I don't care if games come as a physical medium or a digital download. I care about stuff being DRM free!

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

GOG has been so much better than optical media for well over a decade at this point. You can't easily backup your physical games. I can backup my game installers, not just GOG either but they are the most popular IIRC. But I got Factorio DRM free directly from Wube.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

you can sell a physical disc, can't sell the game installer from GOG (at least not legally)

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So I'll just give friends a copy instead. Oh that is so much worse than having to share a DVD around...

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Nooooo that’s illegal.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 month ago

Even if it’s DRM free, it completely kills the resale market. Good luck finding something for any game going forward at a discount or being able to make back any of your money off of it when you’re done playing.

And yes, we know the natural conclusion from both sides as a result of this: more people will pirate, and prices will stay high, and only one of those two groups will have the leverage of the government and police.

And that exact reason is why physical media is out for the next generation. They want to control your ability to share, lend, and re-sell

[–] SomeRandomNoob@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Does not matter if it's DRM free (except for the re-selling part)

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

I mean, maybe. But that's not really relevant because of course there will be DRM

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It probably depends on some server which is getting shut down in 5 years anyway.

[–] SomeRandomNoob@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I consider the requirement to connect to some special server also as DRM.

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As you should, but is there a way to check that prior to purchase?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

look it up online?

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 2 points 1 month ago

NGL I usually end up turning my physical media into digital stored in archives regardless.

Have you ever heard the expression "the customer is always right?"

[–] Bluegrass_Addict@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I have... but the new saying should be corporations are serial rapists and always wrong.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 1 month ago

I'm just quoting the movie lol

[–] islandcoda42@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

But we stopped serving breakfast at 11:00am

[–] yardratianSoma@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago

I mean . . . . .

PC users be like: download pirated version and burn to disk anyways?

[–] twinnie@feddit.uk 9 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Someone said elsewhere that it’s going to be 200gb, would that even fit on a disc?

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 26 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Not a single disc, but there's been many games released on multiple discs for generations. As recently as FF7 Rebirth.

[–] user_name@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I remember playing games on multiple floppies way back when! Then there was a good stretch when a single CD could hold everything, and now we’re back to multiple discs. It’s all cyclical.

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Please insert Disk 2 into A:\

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Installer crashes on disk 5 and you have to start all over again

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

5? nah. 17? yah.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

Planescape -_-

[–] lime@feddit.nu 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

riven came on 5 CDs. good times.

[–] user_name@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I totally forgot about that! Yeah, I guess there were multiple CD game, damn. And we had lost, what was it, disk 3? So my family never beat Riven specifically. What a memory from the archive that is thanks for bringing it up.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 4 points 1 month ago

Phantasmagoria was what, 7 CDs?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago

I had to install Half Life 2 from five CDs

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Bet if they had to put it on discs they'd do a better job optimizing and the game wouldn't be 200gb.

Lots of games have multiple discs.

[–] SunshineJogger@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It will still be record sales for GTA6, I bet on it.

People say they care and show outrage.... And then pay up anyway

[–] Matty_r@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago

Its basically a joke these days, the outrage cycle is like 2 weeks tops. Just ride it out and most people will forget about it and move on.

[–] girst@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago

I'm all for ownership of games/movies/etc. But what good is a disc if the game requires a day1 patch to work properly?

[–] jjj@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago

Code? I would fucking love it if games just let you download the code. (there are even some paid games which do btw)

You'll get the obfuscated compiled binary, because fuck you, that's why.

[–] BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

I don't want black Helen of Troy, I want her to be Greek.

[–] mechoman444@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago

No you don't. You have made it perfectly clear to massive corporations like valve, sony, every other developer and publisher that the extreme vast majority of people who buy games want digital download.

Then you complain when the last remnants of physical media are taken away from you.
