"What happened?" are you for real?

Did you not read any newspaper, watch any news, or generally exist in society since 2016?

First you decided to bazooka yourselves in the foot with the Brexit vote, then went through a revolving clown show of increasingly bizarre political sideshow pieces that pretended to be PM, before finally opting to negotiate an EU exist that was about as disastrous as it could've been for your economy.

Add in the fact that the entire world has been turning to shit around you due to despotic leaders trying to rape their neighbours/the climate/populace/actual kids/everything joined by a cabal of evil billionaires who are gleefully destroying democracy and the world economy so they can go out in one final last hurrah of capitalism, and you have the audacity to ask "What happened?"?.

I seriously can't with these "I don't do politics" idiots anymore.

Living in a democracy and saying "I don't do politics" is like being a human that doesn't do water

[–] bobs_monkey@lemmy.zip 42 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I'd say a good 50% of people are not paying attention to current events/politics, then 40% who follow somewhat but don't really understand as they lack the critical thinking skills necessary to actually process the information and end up parroting the talking points of their preferred media, and then finally 10% who realize just how fucked everything is.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 32 points 1 week ago

There's a lot of people who are only just now figuring out what the rest have been seeing happen for years, decades. Many of them are still in denial about how bad things have already gotten.

It's less than 10% because some of those that are able to comprehend what's happening are the ones who made it happen and/or are rooting for it like nothing else they've ever done. This is exactly what many want, them being on a high horse as many as possible never even getting the chance of dreaming of that position.

They need to set the all time high scores list before they end the world. I'd say "/s" but honestly I think that may be what they're doing.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

*before they end the world.

You're right, changing it now

Remember, folks: if you saw someone shoplift food? No. You didn't.

[–] ddplf@szmer.info 20 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

Now imagine every tenth customer starts stealing.

Now the company has to increase prices to compensate for the loss of profits. We all start paying for the shoplifters, ridiculous, right?

But who are we really protecting by paying more, though? The shoplifters or the company? Who's REALLY the parasite here? The rich company or the person forced to steal?

EDIT because I might've not made my point clear - if we eliminate the company and replace it with public services, there would be noone to take profit and thus no need to hike the prices.

Privatization is evil. The idea of profit is parasitic.

We all start paying for the shoplifters, ridiculous, right?

A good argument for reducing inequality through higher taxes.

[–] ddplf@szmer.info 7 points 1 week ago

Exactly my point, thank you

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Dear God, think of the profits!!!

As someone who stole from the supermarket all the time in college, I just wanna say that the need is starting to foment in recent times for me. The social contract is growing cracks now that I can’t see retirement and financial stability in my late 30s.

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I consider it a public service to steal from businesses that destroy local economies, engage in union breaking and lobby against basic human rights.

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (5 children)

They’re putting armed guards at supermarkets near me right now lol.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

Yep, our kroger looks like a prison/school entrance right now. They call it Fred Meyer here and it used to be at least nice to go to. They've gone full walmart.

[–] JackFrostNCola@aussie.zone 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What value of groceries/items do you need to steal before they feel the need to use their weapons against you?

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Depends on your skin color.

you keep making bad decisions and your politicians exacerbate them

[–] Son_of_Macha@lemmy.cafe 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (5 children)

They've been doing this for the last 15 years, people steal them and sell them in pubs. Premium steaks are not feeding world hunger.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

But also the beef and cattle industry has been quietly and carefully raising the price of beef, and especially steak, ever since the pandemic and hoping no one would call them out for their blatant price gouging.

Part of this has been framed as "steak is a luxury item and so we can price it out of the reach of the poor". Pair that with government programs silently removing steak as a buyable item on food stamp and public food programs.

Meanwhile the cattle industry has been posting all time record high profits for the last 5 years.

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago

Ironic that the people whining about their tax dollars being used for poor people to buy steaks don't give a shit about all the tax dollars that go to subsidizing the beef industry.

So it’s not just us, billionaires are bleeding everyone to death, globally.

People have become so poor that the people blocking them from food have chosen to forfeit their lives.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago (8 children)

Nobody should have to pay for food ever.

I don't think people are stealing the steaks for their nutritional value, so that is still not the right framing.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I know I do but not everyone uses steaks as fleshlights.

[–] a4ng3l@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

That’s raw…

If you're going to steal food why not steal something enjoyable?

It's never bread or carrots that get a security tag. Always the luxury products...

[–] Master@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

Crime is so low they forgot what they tags are supposed to be used for!

Apparently Ben Graham, the one who tweeted this, is a Reform supporter so, obviously not a valid voice

I was going to say they could use like a pocket knife to cut it off, but then I realized where this was.

$10 bucks says they wanted to bring this topic to immigrants.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I mean it's 7.25 pounds of steak, thats a lot for a barbecue!

Do brits have barbecue, or was that eradicated after their war on flavors?
