If you are here asking: "Is this a science meme?"

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn't need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn't a filing cabinet of facts, it's a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what's under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged.

See the pinned paper on Shitposting as Public Pedagogy if you want the academic case for why this works.

[–] funkajunk@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

Oh, there they go

[–] Scuzzm0nkey@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Oh wait, there they go

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I find it very worrying that both fingers in the photo have the exact same fingerprint.

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 34 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They... they don't though. It's similar, but not identical... you know, like Fingerprints...

[–] BigBenis@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Right? There's clear differences if you actually look. Yes, they're similar, which is the whole point of the post.

Sir this is a lemmy’s, everything is AI slop here according to some people

[–] Jivebunny@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Also a slip of the slop tongue there

chimpanzees have a bit more of a bulge in them fingers, and if u look close enough the print on both the fingers in this image is same...

article about koala finger prints

no pictures of koala fingers

😑

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

I feel like there's not a lot of overlap between what we consider to be a major crime and chimp crimes. In other words, they aren't going to hide the fact that they murdered a dude, and theft is not something we'd be trying to prosecute them for.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 month ago

He got monkey finger

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

Wait a second...how did they get that chimp finger.

They aren't exactly passive creatures who hold still for a photo.

You cut it off didn't you.....

You monster!!!

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

They obviously made a wish using a monkey's paw.

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago

And as the monkey paw always does, it took their wish, then give them the finger.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Then they're out of luck, since chimpanzees aren't monkeys.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It corrupted their wish, like it always does.

[–] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"What? The chimp was already dead when I cut it off!" - OP, maybe

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago

if you're the one who shot him, then you don't get to say "The chimp was already dead when I cut it off!"

[–] qqq@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

No!!! I don't want a freaking toe.

Stop defiling corpses you sicko.

Now go put that back where you found it.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If a koala were to go on a spree, however....

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 month ago

... everything would be infected with Chlamydia

[–] Zier@fedia.io 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Koalas have similar patterns like Humans.

[–] Jivebunny@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Zier@fedia.io 2 points 1 month ago
