Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

In a declaration filed in federal court, Leo Garcia Venegas said he was parking in front of his house in Silverhill, Alabama, on the morning of May 2 when an unmarked SUV blocked him in. Venegas claimed that before he could hand his Alabama-issued REAL ID to the two federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers who approached him, they pulled him out of the truck he was driving and handcuffed him.

What makes the incident extraordinary is that Venegas is the lead plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit challenging DHS' immigration enforcement policies, and it was the third time he's been handcuffed and detained by ICE agents. Venegas was detained twice in 2025 during raids on private construction sites where he was working, even though he had a REAL ID identifying him as a U.S. citizen.

Nope, only people with functioning brains.

Years of eroding the education system coupled with social media means that this is a dwindling population.

The guy's laughing all the way to the bank, and the next, and the next...

The article implies his skin isn't too dark and he is a he.

These are things a US lawyer can work with well if he can afford the upfront cost of Justice.

Edit; Yup. That's where we at.

Often, attorneys will operate on a contingency-fee basis

I wish it could come out of someone's pocket other than OURS.

even though he had a REAL ID identifying him as a U.S. citizen.

I don't think REAL ID can be used to explicitly identify you as a US citizen. But it can be used to identify you as a legal resident of some form (either a citizen or a permanent resident). So they should still be good enough.

But when have ICE agents in this administration ever cared about legality or proof of anything. Gotta make them quotas!

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 58 points 1 month ago

ICE doesn't care about legality. My coworker was kidnapped by ICE and they held him and his brother for eight months. Their mother fought these brown shirts at every step to release them, but any legal document she and the lawyer presented was dismissed by ICE as being fake.

No, they're the brownshirts. They'll be purged before the SS takes over.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The Proud Boys, 3 Percenters, etc, are the Brownshirts.

ICE was perfectly positioned to take over as the new SS, but they got a little too froggy a little too fast, and they got shut down. Now it's doubtful that they'll be able to ever rise to their previous power.

Some other government entity will have to become the new SS, but it's already starting to come apart, and I doubt any agency could rise at this point. Todd Flinstone is trying to weaponize the DoJ, but the judges aren't buying it, and if any of those cases ever manage to come in front of a jury, we are going to see a major discussion over jury nullification in this country.

MAGA has peaked, and they are already wilting. The Midterms are still going to a bloodbath, even with MAGA gerrymandering. That will be the Dem's Normandy Invasion, the point where the MAGA downfall becomes inevitable, even to them. That's when the fleas will be leaping off the Lame Duck's ass, and running for cover.

Yeah, the SA was characterized by random mob-violence. SS are the ones who oversaw the camps. ICE has SS vibes.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

So, they SA.

You can beat the charge, but you can't beat the ride. Or the 3 weeks in prison, or the bond, or the lawyer fees, or the lost job, or the inconvenience, etc.

"Your honor, my client stands accused of falsely arresting an innocent man twice. However, the record clearly shows that he, in fact, arrested him three times. My client is therefore innocent and I move to have all charges dismissed."

It is sad how ICE treats legal citizens with no criminal history the same as how police treat deadly criminals, yet for some reason both turn their heads when the illegals and criminals are running the country.

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's just cops doing cop stuff. For most cops, the worst offense you can commit is challenging their ego. ICE cops say you're illegal, so you provide proof of legal status which refutes that accusation, and now you're tackled for made-up bullshit.

They don't turn their heads to those running the country. Cops are their private security, paid for by your tax dollars. Cops are and always have been an army existing to protect capital and punish the poor and minorities. Anybody who thinks otherwise fell for the copaganda. There are a few good apples in the bunch, and they will be assimilated or purged from the bad apple club within a few years.

Good lord. You really adopted some weird habits.

I'll bet his lawyer got giddy when he heard about the third arrest.
