I heard about Lemmy from Mental Outlaw and it caught my interest. The Reddit API situation made me finally decide to drop Reddit and make an account on lemmy.world. I haven’t turned back since.

What about you, what brought you to the Fediverse?

I was shared an article about reddit shitting the bed (API thing) that mentioned ActivityPub and Lemmy, so I checked it out on a whim. Been around since.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 hours ago

The Reddit API situation brought me here. It's a much nicer crew.

[–] YoureHotCupCake@lemmy.world 0 points 2 hours ago

I got banned from reddit because I said Nazis don't deserve to live. When I tried to appeal it I showed numerous examples of similar things being said throughout reddit's history and that killing Nazis was an important part of my country's history. I guess its suddenly not allowed anymore on that platform so I am here now.

Also I've seen way worse said about trans people on reddit but that is OK for some reason.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 3 points 9 hours ago

Lemmy has a Canadian instance. Pretty much the only place you can have online discourse without getting spammed by bots or doxxed by some Maple MAGAt divorcee.

[–] gwl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 9 hours ago

Getting more and more annoyed by corpos turning into Nazi Bars, basically

[–] Clbull@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

IIRC I joined before the Reddit API protests. I wanted an alternative where I would be more free to speak my mind. The problem is, Voat and Ruqqus got overtaken by white supremacists, Tildes is too much of a walled garden and both Snapzu and Hubski are basically dead.

[–] VanRayInd@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Got banned by an AI on reddit, my appeal was rejected by the same AI, And after thinking it over I realized getting to see all the advertisements and bots replying to bot posts really wasn't worth the effort of creating a new profile

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 6 points 14 hours ago

I liked the idea of a federated platform run by people and not big tech.

boost for lemmy announcement post on a random community about the API pricing protest

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Reddit shat itself and on its users by forcing people to use an unusable app, and since I only found reddit tolerable via 3rd party apps I stumbled across Lemmy while looking for alternatives.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

For me it wasn't even matter of reddit only being tolerable via third party apps, third party apps were Reddit.

Reddit released their first app in 2014. My email shows I purchased "Reddit is Fun (Premium)" in 2013, and I know I used other apps before that.

Reddit is Fun WAS Reddit for me for 10+ years.

When it went away and I had to change anyway, I jumped to the closest thing. (Eventually landing on Voyager.)

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 2 points 13 hours ago

My story is the same all the way up until I eventually landed on Boost.

[–] rojoverano@leminal.space 3 points 14 hours ago

Got tired of the reddit app and decided to switch to lemmy

[–] zlatiah@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

I just had my quarter-life crisis and was starting to have a very FOSS period of my life. Forgot from where, but I heard someone mentioning Mastodon so I joined; this was months before the Reddit API fiasco

[–] QuadratureSurfer@piefed.social 5 points 16 hours ago

Same reason as many other responses here, I came here because of the Reddit API situation. The Reddit app was garbage at the time (likely still is) and losing 3rd party apps with all of their features was frustrating. The API pricing scheme was obviously set high to push out most other applications.

What really pushed me over the edge was the way that Steve Huffman acted towards the Apollo dev (Christian Selig). The Reddit CEO lied about Apollo "blackmailing" them. Luckily Christian had recorded their conversation and could prove what was actually said, even then Steve doubled down.

https://www.reveddit.com/v/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/

In the fediverse I started on Lemmy.ml, but then I saw how the Admins treated those with opposing views. I switched to Lemmy.world and stuck with it for a while. Then PieFed came out with all of its additional features. I quickly switched over and felt much more comfortable donating to their development costs.

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 hours ago

Yep same. Got a 3 day ban for jokingly saying they should have tested a mk-48 torpedo on the hantavirus cruise instead of letting them scatter to the wind like dandelion seeds.

[–] MurrayL@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

They broke RIF with the API changes, and Voyager for Lemmy was the recommended alternative at the time. Still here 3 years later.

