One is my name. The other is not.

Just to be clear, it's Commander Data, not Commander Data.

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 2 points 3 days ago

I assume the king took this photo? Or maybe the king’s jester if the king approved of it before the photo was released

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 10 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Either way is fine but just don't come at me with "the data are conclusive"

[–] Gumus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

In some languages the word "data" is always plural. It feels natural to say it like that in english, too.

[–] violentfart@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

You can tell someone is older or in academics/research when they say it like this.

For most people “data” is a singular set. It’s clearer to say “these sets of data are conclusive”, while if it’s a single study, “this data is conclusive”

Like why you don’t walk into a police station and say “there were murders everywhere” when you’re talking about crows.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 days ago

This datum is conclusive!

I was looking for a NES game on GoG.

There is a right way to say that sentence. And a wrong way.

[–] notabot@piefed.social 8 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Which one do you hate more?

  • I was looking for a en ee ess game on gog.

  • I was looking for a ness game on gee oh gee.

There are at least 2 more ways to say it, along with some even more cursed variants.

Say gog like the G in gif?

[–] just2look@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Could be gog, jog, goj, or joj.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 days ago

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain a G at the end of a word is always pronounced as a hard G. So the latter two are out.

Jog is hilarious though, Imma start saying it that way

Zjog, zjoj, etc

[–] Jiggle_Physics@quokk.au 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

long E for nes, like neice.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 3 points 5 days ago

Lol pure evil

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I hate them both equally, I'd say "an NES game"

[–] zitrone@europe.pub 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

/aɪ wəz ˈlʊkɪŋ fɔː ə ɛn eː ɛs ˈɡeɪ̯m on gŏg/

tbh /gŏg/ is pretty hard to pronounce so i would probably say /ɡɒk/ like gock

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago

This is the kind of lore im looking for

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 7 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I was looking for a Nintendo Entertainment System game on Good Old Games.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Not anymore, technically:

GOG.com (formerly Good Old Games)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOG.com

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 4 points 5 days ago

You understand

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

You say data, I say data

You say gif, I say gif

Data, data, gif, gif

Let's call the whole thing off

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago
[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)
[–] AyuTsukasa@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Then there's me who says it both ways depending on the sentence.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

It's his name, I pronounce it how he does.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

As long as it’s fucking singular because the other way sounds stupid …

[–] Ronflow@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Data in portuguese is normally spoken as Data, and means calendar date, while Data means the lay down command

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 2 points 5 days ago

I call it both, depending on the mood

[–] cravl@slrpnk.net 3 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Might I suggest a compromise wherein everyone is equally wrong:

dah-tah

God forbid vowels have a consistent pronunciation throughout a word

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 2 points 5 days ago

Auzzies just chucking in 20 "R's"

Jes, kaj mi supozas, ke tiu chi parto de la fadeno estas nun proprajho de la Universala Esperanto-Asocio.

[–] fleebleneeble@reddthat.com 1 points 5 days ago
[–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I call it data. Sue me

[–] tobebannedbygaymods@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago
[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 days ago
[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Data is just a non-starter. Data makes you later!

[–] Jiggle_Physics@quokk.au 1 points 5 days ago

everyone toe-may-toe, toe-maw-toe, to indicate both are fine. As soon as I say taw-muh-toe however, there is an issue.
