News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

I can't get rid of it, it's obnoxious. I've tried filtering the element with my adblocker but it keeps reappearing. As much as I find Reddit useful (unfortunately), especially for information and discussion relating to my country, I will never install their proprietary garbage app on my phone just to use their website.

Oh well. I've used the Internet before Reddit existed, I'm sure I can get used to doing so again.

The technical problem (reddit UX is shit/app is shit) has various solutions. Eg:

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.quantumbadger.redreader/

The bigger problem of reddit being reddit is ... why Lemmy exists.

Let's each do our best not to turn Lemmy into Reddit.

[–] EpicFailGuy@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

took you long enough XD, IDK of anyone has already told you but there's a tool to migrate all your subreddits to similar communities, and a script to overwrite all your comments for privacy's sake.

There's also a great community finder tool you should check out, on this side any lemmy instance can sub to any community on any other lemmy instance so you may want to subscrive to several communities with the same theme in more than one instance.

This is one of them

https://lemmyverse.net/communities

This is another: https://sub.rehab/

[–] Virtvirt588@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Thats actually so useful. Such community finder tools should be more widely known, as I think this aspect can be one of the more challenging things on fedi.

I’m a former redditor as well, a few years back. Lemmy is a very nice place. It’s like Reddit back before Reddit went to shit (~15 years ago).

This year, we’ve had a big influx from Reddit. This is great that people are finally abandoning ship.

I’m pleading with you that are new here…please don’t bring the nastiness here. Start afresh!

I say that because I’ve noticed a sharp increase of shitty attitudes all of the sudden. It’s a direct correlation with the new influx of redditors. I had someone, just two days ago, accuse me of acting like an r/atheist whatever-the-fuck. He was trying to insult me because I disagreed with his view on something.

It doesn’t matter if we agree or disagree…respect and latitude is what makes Lemmy a great place. Let’s not turn this platform into Reddit 2.0 ❤️

[–] Today@lemmy.world 7 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

When i first came to lemmy i was defensive and grouchy. Took a bit to recognize how different it is here.

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Keep a hopeful heart, but use the block function liberally.

It's one of the things few people know exists, and it will make your life much more sane. In fact, people have been here for several years know that there's a small cadre of toxic users, and once you accidentally catch them in your block net, things calm down here for you.

Don't block people out of anger, just ask yourself if this person is the type of individual who's going to contribute to my life in any way? If they anger you are frustrate you, just block them. We don't know each other, or we're all just faceless humans here.

Welcome ❤️

Reddit has IP shadowbanned me for some reason. All new posts on my main account are invisible, and new accounts are the same. I’ve appealed, multiple times, to no response.

And not “some reason” being “I made edgy political posts they’d obviously dislike.” No, I did two things on Reddit:

  • Nerd out about lore on /r/thelastairbender and some other fandom subs

  • Nerd out about ML in /r/localllama, before the tech bros came for it.

Doesn’t seem like anything to ban me over.

…Funny thing is, it seems like I’m not alone?

I noticed many experts missing in /r/localllama. Honestly it feels like all the technical knowledge has been sucked out of the sub, and people there don’t even know the basics of how stuff works.

Same with my preferred fandoms. They’ve gotten more “culty,” less knowledgeable, less interested in deep lore and speculative theory/stories.

[–] SuspiciousCarrot78@aussie.zone 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

On the r/LocalLLama - there's a Lemmy equivalent. It's quiet but if you start a good topic people will come out of the wood work.

I'm thinking of starting one about my new project (replacing llm with deterministic code + Markov chain for garnish. Not quite an expert system of old but towards that end; DM me if you want and I will send you link to repo).

Anyway - fuck reddit and its performative nonsense, slop and bots. I will never share technical knowledge there again.

Hopefully the friction of using Lemmy keeps the worst of reddit on reddit.

That's exactly what drove me over here a few days ago. After they locked the API up and boost stopped working I was just browsing the website occasionally. Lemmy is cool so far, just running into a worrying amount of pro-Russian propaganda mental gymnastics. And of course not as many speciality subs yet. I wanna chat about project cars but the largest car community here are those fuckcars loons. Not fun people to be around.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 19 points 15 hours ago

Like the other person said, your Lemmy experience will be a lot better once you block the tankie instances, but I hear you regarding the lack of niche communities. I want to talk about cars too, but unfortunately the "fuck cars" crowd far outnumbers us and they are everywhere on Lemmy. I can't help that I enjoy driving; chill out, people!

[–] Tempus_Fugit@lemmy.world 34 points 17 hours ago (3 children)

Just block a large chunk of .ml and .hexbear stuff and you'll see 95% less commies.

[–] Astrealix@lemmy.world 32 points 16 hours ago

commies aren't even the issue it's the tankies. definitely a lot more leftist presence on lemmy than average (though that's true for the internet as well I feel) but most of them aren't just whiplashing straight over to bootlicking the anti-western dictators instead.