I haven’t fully deleted my Reddit account because, as much as I hate to admit it, the site is often a good source of information for hobby projects etc, but I’ve gone completely read-only. I get what I need and then leave - no voting, no comments, no messaging.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 28 points 1 day ago

I heard about Lemmy on Reddit around the time of the Reddit API lockdown, and it appealed to me, so I joined and have been here since

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 4 points 16 hours ago

My reddit app stopped working one day and I had to choose between my mental health and more suffering and I chose suffering.

[–] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I created a Mastodon account in 2022 when Musk took over Twitter, but wasn't really active there. When Reddit closed down their API in 2023 I started using Lemmy daily. Now I'm on Mastodon, Lemmy, PieFed, PeerTube, Bookwyrm and more. Love the fediverse!

[–] Keshara@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I just made an account on Bookwyrm last week but I'm kind of confused with it. Is it just basically public reviewing of books you've read/reading?

[–] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 2 points 20 hours ago

I'm using it to track what books I've read and to discover new books to read by following others. But you can also create read later lists, write and read reviews, rate books, comment on others reviews or status updates. Also, every time a book isn't available on Bookwyrm I enjoy to enter the metadata and make it available for everyone.

[–] OriginEnergySux@lemmy.world 9 points 21 hours ago

Got banned on Reddit because i said the world was flat (sarcastically joking with another user) then the mod banned me for breaking a sub rule (spreading misinformation or something), then i got perma banned for ban evasion, so i looked for an alternative to reddit.

[–] LSNLDN@slrpnk.net 3 points 17 hours ago

It was the API bullshit about 3 years ago now, Apollo for Reddit was the only useable format and with that gone I was desperate for the old internet. So much better here

[–] CTDummy@aussie.zone 9 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

The only useable app on ios (imo) for reddit for the longest time was Apollo. The dev had something like Kofi setup so people could toss him some money for his long term efforts. Reddit one day decides to charge for API use or something along those lines which would end up costing them ~~hundreds of thousands of dollars~~ (see end). I think they accused people of profiting off their API. Keep in mind Apollo was so popular because the reddit app was utter shit, but they can monetise users on their own app easier (and ads). An app a sizeable portion of the iOS community had been using for years, gone within weeks due to reddit greed. Fuck that place and fuck reddit staff.

The app is still in the App Store, Christian’s eulogy says it best.

Apollo was an iOS app for browsing Reddit from 2015 to 2023. In 2023 Reddit announced significant price changes to their API, going from free to potentially costing tens of millions of dollars per year, with 30 days notice before developers would start incurring charges. As a result, Apollo was forced to shut down after the better part of a decade building for an incredible, supportive community. With over 100,000 five star ratings, and many accolades, I was incredibly proud of what Apollo accomplished.

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 8 points 22 hours ago

I simply wanted a fresh space to build new communities on a service that better promotes the visibility of content. Reddit is busy, but it's also old and tired. Every community name is taken. All the names are used up. Some are actively maintained with enthusiasm, some are run by skeleton crews and others are mostly abandoned. Just because a site has all the people doesn't mean you can get engagement there because more people also means more competition for visibility.

[–] DeckPacker@piefed.social 2 points 17 hours ago

I am a huge believer in free software and researched a bit if there was any open source social media.

I found out the Fediverse was a pretty successful attempt at this and now I am active mostly on piefed and Mastodon.

Contrary to most people here, I don't have a huge gripe with Reddit, that I wouldn't have with any other corporate owned social media. I am here mostly because I believe in this project and want to see it evolve. I don't simply see it as a Reddit / Twitter alternative.

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago

Ironically, a Reddit mod sent me this way (well, it was probably a bot). Somehow I'd managed to play by the rules for 13 years, but what do I know? Apparently it's bad to suggest someone with very clear emotional issues find someone they trust to talk to about things - a friend, relative, or professional. It was a short interaction with a random commenter, but I was genuinely trying to be helpful.

