Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)
Posts that link to the following sources will be removed
- on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons), archive:is,ph,today (their JS DDoS websites)

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com
(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)
Ban lengths, etc.
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)
I took it one step further and try my darndest to choose local products where possible, and if not, smaller EU businesses. Unilever, mondeles, nestlΓ©, etc are companies I now try to actively avoid. Because once we loose the small actors we no longer have any choice left at all. Unfortunately the end game for unregulated markets always end up with monopoles. I know our EU market is regulated, but the enforcement against the actors invested in anti-compeditive behaviours are pretty toothless in my opinion.
Must say the local/small alternatives are actually in most cases better. Ritter Sport chocolate is in my opinion more tasty than marabou and better size. The local ice cream producers also have more interesting options, and Arvid Nordquist coffee taste better. What I am trying to say is that I'm not missing out quite the opposite.
Same, but it's hard. I do like the variety that comes with small local businesses so it's a win in my book. As long as i can afford it that is
This is a shift Europeans are having to make reluctantly
Yes it was reluctantly at first, but I don't think it is so much anymore.
EU has shown to be better at handling a crisis situation than we ourselves expected, and unity in EU and Europe on the issue, has resulted in way less reluctance as programs are decided upon in unity, like the EU SAFE program that for instance Canada and Japan have joined.
The strong cooperation in EU and Europe in many areas has shown us that we can act with decisiveness in unity when it counts. And when pressured from outside, the EU countries can stand together.
More than at any previous time, European policymakers are having a crisis of faith in the American system itself
Abso-fucking-lutely!
The problem is not just Trump, it's the American population and the Republicans and the American dysfunctional democracy.
The two Franco-British-led coalitions of the willing, formed to organize European action in the Ukrainian and Gulf theaters, are cases in point.
Exactly, the success of the European determination to help Ukraine without USA is amazing. π π
As usual, I like the understated tone and visibility of European long term policy. No big announcement, no statement, just small decisions that change the landscape over time. Once you see the full picture, everything is already in place.
Makes sense. You can't win by announcing anything because Trumps ego is too easily bruised, any deal you do make with him can be null and void a week later and if, at some point, there are adults in the room again, you will be in a better negotiating position.
Hey, speak for yourself I ain't quiet about it!!!
I'm both quiet and loud about it
I was pleasantly surprised to learn recently that a bunch of my friends have also removed most american products from their lives. one friend just buys whatever suits his needs, and moves on. but most of the rest of us in that group have made a conscious choice to not buy american products and/or choose Canadian products instead, without it impacting our lives in any noticeable negative way (cost, availability, quality, etc)
I think the largest impact this has had on me is that the closest grocery store to me has a shitty selection of pickles, it's still half Bick's and I'd rather not have pickles than buy american pickles
Lemmy commentor SLAMS journalists for writing ever shittier headlines
Lemmy commentators TAKE DOWN a random Twitter account
Clickbaity headlines ANNIHILATE Lemmy commentator 's last brain cell
How do you quiet quit a country that you don't live in? I'm not planning to travel to the United States anytime soon but I'm worried that they will not understand that I'm boycotting them and will think I'm simply not going.
Do I need to write a letter or something?
That's what quiet quitting is. You quit without making a big deal out of it.
Canada hasn't been quiet about avoiding american brands. Like, entire sections of empty shelves in liquor stores that used to carry american brands and the like. But you can totally do that quietly, if you prefer the quiet approach.
I don't think there is anything quiet about it. This has been a long time coming and frankly as an American I don't know why it was not done sooner.
Everyone is maneuvering away from the US and Americans are going to find themselves very alone in the world one day, their only partners being those who are also without allies or friends, just like Donald Trump's personal life. America, rebuilt in the image on DJT.
Almost too quietly.
I was going to say, not so quietly. Everyone everywhere is walking back from the US. The relationship is, at best, a salvage operation.
I agree it hasn't been entirely quiet, the Greenland affair definitely wasn't quiet, with many countries stating publicly that they supported Greenland, some of them even sending troops.
Also the Iran war has been criticized by many European leaders as illegal, and USA has at best limited access to airbases controlled by European countries.
Also on trade, when Trump threatened to increase tariffs on EU again, the response from EU was swift, that in that case EU might resort to the Bazooka, a political "weapon" designed to be used against China id necessary, but that could be used against USA too.
It has been so clear that Europeans have lost patience with Trump, that Trump has literally raged against it at times.
Feeling this at my company.
The amount of time I have spent working with European customers has dropped a lot. They are doing whatever they can to buy European instead.
Crazy compared to how freely things worked out years ago. Early 2000s I worked at a company basically doing stuff with all sorts of folks from USA to Europe to Russia to China.
Gods, I wish this was the case here in Sweden. Our nazi government is happy to bring us closer.
Theres been nothing quiet about it
Quiet quitting? I donβt think this is the right term at all. IMO Europeans, and tourists from any other country for that matter, have made it quite clear that there are a lot fewer of them that want to visit the US or buy products associated with the US. I donβt think theyβre being quiet about it at all.
Just gonna leave this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU
One of the few reasons I still use Reddit.
Better invite them here, what's the point of switching from US stuff by doing it on US platform despite having alternative?
