Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

I took some liberties with the translation to try to make it sound more natural. Google is translating it as "Jucika and the first sunbathing" or "and the first sunbath", but both sound weird to me.

As always, stay tuned here on !comicstrips@lemmy.world for a slow trickle out of Jucika comics, but if you want to find more, here’s a good post with a large collection that /u/JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social posted last year: https://piefed.social/post/1258520

Literally its "Jucika and the first sunbathing" but i think its okay to take that little liberty in translating it as how you did.

One odd thing here is the sun is moving right to left, as though she were in the southern hemisphere.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Isn't it a south-american comic?

I also yearn to catch some sun when I'm stuck working.

as always, im totally at a loss as to what im looking at. this comic artist really puzzles me

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Woman on typewriter moves to stay in sun as it moves across the sky?

OP comic w/red lines around visible sunlight

Man in very bottom right surprised to see such a scene, but she needs that sun.

the visual style of the art just throws me off i guess. like, i assumed that was what was meant to be intended, but the third panel really gave me visual perspective trouble for some reason. which is often the case with Jucika :3

I think you did well.
There's a niche community ("scanlation") adjacent to mine which involves scanning and translating graphic novels, in which it's almost a nonstop process of making these types of decisions. But even amongst professionals, it's kind of amazing how often they'll make very mediocre of awkward translations.

OTOH, if you've ever read some of the Asterix books in English, that's an example of the absolute cream of the crop of translation, which does an amazing job even preserving tricky puns and cultural references across languages.

Btw, I have a folder pretty-well stocked with high-quality Jucika fan art, and I was thinking of dripping such content here, except that I spotted rule #2, 'comics should be a full story.' Unfortunately, most of the fan-art ones are single panel. :S

β€˜comics should be a full story.’ Unfortunately, most of the fan-art ones are single panel. :S

i think if a single panel can tell a whole story, that should be fine.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 1 points 19 hours ago

Most of them can't, but you can judge that for yourself. (link above)

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well that's pretty cool. I'm glad that there are people out there willing to do that.

Hmm, I think people would be interested in seeing fan art, but you're right, I don't know where you should put it. If you do post it somewhere and let me know, I'll add a link to it on my posts here.

Okay, I've rounded up a collection of the 'art-style' fanart, which is scheduled to go out later this morning. It can be accessed and linked to immediately, however:

https://piefed.social/c/eurographicnovels/p/2128207/the-best-of-jucika-fan-art-12-pieces-with-two-videos

At some point I'll follow up with some 'strip-style' fanart. There's another dozen of those...

Perfect! I'll add this link to future posts.

Have you tried DeepL for translations? I find it to be much better than Google translate for getting the context right, at least for European languages. Although, if you use a camera to scan and translate, I do not know if DeepL has such a feature since I have never used it.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago

OP knows about DeepL of course, but the free version doesn't handle image translations AFAIK. If it did, I'd be using it all the time.

At my comics community, I usually just translate by hand, however, sometimes it makes sense to do auto-translate by whole images: https://piefed.social/c/eurographicnovels/p/1577350/google-translate-has-upped-its-game
