I'm trying to work out how to model the destruction of the towers using glizzies. What would I have to build the towers out of if I wanted to throw hotdogs at them to destroy them?

Cardboard is obviously too strong. Wax paper has too much tensile strength but crumples satisfactorily. Does anyone have ideas on what I should use as the tower materials?

jenga towers?

hot dogs can't melt steel beams

[–] solomonschuler@lemmy.zip 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

but accelerating that hot dog to the speed of light and you could probably do some damage...

[–] Krusty@quokk.au 2 points 5 hours ago

0.67 percent the speed of light would be enough. That's mach 5800, or 2000 km/s. A 50g hot dog would have around 10^11 J kinetic energy.

If you accelerated a 50g hot dog to 10 percent light speed you'd probably have enough energy there to destroy civilization.

Paper walls. Maybe popsicle stick framing. If regular paper is too thick still, that thin stuff you use for gift bags should be ok. Or if you're really desperate tissues or low quality toilet paper.

playing cards of course.

I would use your mom. She goes down so easily.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

TOO easily, though. OP wants something that requires at least some effort.

What level of accuracy are you looking for? The towers weren’t destroyed by the jets; they punched holes in the side and damaged the overall structural integrity while starting massive fires and causing glass to shatter.

The towers were demolished after the fact via controlled explosive charges because they were no longer safe to enter.

The towers were demolished after the fact via controlled explosive charges because they were no longer safe to enter.

Source on that? Wikipedia seems to say that they suffered a progressive collapse on their own in part because of structural damage from the hits, in part from fires heating the steel supports enough to seriously weaken them.

I watched the plane crash into the building, then witnessed through media reports the cleanup and demolition?

There was definite structural damage, as I said, but the impact didn’t bring the towers down.

What Wikipedia says doesn’t disagree with that.

Ricotta cheese, 42 days old.

Dried ramen? You'll need to fill the weiners with fuel, if you haven't already.

Office prank. It doesn't need to be scientific, the towers dont need to catch fire but if the hotdog goes through them and it takes a moment to collapse then that is ideal.

I was considering jello towers but that might require a lot of food engineering unless I use like little smokies for the planes.

Uh, spaghetti and blu tack? It would probably need extra weight though. Reinforced wet sand?

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 2 points 13 hours ago

There truly are stupid questions.
