He's now ended 38 wars, and now he'll get the chance to end another. If this doesn't get him the Nobel, nothing will.

I guess Iran was serious about their demands huh?

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 39 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Interesting that it's Israel breaking it though rather than the US. If the US wants the strait open but Israel doesn't care, where does that leave them?

[–] YoureHotCupCake@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

The US provides Israel with all of their weapons, gives them billions in cash, and provides defense for them. The US can just take all of that away and Israel would crumble instantly. They have cards to play to reign in Israel but they choose not to use them.

Interesting that it's Israel breaking it

Not very surprising, though.

They already said that they didn't approve of this latest agreement.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Even when they approve things they still breach it

[–] YellowParenti@lemmy.wtf 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They've been non stop "ceasefiring" on ~~Lebanon~~ Hezbollah until Hezbollah retaliated and immediately Israel cried the terrorists are attacking! They broke the ceasefire! We are victims in all this. I believed that's when israel tried to put boots on the ground and the squad or whatever got fucked up. This shits been going for so long it all blurs together. Sorry if I got the events wrong.

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 3 points 20 hours ago

Hey even trigger fingers get tired after a few million firings.

[–] TheGoldenV@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It leaves them bent over like beggars under sacks.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

America seems pretty willing to bend over for Israel currently

[–] Rinox@feddit.it 2 points 1 day ago

Or for anyone really. Anyone in a position of strength that is. That's the art of the deal, try to bully the weak or bend over otherwise.

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

Israel is not really an independent country from the US. Israel is just an unofficial American territory.

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 62 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Israel already said they weren't recognizing the deal and they weren't leaving Lebanon, so the real question is what is Trump willing to do to about Israel to make that ceasefire stick? Historically not a lot, but that relationship does seem to be chafing a lot recently.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Trump will capitulate to his master, no worries.

[–] Fermion@feddit.nl 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Which one? He seems to have so many these days, but none of them are the American electorate.

It's the fight of the century!

Israeli Blackmail vs. Russian Kompromat!

LET'S GET READY TO CRRRRRUMBLE!

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 22 hours ago

Russia would be on the same side as Israel on this because if the Strait is closed they can sell their Oil for more money.

[–] Waterpumpee@lemmus.org 7 points 1 day ago

they have compromisig material on him

[–] Asidonhopo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Vance has already made strong and well crafted statements criticizing Israel, basically outflanking the Democrats to the left - who are still as a whole unwilling to criticize Israel in any meaningful way.

[–] Tronn4@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

$300 billion to Isreal is the answer /s

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

so the real question is what is Trump willing to do to about Israel to make that ceasefire stick?

I'm sure he'll find a way to blame Biden or Obama for this.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean yeah Israel is still occupying and ethnically cleansing Lebanon.

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago (3 children)

So sick of 'ethnically cleansing' (nothing personal), so sanitized, even genocide is usually out of context. How about we go back to 'mass murderers' and 'war criminals'?

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Except that is by definition what Israel is doing in Lebanon they are destroying the villages there and expelling the population especially the Muslim population and they are not hiding this in the slightest.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You seem to think "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide" are euphemisms compared to "mass murder", but it's the other way around.

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago

Not quite sure what 'euphemisms compared to' means here.

IMO “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” are categories of mass murder, “ethnic cleansing” being mass murder targeted to cultural background (with elements of displacement and cultural destruction making it more than just murder) , genocide to race. I would also suggest that the terms are very often misused in propagandist ways in mass media, leading to dilution and mutation of the meanings.

I merely argue that it's the murder part that is the greatest harm, and the reasons why, while relevant, are secondary. I would like to put the focus back on the murder part, whether state sanctioned or not.

I like to think that a vast majority think killing people is wrong, while once you bring politics and reasons and abstractions into it people will distract themselves at that level from the actual killing and destruction that they would prefer not to face.

I had a moment of frustration and expressed it swiftly and poorly.

[–] marxismtomorrow@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Doesn't really encapsulate what is happening. Every war the US has been a part of since WWII has objectively made every single US politician and military member a mass murderer and war criminal. Every single one. Only a few were ever a genocidier or could claim ethnic cleansing.

It's important to have that difference, especially when communicating outside of anti-imperialist bubbles, i.e. if you need to gain support for actual change amongst a populace who see members of the US military as 'heroes' or some other similar nonsense.

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Makes sense I guess, not a USian myself, thankfully, and have less need of doublespeak. Personally I just think of them all as subcategories of 'mass murderer', including 'legal' wars and especially those who instigate them, although I concede the waters can be murky there.

No doublespeak what else would you call mass expulsions of a population and destruction of the villages to make room for settlements of your ethnicity.

[–] eestileib@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Seriously y'all I think I might be developing precog abilities.

Cause this seemed like the only possible thing that could have happened.

Israel is the good guy here, they're prolonging the war so we can keep trading the TACOs on the stock market like all the other big players. The longer it goes on, the better your precog abilities get, the more money you can earn.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Good thing the markets are closed, I guess.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Each time the war "ends" and "starts" again is another chance for FIFA peace prize to end another war!!! 37.5 wars ended and counting... nobody ever ends wars like I end wars that I start that I end! Strong muscle people are saying this with many mouths!!!

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

I am flabbergasted