I was banned for ... bullying? Hate speech? Something like that?

Who knows. I forget.

I went and deleted it all, anyway. My entire account. No training their AI from my data, thanks.

And fuck 'em all to Uranus!

This place is far more interesting, generally the people are far more open, intelligent, and polite to begin with (and not automatically looking to go to war because someone else had the temerity to slightly disagree with them over politics, art, religion, whatever). There is definitely a more community feel overall.

I wish I'd been banned from Reddit sooner!

[–] fizzle@quokk.au 6 points 23 hours ago

I was looking for an alternative long before the reddit API thing. I had encountered lemmy and logged in a few times but it was a shit show. Just a couple of prolific posters from .ml spamming propaganda.

Not really knowing any of the background and the proclivities of the devs, it was bizarre. I felt like this progressive new decentralised network had been infested by pariahs.

Every 6 months or so I'd log in just to make sure I hadn't misunderstood something. Weird.

Anyhow, then the reddit API thing happened and suddenly there was enough normal people around to just block .ml

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Permabanned.

[–] kbal@fedia.io 4 points 21 hours ago

I wanted to try out this "twitter" thing everyone was talking about in 2019, but it wouldn't let me sign up without a mobile phone so I went with fedi instead.

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

Reddit imploded and I never went back, simple as.

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 4 points 22 hours ago

I came here when I wanted to show some solidarity for the API protests by not using Reddit until they're over. Figured I'd take the chance to try out some alternatives, and stuck with /kbin, now Mbin.

[–] tangible@piefed.social 3 points 20 hours ago

I don't care much for the "fediverse" as a concept, I just wanted a non-US alternative to reddit.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 4 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

I got Perma banned from Reddit for ban evasion. So I went looking for alternatives.

I am not really sure what was the final straw with my main account to get it perma banned. I am pretty sure it was something obnoxious I said about someone in Trump Administration. Or maybe it was me being a dick in r/movies. The stupid shit that stays on repeat in that sub was just idiotic.

Anyway my main account got banned and when. I was drunk and not thinking I logged in with one of my alt account to visit some of my favorite porn subs and it got perma banned too.

I have other reddit accounts but I have just moved on. I do miss some of the subs though.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 21 hours ago

Reddit turning to nazi infested shit while simultaneously making the site annoying to even view by ending API support and making their web layout even shittier than it already was without using the old.reddit domain.

[–] werty@sh.itjust.works 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Permanently banned from reddit for ban evasion. I didn't know I wasn't allowed to subscribe to incompatible subbreddits. I think one of them was conspiracy, don't remember the other. I just think conspiracy theories are entertaining.

[–] Cantaloupe@lemmy.fedioasis.cc 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)
[–] werty@sh.itjust.works 4 points 23 hours ago

Sometimes they get mad when you interact with things they don't like and shadowban you. Then when you intetact with their sub they ban you for ban evasion. I don't really understand what happened, all i know is some lefty sub banned me for interacting with r/conspiracy and it spiralled from there.

[–] hexagonwin@lemmy.today 3 points 22 hours ago

i had a lemmy acc since about 2020 after reading about it on privacytoolsio (probably). mostly moved here as primary after reddit fucked up in 2023

[–] Libb@piefed.social 2 points 22 hours ago

Reddit acting even more like a dick. That was a few years ago and, as far as I can see, things over there things have not changed in anyway making me willing to go back. Which is kinda sad, there were quite a few sub I enjoyed a lot, and a few users as well.

[–] herculeskan@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 day ago

I saw a post in Instagram saying that my data in social media it's being selling to Israel. And also muy feed on Facebook were really pro Israel, despite that I don't like that, also the political stuff due always showed me things from the right-wing of my country. I realized that they has been traying wash my brain all the time, it were like that always. When the epstain fales revelead that he was active on 4chan and /pol was created by his suggestion; and geslaine Maxwell were a reddit moderator. I realized that all the close source social media is used only to create psyops.
