That's one of things that bothers me about how AI is being pushed in the workplace. Assuming AI actually does manage to help me get my work done faster, it's not like I get to home earlier or work less days. I'm just going to get more work piled on me.

It has always been like that. We invent machines to help us be more productive. Not to work less, but to produce more. Or the same, but with less people. And every time people protest because they are losing their jobs. Time passes, new types of jobs pop up. Rinse and repeat.
That being said. I'm not particularly on board with A.I. Sure, it can do some really impressive things, but at the same time I think it's been hyped way above its limits, and I'm not a fan of its environmental footprint. I just don't think the result is worth price. But I guess only time will tell.
and a pizza party for compensation
I mean, if you ain't drowning in it, are you really working? And if you are, you should get off your ass and work harder so we can drop more work on you!
I will never forget that company I used to work for before I moved which was like: "Yeah we need you to bring in 12500€/month so you finance your own salary + bring in 100% in profit, we literally don't care how long it takes lol". I had months where I worked one week, hit that line and then had the rest of the month as vacation lmao.
I'd love if they had reasonable targets that being efficient made you have feee time.
When I asked my boss how do I manage 40 hours if I finish some tasks faster than others, they were like "just let me know what that happens, I need to give you more work" lol
This is part of why scumbags want to kill work from home.
I can finish a task in an hour and fuck off. Harder to do in an office.
They could also not be fucking counter productive management, and I'd keep working on stuff. But they'd rather have a bunch of pRoCeSs and nonsense.
When I was in the office I would browse the internet or wander around to waste time when I'd completed my tasks and wanted to avoid having more dumped on me. Now I clean the house or meal prep or play with my cat.
I'm still reachable by slack for emergencies. If anything I'm MORE available because people don't have to wander around the building to find me if something explodes.
This is true but you have to remember that management is stupid. Stupid and cruel, but mostly stupid.
Never tell them how long it’s really going to take. How else will you look like a miracle worker?
Under promise and over deliver is still king.
"I cannot guarantee something won't go sideways. I need at least 3 weekends of overtime available to be certain before it's released."
Deliver it 10 days later. Or 12, after relaxing for a day or two.
Your timeframe stands. New project? Do it again. Give yourself ~100-150% extra room.
Star Trek Engineers in a nutshell
Always multiply your estimates by a factor of four.
Then find the bottle of green stuff.
Then find the bottle of green stuff.
I don't know what workplace you're at, but mine isn't fancy enough for absinthe.
What i was picturing lol

That shit looks soo good! 😋🤤
That's more addictive than Aldebaran whiskey! And way more expensive too!

Are you nuts? Do you know how much a pizza party costs? You little ungrateful shits, we’re gonna buy even more yachts now
weren't you just gonna buy more yachts anyways, though?
Gee, aren't yachts amazingly flammable for being watercraft, though?
Making it is one. Then there is paperwork, all the changes never mentioned and sitting in meetings. Now the time needed it's times four. It's legit.
Remember, never work any harder or faster than you're getting paid for.
And never turn in your work product until it’s due. Work done early means more work.
Unless you have a way to leave as soon as the work is finished. Which we all should be given that.
Also, personality is often more important than how hard you work.
I could work faster and get my shit done but why would I want to have my bosses give me more shit to do.
I already have two people's work to do by myself, I'm not going to move faster than a shuffle for what they pay me.
I generally dislike working at a shuffle. My work day is over much faster if I'm in a bit of a rush throughout. I don't see it as me getting paid for a certain amount of work. I see it as me selling my time. Between 08:00 and 16:00, what I do during that time is up to my boss. I don't own that time, in exchange I get my pay.
I live in a country with actual workers rights though. Might make a difference.
I move fast, it is more of a methodical shuffle. I take my time to make sure I check take the right product since there are lots of letters and numbers similar in the products. I shuffle through the multipage orders because they don't sort orders by location so I have to go back and forth on the pages instead of going back and forth in the warehouse.
I'm in the fortunate position where boss people are impressed by how much work I do to help the others struggling with having bad bosses.
It pays well but plateaus as you start running out of bosses to defeat. Then you get in this awkward situation where everyone a tier below the c-suite wants you, but don't understand that you aren't up for sale in their game.
Been in NFP for a decade and people are still the same. But in NFP you get the leftovers that were never smart enough to be touched for a corporate role. Their idiocy cascades down to a workforce of 15,000 people that have to endure it; people that signed up to help others.
So, that's my job. Fuck the money—40% of my paycheck is donated—and my time is spent being real good at helping others by showing up the overpaid morons that make life hard. And surfing. And trains. And birdwatching and trees.
I'm intoxicated an am oversharing. o7
Fuck bosses. They're so useless, weak, and easy to defeat. All you gotta do is break their "network" with logic, and if that fails, a unionised force.
I somehow started rambling again...
I only understood "unionised force" and I gotta say "based".
I read it as un-ionised and didn't make a lot of sense.
There is something to be said for unionising on a micro level. A team of 3 or 4 can make much more ground than organising 1000 workers. Always look for that opportunity by getting deep and essential. Never let them know it's coming and always have an idiot boss to deflect to so they canabalise each other.
Done well, you get deeper by "saving the day" or whatever.
Only do enough work to avoid getting fired.
Identify the ones who match your salary level, then observe how little work they can get away with. Then set your engagement level a few steps above that. That’s the sweet spot. If they get fired, adjust accordingly.
Ah, so it’s like driving. As long as that guy over there is faster than me I’m good.
Beginning to think my productivity is simply being captured by my boss and turned into profit for my company's investors.
Took me 20 years to realise getting things done quicker than others doesn't bring you shit if you get paid per hour. You have to stay your 8 hours. You'll just always be the work donkey and the lazy ass flirting with the boss will get promoted.
