They may not have the gavels yet, but House Democrats are laying the groundwork for a number of investigations into Donald Trump should they win control of Congress in November.

Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif. — who’s set to chair the House Oversight Committee in a Democratic majority — told MS NOW that his team is “already preparing and gearing up.”

“We’ve got a team on Epstein, we have a team on [Trump] family corruption, we have a team on DHS and ICE,” Garcia said. “Those teams are actively working on preparation, letters, research.”

investigations

Maybe we should go ahead and treat Trump the way he's treated the American citizenry? Particularly immigrant or marginalized groups? Tell me again why an investigation is necessary?

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 0 points 1 hour ago

Maybe a dozen of them. No one else.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 8 points 6 hours ago

Much questioning takes place. Much time is wasted. Many strong statements issued. Democrats fail to make real change or prevent the situation from worsening.

Nothing happens.

What Democrats could do is fundraise to change an ICE detention facility into a Trump Hotel, a high security jail to put Trump while we have the probable cause of some conviction, deny him bail like he has countless immigrants and have him investigated and tried for his crimes. As a luxury we can serve sparkling Dilley concentration camp water too.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 46 minutes ago* (last edited 45 minutes ago)

We've got that, it's called Guantanamo Bay. That's where all the MAGA All-Stars should be.

[–] themaninblack@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

This should take the form of a continuous, publicly accessible investigation that only continues rather than is summarised when they retake the House.

But it isn’t and won’t be.

It will be a well put, tightly and succinctly presented, work of art of an argument for an additional impeachment and unrealised conviction in the Senate. Just like the Jan 6 Committee.

They should instead be throwing themselves into the gears of govt., but they will take the long term, conventionally optimal strategy of letting the Republicans make their mistakes.

America is so, so frustrating in the face of obvious corruption and incipient fascism.

[–] b161@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 10 hours ago

Just wait for the Mueller report guys. Trust me. Justice takes time.

[–] nosuchanon@lemmy.world 12 points 13 hours ago

They had nearly a decade to do ANYTHING about Trump, the Epstein files, etc. nothing is going to functionally change because these people are complicit. Enough of them on both sides are also compromised and implicated or simply bribed.

The same song and dance they’ve been putting on for decades. “Oh we can’t do anything unless we control the house and the Senate! Just wait till we’re in charge! We’re gonna fix everything” And then comes the infighting, lack policy, and eventual capitulating to corporate interests.

What makes you think they’re gonna do anything about any of the shit now?

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, I'd really like to hear what the plan is to un-fuck everything if they retake Congress. And Jesus tittyfucking Christ, stop focusing only on Trump. There's a whole horde of gouls pulling the strings behind him, and they need to be stopped. Trump is just a pedophile figurehead.

[–] nosuchanon@lemmy.world -5 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

There is no plan ,there never has been, they’re not gonna fix shit.

[–] Wataba@sh.itjust.works 3 points 12 hours ago

Just like anarchists then.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 11 hours ago

Oh, yah. I just envision Jeffries and Schumer going all out prosecuting Trump and the Republicans. Yup, it'll definitely happen, like right away, about 10 minutes after hell freezes over.

[–] underThunder@thelemmy.club 8 points 15 hours ago

When am I going to start hearing democrats talk about what they're going to do to fix the country when they regain power? Or is the whole plan just "Trump is bad"?

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Does anyone have that "well that just happened" blog meme? I can't find it lol

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 17 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Trump investigations? That's it?

How bout a fucking tribunal for Hegseth?

How about establishing a Robinhood reimbursement committee.

Start there.

[–] go_go_gadget@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago

Didn't trump already get convicted for a bunch of stuff? Doesn't seem like he received any sentencing. I'd say start there and throw his ass in prison.

[–] Murse@slrpnk.net 42 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Maybe prosecute for the myriad of blatantly illegal shit that's already public knowledge, then investigate the rest once he's already in prison?

We're going to be investigating this fucker's crimes for the next 50 years.

[–] AshMan85@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

In other words, dont Merrick garland it.

[–] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago

If and when we take back the power that’s being gerrymandered out of our grasp currently, we’ll begin investigating his actions and ultimately applaud ourselves when we confirm what is already very, very obvious. He might be dead of natural causes but at least we investigated. Meanwhile, every one suffering the wrath of his ego and the cruelty of his minions just needs to sit tight and trust the process.

Nah Robert, fuck you and your plans. Fuck your party and your committees. You’re useless sacks of shit who’ve squandered power in the past and will squander it again once (if) you take it back while the innocent suffer and die at the hands of this regime. Too little, too late. I hope history records for posterity that the ineptitude of the Democrats, while not equal to the crimes of MAGA, is like modern day Chamberlains. Ya fucked around and the rest of us have to be the ones who found out.

