Last week I almost missed my train because of windows update.
Every day my hatred for Windows, well Microsoft as a whole really, grows. Every time I launch the almost incomprehensibly bad piece of shit that is Outlook, every time I have to restart explorer.exe because of some dumb bug that I remember from Windows 7, every time I try to mount a network share that has the same hostname as an already mounted one, every time the start bar launches Edge (not my default browser) to look something up on Bing (not my default search engine) despite my having turned that feature off, every time I have to dive into some settings to disable yet another copilot button, my desire to break into Satya Nutella's home when he's on vacation and spill old milk all over his furniture increases by a noticeable degree.
This is me. I got a new work laptop last November with a good spec and loads of ram, because I'm a "power user" ... and it absolutely drags on every little thing.
Windows Explorer falls over sometimes. Click on the start menu and wait for it to catch up. Lots if waiting for updates to complete. Don't get me started on actually running MS programs on it.
And this is the Enterprise version with the worst shit already switched off.
Meanwhile, at home I have a 12 year old Thinkpad that was decidedly mid-spec when new, with completely stock Linux Mint, which flies along (the only change from stock being an SSD, and lots of stickers). I don't even need to switch to a lighter window manager :-)
I'm an engineer and all my coworkers got laptop "upgrades" at work. They've all had similar experiences. Everything is just slower on them.
For some reason I wasn't included in the same round of upgrades, and I'm happy for it.

I bump the stupid copilot key far too often, but since it's not installed it just brings up a window going "uh.... you need to update copilot or something idk"
i had to use a w11 laptop today, it was so horrendous to navigate.
Fuck I'm glad for making the jump to 100% Linux. This is straight bullshit.
Same, switched to Linux as my main desktop OS a couple months ago. W11 is currently rotting on my secondary drive. At some point I'll get rid of it altogether
I can tell you that if you're the least bit tech savvy, you can go ahead and wipe the drive. Honeslty, having used Linux since 2000, it has come a LOOOONG way. Playing games on a Linux PC was a god damn challenge back then. Now, with driver support and with all the different launchers and Proton, it's become dead easy. I can't even tell the difference between my KDE desktop and Windows 10 in terms of what I can do and the desktop experience in general. Heck I even installed a tiled launcher menu to make it more Win-10 like. I love it!

That's what the average Gentoo user looks like after staying inside for two months installing, setting up and troubleshooting their system. Had it once, maybe a bit over 20 years ago. I respect those who love it, but it wasn't for me.
It's way way better nowadays.
Took me a bit of fiddling to actually boot, but afterwards it just works. Rock solid, I recommend it to anyone with more than 5 core CPUs.
After the AUR debacle, I'm considering it.
Compile your malware from source, like a real engineer!
I think I escaped it because I use Garuda. They have their own copy called Chaotic-Aur where they prebuild and scan stuff. Between that layer, and me being slow to update, according to the scan, I avoided it. The packages that were infected that I had installed were older copies from before the infection.
Just don't download anything stupid from AUR. Verify your getting the correct, supported packages, and you should be fine.
Try it, you start by installing it from chroot, so there's nothing to lose.

The PC Master Race has become mostly Windows users who literally have no control over their own computer except in the tiny little play areas that their actual master race overlords allow them to play in.
I become even more glad and grateful of Linux with each passing day!

I love it when they add Fucking AI to background processes on my work box. They put it in the damn spell check last time, tell me that's not logging all your input -_-

Anyone have a link to a guide on how to remove Copilot as much as you can? It keeps showing up on my computer at work and I'm so sick of it.
Installing Mint did the trick for me!
I would but it's a work computer and it's out of my hands. I've already tried running mint on one of them and about 70% of the software we use doesn't even remotely work.
You can also try using flyoobe.
It's just a script that runs scripts to remove annoyances from windows, and a lot of the things it does can be done without local admin
*don't put Mint on your work issued machine (unless they said its cool)
Someone I worked with did that and got away with it somehow. He would get an occasional nag but mostly they just let him do it. Wish I had those cajones.

I actually did put Mint on my work computer - but I have a great deal of leverage (hard to replace), and my boss likes me, and the Windows 10 to 11 uograde had failed several times, and all we we being measured on was getting off of Windows 10.
I've been running Mint for work since just before the Windows 10 end of life last year, and it has been lovely.
Ask me anything, of course.
But obviously, most folks should never do this without some kind of blessing from their employer.
These "install linux' solutions started but the more time passes the more viable they are.

Depends on when. There are config scripts to use during installation that let you pick what you want. After installation use Windows Shutup by O&O software. I can’t vouch for it being 100% effective but it appears to do the job.
I highly recommend Chris Titus' winutil. It has an option to strip out all AI in the tweaks, among other fantastic options.