[–] Sibshops@lemmy.myserv.one 19 points 15 hours ago

Commies are fine, the pro-military tankies are the issue.

[–] RIotingPacifist@lemmy.world 17 points 15 hours ago

Commie here, please don't confuse Tankies who are basically just nationalists for non-US aligned countries with me.

[–] AoxoMoxoA@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Start a community...what kind of cars you into?

Reddit was the bomb if I had an issue with a car and I needed to chat with 50 people that already solved the same issue on a model specific sub. Can't do that here

[–] Watermark710@piefed.social 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Once you build up a decent block list, this place gets much better. I just wish there was more activity. It sucks to see a thing I'd like to discuss, and seeing 0 comments on the post.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 2 points 12 hours ago

Did your block list catch the baby with the bathwater?

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Have you gone to Car Enthusiasts already? https://lemmy.world/c/cars

(I'm not a car person, so I don't have any other recommendations. I just remember seeing posts from that community.)

[–] iconic_admin@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Dude, that use our garbage app to continue pop up -is- fucking obnoxious. Fuck Reddit.

[–] teslekova@sh.itjust.works 10 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Welcome.

Isn't it amazing how Reddit was this beautiful community, genuinely useful and welcoming to millions, and now it's being thrown away, soiled, emptied out, on the pathetic whims of some selfish billionaire owner?

[–] tea@lemmy.today 2 points 7 hours ago

It's just how capitalism do. Enjoy free VC services while they last, but do not get attached to them. They will, invariably, enshittify.

Private companies with good leadership can last for a bit but eventually slide as well. Companies do not have moral stances and only will hold moral policies as long as they have moral leadership or they fear user backlash. Money and profits are too great an incentive.

Reddit was big enough that it wasn't worried about user backlash. I'm enjoying Steam for now, but there will come a day that it will too become a pariah, mark my words.

[–] Danitos@reddthat.com 15 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (3 children)

You can use the old version by changing the URL to use old.reddit.com instead of www.reddit.com. It removes the banner.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 10 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Shhhh. That's like telling someone who just quit smoking, "Look, there's a barely-smoked cigarette in that ashtray!"

[–] slaacaa@lemmy.world 1 points 41 minutes ago

More like vaping, as it removes some of the harm (adslop and horrible UI), but keeps other parts that are still bad for you (current reddit itself)

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 1 points 11 hours ago

The settings also let you choose that www.reddit.com defaults to old instead of sh (the new design). It's a per-device setting though.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

I got shadow banned on Reddit for posting my diy Luigi prayer candle idea on a few different pages. I’m not allowed to post comments on facebook because of my anti Israel , anti billionaire and anti pedophile belief’s.

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 4 points 11 hours ago

Settings -> Preferences -> Default to old Reddit -> turn it on

It's a per-device setting, so this needs to be done on the phone. But there's no such message anymore if you do that.

[–] Hackbraten@lemmy.zip 4 points 11 hours ago

Maybe its time to say godbye to Reddit.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 20 points 17 hours ago

This whole shitstorm started three years ago. Welcome!

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

Use browser, Firefox and ublock origin, then the old reddit plugin.

[–] PiraHxCx@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 16 hours ago

I had an acc with generic name and no picture that sometimes I'd use to ask stuff on big communities when needed, but some time ago I tried to open it to check if I had replies on a thread and they wanted to do the age verification shit, so now I don't use Reddit at all, RIP New_Spring471

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago (3 children)

As much as I hate GPTs and Reddit I've found that using most of the Search GPTs out there are a better source for getting answers from Reddit. The neat thing is all the AI companies have literally downloaded all of Reddit and now there is practically no need to ever visit Reddit anymore.

[–] Watermark710@piefed.social 6 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

I honestly hate AI so much. I had a question about a game I was playing (basically, "Where do I find [item] in [game]?"), and the AI led me on a wild goose chase for 2 entire days before I was finally able to talk to a human about it and get the right answer. The AI had me searching in the entirely wrong layer of the game.

[–] Bohne93@feddit.org 2 points 2 hours ago

Exactly the same thing happened to me when i was stuck in Outer Wilds. Blood boiling how it gaslights you.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Sometimes the AI will completely fail to recognize the real question. Like if a particular mechanic isn't working right, it will spit out the way it's supposed to work.

Like, "Yeah, I know, and the game's not functioning that way. Which is why I need help. Fucking moron AI, I thought I turned you off in search options, why are you talking to me again?"

[–] SparroHawc@piefed.world 1 points 13 hours ago (4 children)

The problem is that there is SO much content similar to that on the internet, and often only one or two instances of the correct answer - so if the most-common next word according to its training data happens to not fit the correct answer, it throws off the whole answer.

You don't need AI to search. Try Qwant or Kagi