[–] dizzle18@lemmy.zip 97 points 1 day ago (4 children)

"Preparation, letters, and research." You better watch out, Trump administration. You've got some strongly worded letters COMING IN HOT. The concern that Democrats are feeling right now will be fucking PALBABLE from coast to coast.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 8 points 16 hours ago

Schumer has got his signature look loaded.

[–] jimmy90@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

i know you'd rather keep trump in power

do nothing you will have your wish

[–] TronBronson@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago

They’re going to ask you pointed question but you won’t have to provide serious answers. Then… you will be free to go.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 1 day ago

Get ready to be SLAMMED

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 63 points 1 day ago (3 children)

All the jaundiced takes aside, this is what they should be doing right now.

[–] Bustedknuckles@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Seriously, it feels like people think Dems should be building an oubliette right now. The process of rooting out and punishing corruption/incompetence starts with investigations (if you don't have absolute power) - so they'd better be damn ready to hit the ground running

[–] orlyowl@piefed.ca 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The problem was nearly four years of "this time we're really gonna get Trump" in the context of the J6 investigation, the documents he hoarded in his bathroom, etc, and not a damn thing actually happened. The man is white and wealthy and we had four years to see what white and wealthy gets you - teflon skin apparently.

So it's a little bit hard to imagine dems coming out hard enough to secure consequences of any kind for him. I'm hopeful, sure, and I'm glad they are planning. What I lack faith in is the effectiveness of the plans.

[–] SparroHawc@piefed.world 5 points 22 hours ago

There was a lot getting lined up, and then the fucker got re-elected. I'm pretty sure he would have faced consequences if he wasn't president.

He's spent his entire second term dismantling the nation, probably in part to try to make sure it doesn't actually have the ability to punish him.

I think everyone agrees, we just don't have faith that it'll bear fruit. There's been someone in the party doing this since Trump won his first primary, but they've always been stopped at some level by ANY degree of opposition, from thinly veiled foot dragging to blatant corruption.

[–] go_go_gadget@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Shouldn't they be gearing up to make Trump serve appropriate sentencing for the crimes he's already been convicted of? Hasn't he been convicted of enough felonies to serve a life sentence?

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 10 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Just focus on not deporting all of us or making us all into slaves. That would be a positive.

I got stopped by a cop on my way to my home after a long ass day of challenging work. Now, after not being murdered by that cop, I drive an extra few Miles to evade the location where that cop always parks.

C'mon! What the fuck! OK so he didn't punch me or kill me this time. What about tomorrow? Should I always drive at 25mph everywhere just to make sure that cop doesn't stop me?

They stopped me because I forgot my little registration sticker.....wrong! Nobody can pick out a registration sticker that quick. They just saw my brown face and wanted an easy stop.

But yeah, how about the cops not murdering me in public? I would gladly vote for that.

Great, laying the groundwork for 10 years worth of beuarecratic foot dragging. The dems suck at doing this sort of thing.

Why investigate Trump at this point? Go after everyone around him with state charges. There are a bunch of criminals around him. Right now they are not afraid of doing crimes for the orange man.

If they want to be trusted again they should investigate Bidens ignoring of the Leahy laws as well. we need to be a nation of laws again and that means going after everyone who breaks the law whether they are in your party or in office or not.

Everyone of every party who has supported this genocide belongs impeached, in shackles, and in jail. Our standing laws say so.

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

I completely agree, but I want to emphasize something. That "AS WELL" is putting in a lot of work in this sentence man...

They had 10 years really. If they took the Russian thing seriously, they would’ve prevented Facebook from providing Russian propaganda to the masses during election season to the tune of billions of dollars.. they instead, invested in Facebook and enjoyed the gains on all of this

[–] Zizzy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Trump specifically should have been in prison for blatant crimes well before he ever even ran the first time in 2000. It was already public knowledge by the time i was in high school in the 00's. And thats what i, a stupid kid not in NYC knew.

26 years really, If they would have slowed down the consolidation of power in media empires…. And prevented an administration from cozying up to Fox News to advocate for torturing prisoners. The marriage of politicians and media has been going wrong my whole life: they don’t care they abuse it too.

Virtually everyone in this administration should be arrested.

[–] TronBronson@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

How about prepared to throw him in jail in an immigrant detention center indefinitely while we take 10 years to bring up charges? Good enough for a random Iraqi but not the president?

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

So as to appear to be doing something?
