to be honest it could also be "Fuck Visa and fuck Mastercard"

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 2 months ago

They take a pretty big bite.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Don't forget AmEx, the greediest of the bunch. 🀌🏼

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

how could I remember, I don't live in the US

[–] MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Because AmEx is accepted in over 200 countries and is one of the largest credit card networks and credit card issuers in the world, not just the US?

[–] basxto@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 months ago

Visa and mastercard also do more than just credit card, they also have debit card networks.

[–] Kanda@reddthat.com 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yet in my country there's no place taking cash only, I have not withdrawn cash since my weed-buying days

[–] RisingSwell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

I don't even withdraw cash for buying weed...

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

Sorry, what? 😢

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 16 points 2 months ago

If a lot of your business, like say a small library, is $0.10 at time, you will lose money ringing it up on a card.

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I went somewhere that refused to accept American Express because it wasn't worth the fees.

[–] UndergroundParking@lemmy.cafe 9 points 2 months ago

Most local shops don't accept amex. Definitely all the local ones.

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 months ago

Amex has at least double the fees of the others. So very understandable

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 1 points 2 months ago

If they can accept American Express, they should.

American Express gets a bad wrap in the merchant/e-commerce industry, but out of visa/mastercard, they do the least amount of evil.

[–] jve@lemmy.world 30 points 2 months ago (1 children)

More like credit card fees.

Also, your meme is backwards.

It can be both

[–] garth@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Getting work done in your house? Ask if they offer a cash discount.

[–] TAG@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What discount? Every contractor I have hired quoted me the cash price, though they will accept a credit card via a service that makes me pay the credit card fee (and then some).

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah, it's not that there is a discount for paying cash. It's that there is a surcharge for not doing so.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This includes checks, for any who may not be aware. So you don't literally need hundreds or thousands of dollars in cash, just to have it available in your debit account.

In my experience, though, every professional will tell you what the cost is and how much more it is if you pay with a card. It doesn't make them any extra money for you to use a card, so they don't try to encourage it.

[–] garth@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Sure, you could pay with a check, but where's the fun in that? I have absolutely paid contractors with thousands of dollars in cash stuffed into an envelope. If you ask the teller at your bank nicely, they will even band the bills into tidy stacks so you can feel like you're in a mobster movie.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 4 points 2 months ago

Most banks and credit unions make it a pain to withdraw thousands at once. They don't really want you to do that.

[–] UndergroundParking@lemmy.cafe 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I used to have this attitude mere decade ago. But that I've realised how much everyone wants to fuck me I'm trying to switch back to cash. There are places that do not accept it! Technically illegal - it's legal tender - but nobody is enforcing it.

As a side benefit, I'm a bit more aware or my spending. There's something in the brain that has a much better grasp of physical money.

[–] isles@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Cash is legal tender for debts, retail is not required to accept it, but any loan you have is.

[–] UndergroundParking@lemmy.cafe 1 points 2 months ago

Huh. Today I've learnt!

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

The meme is the wrong way around.

[–] chortle_tortle@mander.xyz 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The power of memes exist beyond their origin 😌

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 months ago

Some of us still follow the old ways.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Or money laundering, thats what most of my local cash only businesses are doing.

[–] diffaldo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Interesting! Do you have a chicken restaurant called Los Pollos Hermanos around there?

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 months ago

[citation needed]

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I would be happy to launder someone's cash

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 19 points 2 months ago (3 children)

See also: "do you want to donate a few dollars to charity?"

No, multimillion dollar business, I don't want to pay for your tax cut

[–] TAG@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

I hate when grocery stores collect food for a food bank.

The store makes a profit from me buying food to donate and they get a positive press release when they donate the food.

[–] basxto@discuss.tchncs.de -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That’s a zero sum. They only get a cut for what you donate, why should they have to pay taxes for your donation?

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 4 points 2 months ago

Because they take credit for my donation as if it's their gesture of kindness

[–] bequirtle@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not how it works!!

Businesses can't claim your donations as their own for tax purposes. Even if they could... deductions come out of your taxable income, not the actual taxes you pay. If you gave $1 to mcdonald's for charity, they would make $1 of income and then deduct $1, so there would be zero effect on the taxes they pay.

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

But the tax-free income generated from the donation can go back towards buying stock in McDonald's or some other form of capital for corporate.

[–] bequirtle@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago

No, the tax-free income gets donated....

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

we only accept cash

we don't want to fund the bombing of children's hospitals

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 8 points 2 months ago

Hey pal - get your facts straight!

We also bombed that girls elementary school and round up immigrants and illegally kidnapped a politician from another country and now we're paying for a fucking ballroom!

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 months ago

We're using your cash transactions as cover for our other cash businesses.

[–] BilboBargains@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Paying with cash is the acceptable face of tax evasion

[–] Vinylraupe@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago

Username checks out :)

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I dislike places that give you a cash discount equal to tax. like if you're going to evade taxes, at least share the profits

[–] Mubelotix@jlai.lu 3 points 2 months ago

Funny to think that some people pay to do the opposite. Not paying taxes gives you money you can't spend and you are going to have to launder it anyway
