is torturous. I've seen enough rugby drama around Ellis Park at 1700 standard/5000 freedom meters. But again, pro sport is far beyond slapstick amateur teams crashing pubs night before the game.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

I happen to personally know some professional athletes (track and field not team sports tho)

They do altitude training because performing in high altitude is so rough it gives an advantage when you're back on normal altitudes. Different theories on why it works but it does seem to.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I grew up in Boulder CO lol a lot of athletes head up there to train for any kind of running/cycling event. Like, people will train there for the Boston Marathon just cause if you can do it well up there, it'll be better wherever. It definitely makes a difference. But I don't know enough about soccer. Like do they trade people in and out like hockey or football? That'd make a big difference in how much it matters.

[–] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

At the pro level you get very few substitutions, like 3 for the entire match but maybe it’s been updated since Edit: 5, with extra in overtime and extra for a concussion

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Ahh, yeah I imagine soccer to be one of the most physically demanding sports. Running pretty much constantly for that long. I respect the hell out of the players, I just find it far too boring to watch.
