I’m so used to seeing my fellow Americans being unforgivable pieces of shit, that it’s a little weird seeing an Irish person being so horrible

[–] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s almost as if all people have the capacity to be shitty regardless of the arbitrary location of their birth. Weird.

[–] homes@piefed.world 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I guess, as an American, I’m so mired in my own toilet bowl of horror that I forget shitty people exist elsewhere

And Ireland seems like such a lovely place…

[–] suxen_tsihcrana@anarchist.nexus 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It is, for the most part. Doesn't mean it hasn't its share of issues.

[–] homes@piefed.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Yeah, well, I’m sorry to be reminded that this entire world is pretty shitty

Even lovely Ireland

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Ah no, Ireland is pretty great, don't worry. There's just the occasional scumbag politician just like everywhere. This is one. Pretty cringe watching that.

I mean I'm biased but well travelled.

Should probably be seized and used to pay for the defense of Ukraine.

[–] chocrates@piefed.world 6 points 2 months ago

There is a legitimate discussion to be had, about how sanctions or seizure would effect working Irish people. But russia needs to be hit wherever they are, for there actions in Ukraine.

We should probably also be talking about sanctioning the US as well, even though that's gonna fuck me somehow.

The way the captions are done, I won't watch it. What is this facebook?

Are you ok with one word at a time captions? Does this not bother anyone else. I don't care what you are saying, if you use these captions you are dead to me.

Greetings from Ireland. Two things to note here:

  1. Sincere apologies about our asshole politicians, and the people who elect them. Really. Unfortunately this politician is not a one-off.
  2. The interviewer is not a journalist and not Irish. He takes Irish Times articles and regurgitates them as if it's his own work. He works making videos for the British far-right.
[–] himezero@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Except for the part where he is Irish and a journalist. Makes me doubt your Irish claim. He had worked with the far right in Britain but no longer does. In fact he works to expose far right disinformation now along with reporting from the front lines in Ukraine.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

He was born here, I'll give you that. But he moved away and is a dual citizen now. Yes, he's an Irish citizen but seen as a "soup taker" here by some.

He's not a journalist. He repeats other people's work and presents it as his own. He is a campaigner.

I don't understand Ukranian but am told by someone I trust that there are some easily found posts on Ukranian Facebook of him causing significant issues for some Ukrainian journalists.

[–] himezero@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So why say he’s not Irish? Especially now if he’s challenging Irish leadership on aiding Russia in their war.

If someone goes out and asked someone a question then disseminates the information then they’re a journalist. What he does is more akin to activism not campaigning. And if you’ve seen any of his recent content it’s definitely not regurgitating other people’s work. Unless you’re talking about regurgitating the daily lives of Ukrainian citizens and the dangers they face daily.

Ahh yes the two most trustworthy sources, someone that someone else trusts and Facebook.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm glad he's challenging Irish leadership. My point to viewers is, don't assume we can trust him based on one video.

He's Irish born, but defected to the British far-right - a group which has long hated the Irish, our struggle for independence and pretty much everything we stand for. You can still call him an Irish citizen, I concede that point.

Dissemination is dissemination, not journalism. Journalism is a discipline comprised of many skills. In the age of disinformation, we do need to distinguish between those two.

[–] himezero@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s not just one video. You clearly haven’t seen any of his recent work. Maybe looking into his unfavorable views and coverage of Orban and Putin could help. And the part where he has talked about his disillusionment with the far right plus advocating against misleading extremist content designed to radicalize people.

I don’t think he holds those views, maybe he did at one point. But he’s allowed to change his opinions and hold new beliefs. And I’m definitely not ignorant to the struggles of Irish independence and identity.

I guess I’ll have to find a dictionary to give you an actual definition. How is what I described not similar to “writing characterized by a direct presentation of facts or descriptions of events without an attempt at interpretation.” Or “writing to appeal to current popular taste or public interest.” With the second definition even something so stupid as “The Sun” tabloid crap is journalism. I used the term dissemination because the medium of journalism doesn’t matter, more the fact that it is designed to reach an audience. Even regurgitating pretty much the same thing as someone else is journalism. So it’s a much better argument from you to describe it as lazy or effortless journalism. I’d also implore you to watch his coverage of Kherson, where he was at risk of Russians attacking him with drones. Interviewing locals who still live there and soldiers working to keep their citizens safe.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

He has betrayed many people to get to where he is, as I’ve said already.

he’s allowed to change his opinions and hold new beliefs

I would not deny Ukraine any support. But let’s hope he does not change his mind again, as the Machiavellian types are known to do.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I try to emphasize with all people but WTF is this guy saying? Like, is he literally being paid by the Russians buying this aluminum?

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] Mokopa@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He's a local politician, there's no way he'll advocate a response that might end in large numbers of local jobs (proportional to the area) being put on the line.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah, he is also a spineless twat

I dont know of a mechanism that exists, there is similar at an EU level. I think France seized a port temporarily to prevent foreign ownership.

I want it seized. We are sluts here, we deserve nothing.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There are russian interests behind him by the sounds of it.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 months ago

which is fine but can't sell Alu to Russia should be the rule and possibly the Russian owner should be sanctioned by the sounds of it.

I'd feel pretty shitty as an employee working fir a company that supplies stuff used to kill Ukrainian. I'd struggle to live with myself

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

This is embarrassing for us in Ireland. And yeah, unfortunately the job angle is a dilemma. It's the same reason that weapons manufacturers are hard to take down because they are jobs providers to peripheral regions of a country, such as the American desert states and Scotland in UK, despite their products being used to kill and maim the innocent. This is why we can't have nice things in a capitalist system.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Weird place to put the Russian flag but ok

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Local politician remains committed to local issues despite baiting by far-right blogger.

[–] himezero@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He hasn’t been far right for several years now.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk -2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

No such thing as an ex-neo-nazi.

[–] himezero@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

People most definitely can change their mind and opinions. Especially if they become disillusioned with the ideology. Now he fights disinformation and exposes the lies of the far right.

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Lol, of course there is.
