I don’t doubt it. I drove a school bus for three years. The companies don’t give a fuck about anything but money.

Your route is literally impossible to do because of the laws of physics? Tough shit. Routes go over an hour and a kid has to pee? Let them pee their pants. Also, we’re going to pay you minimum wage while being responsible for a heavy vehicle carrying 30+ children in rush hour traffic. These are the problems drivers face. Its why they have like 300% turnover.

I work in the technology department at a school district. Last year, they were so desperate for drivers, they actually offered staff to drive busses. I would get paid to drive a bus while still getting paid for my full time job. But fuck that. Not enough money in the world to get me to do that.

I’m a former truck driver. I went back to school and graduated during the pandemic to an industry that required people to be around eachother. I took the job to tide me over until things opened up again.

Knowing they were short qualified drivers, I was very loud about these issues. I did eventually get my route fixed, but it took 3 months! I quit when I was reprimanded and told to let kids pee their pants after stopping at a gas station to let a little girl pee.

You had a healthy immigrant population that didn’t mind taking up the jobs everyone else didn’t want. They did it, they worked hard, and they had a beer at the end of the day. Too bad they were chased out of town, slandered, kidnapped, tortured, deported to foreign states, …

Historically its been retired people.

In my area it’s retired people and immigrants. Regardless, the job is a huge responsibility and should pay as such. Safety concerns and late routes should be taken seriously.

Oh, and we hope you like getting sick all the time because kids are disgusting and the bus is a giant petri dish on wheels!

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Actually I found that I stopped getting sick. I guess being exposed to everything in small doses every day strengthened my immune system. 🤷‍♂️

My dad wasn't so lucky when he drove a school bus. He was always sick with whatever the kids brought in and said it was the worst, most boring, most miserable job he's ever done. Worse than driving a taxi for an extremely sleazy guy who later went to prison.

I actually didn’t mind the job part of the job. I thought I would hate having my cargo talk to me, but the kids were alright. It was the low pay and management’s bullshit that made it awful.

You just described the concept of vaccines.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Pretty sure everyone on this site is pro vaccine

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

What part of my comment made you think I wasn't also pro vaccine?

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

No way. Did I!?

Thanks so much smart guy!

Red mayor promises tax cuts.

Those cuts come directly from public education.

2 years later they realize they can't afford to run the schools after tax cuts.

Pushes emergency levee or threatens to cut school bussing.

Rinse repeat

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You guys are getting buses?

I was referencing that my local schools got rid of buses several rounds of austerity ago in favor of free public bus fares for students. And in a more recent round of austerity they also got rid of those. So now it's drive or get fucked I guess. Gotta teach those kids to support themselves I suppose.

Your kids' school bus

Look at this journalist, thinking anyone with kids can afford to have more than one.
