  • Donald Trump is rushed from the White House Correspondents' Dinner after suspected gunshots heard

  • Attendees of the dinner ducked under tables amid scenes of widespread confusion during the incident, our Washington correspondent reports from the event

  • A shooter has been taken into custody, Trump writes on Truth Social

Story is developing in real time, check the actual link for more details, images and videos.

EDIT:

I flipped to CSPAN; apparently Trump is going to be doing a press conference at the White House in ~30 minutes, all cabinet members are uninjured, as well as seemingly all other guests, and the Correspondents' Dinner is going to be rescheduled within 30 days.

EDIT 2, from the 'article':

Still not clear what happened

published at 20:48

Bernd Debusmann Jr

White House reporter, reporting from dinner

We still have no official confirmation of what took place.

But Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich, a member of the White House Correspondent's Association's board, posted on X that they've been told that an individual attempted to pass through metal detectors with a gun.

President Trump, according to Heinrich, was held in a nearby room and wanted the dinner to continue, though he just posted on social media that law enforcement have asked him to leave.

EDIT 3:

Trump has posted a video and two pictures of the assailant to his Truth Social.

Video (Seems like a smartphone aimed at security camera monitor):

https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/116468650367386223

Pic 1:

https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/116468652052256305

Pic 2:

https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/116468652963767750

The man appears to have bum rushed through the metal detector area at a full sprint, but was stopped by a volley of shots from different security personnel.

... and apparently, according to Trump just now at the press conference, the guy shot one Secret Service agent, but he was wearing body armor, and is apparently not badly injured.

This can be seen in the video, the srcurity guy center frame appears to be shot in the lower abdomen, then quickly draws his weapon and begins firing at the now out of frame assailant, who sprinted past.

Subramanian says Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk who was shot and killed at an event last year, was also whisked away and was in tears

She needs to honor her late husband and just accept that some deaths may be necessary to keep the spirit of the 2nd amendment intact.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 34 points 6 days ago

I hope she lives the rest of her life in fear.

[–] pleaseletmein@lemmy.zip 27 points 6 days ago

Mysteriously, eye drops were found at her table.

Get ready for a week of all the most insufferable liberals you know wringing their hands about how it’s SO UNCOUTH to be disappointed he didn’t bite it, while all Democratic elected officials fall all over themselves to announce that “political violence has no place” in your country 🙄

Edit: oh, look, clown shit

I swear to Christ you people deserve whatever you get.

[–] duckshuffgoose@piefed.social 54 points 6 days ago

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 6 days ago

None of the liberals I know are doing this.

Political leaders will because they don't like the idea of one of their own being assissinated.

Where do you see that?

CNN maybe, but they're owned by a far right oligarch, just like every other media corporation.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 14 points 6 days ago (11 children)

I’m just remembering what social media looked like the last time this happened

Are all of these shooters going to Storm Trooper training academy or something?

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 44 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (5 children)

My guess, and this is a total guess, would be that if someone tried to go through metal detectors with a gun, and then it alarmed... my guess is all the shots that were heard would have been security turning that person into swiss cheese, before they got off a shot.

... If they were even going for their gun.

We don't have anything approaching that level of detail or info yet though.

People vastly overestimate their accuracy with a firearm. I want to say military doctrines/history generally show 100-300 meters as "the sweet spot" for a military rifle... with independent studies tending to put that at closer to 10-30 for an individual. Optics CAN help that (it stops being "line up your sight picture" and instead "pull the trigger when the dot is on the thing you want to kill") except that... most people don't have the time or resources to actually zero those properly. And this gets even worse for pistols.

This is why the vast majority (to the point I would almost say "all") of political assassinations are either a full on military hit squad... or a lone gunman at point blank range. Lincoln, Reagan, Abe, even the dude what looked vaguely like Luigi. Which... there are a LOT of reasons people are so suspicious of the murder of JFK to this very day.

The shooting tonight at the Washington Hilton demonstrates the need to have a White House ballroom, President Trump tells reporters in the press briefing room.

So he's taking this opportunity to whine about his ballroom. As one does. Perfectly normal. "An awful lot of Americans seem to want me dead, that's why I need a party fortress!"

The WHCD is a private event, no affiliation with the government. It presumably would never happen at a White House ballroom.

The door dash lady didn't generate enough attention, so they are upping the dramatics.

that distraction was done to death, like he has his grocery store, mcdonalds, his garbage truck gaffes. and hes constant falling asleep like a child would when the parents confront them about a problem they caused isnt working anymore. even bringing out rfk jr and JD VANCE out of the woodwork dint help.

Wasn't it leaked in a memo that Trump was planning some kind of "confrontation" at the dinner?

Is anyone stupid enough to believe this asshole?

[–] FortyTwo@lemmy.world 17 points 5 days ago (2 children)

That was my first reaction too. I usually try to stop myself from falling into conspiracy thinking, but in this case it's hard to do when a few days prior the Internet has been full with an alleged memo with plans to stage something dramatic for the press at this specific event.

Can't rule out a real attack but at this point I wouldn't exactly say it's the option with the highest probability for this government filled with tv personalities at record low popularity...

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

also happened more than once, several assassination attempts with no followup, or investigation by the news in detail, and not vague, " caught this person". Also ms Lying cross leavitt mentioned there will be some of shooting later on.

Well he's definitely going to win one prize: us president with the highest number of assassination attempts.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_assassination_attempts_and_plots?wprov=sfla1

I vote we call this award the "Nobel Rest in Peace" prize.

[–] I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

It's easy to have the highest number of attempted assassinations when you repeatedly stage them.

“HIGHEST APPROVAL EVER” also lowkey 3 assassination attempts. This asshole is living in the biggest bubble since the dot com boom.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 26 points 5 days ago

Little bit off topic but... This was the first time Trump attended. Biden attended in 2024 as usual and Colin Jost made jokes. Last year they didn't have any entertainer. Trump won and they immediately tried to appease him by breaking with the tradition and not making any jokes about the administration. This is US press in a nutshell. Access is the most important thing for them. They will be nice to a fascist just to be able to sit in the same room with him.

[–] sen@lemmy.zip 25 points 5 days ago

Damn, too bad. Maybe next time.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 16 points 5 days ago

BBC has video, it is barely noticeable and no one reacts to the "gun shots" until Secret Service starts moving.

Edit: just noticed the link in the post is the BBC article. I am not a smart man lol

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Hehe, there's a reason I went with the BBC.

finger guns, winks

No wait!

is shot and then tackled by Secret Service

The vid was hilarious. Someone leapt at the opportunity to bounce vance, otherwise everyone left trump up there long enough to absolutely drill him were a shooter so inclined

Staged, but fucken funny as hell

“There is absolutely no place for politically motivated violence in the United States of America,” assistant US attorney Michael Friedman told Friedrich.

weird, maybe you guys should stop the administration from perpetrating a ton of politically motivated violence, then, instead of going after those merely reacting to it

I mean, Trump has had the National Guard patrolling DC for... months now? Since his 'military parade'. That never actually stopped.

But uh... yeah, nationwide martial law?

Who fucking knows, why not.

Having seen other "rush the president away" situations, it's always been the secret service dudes in black suits defending him. When did he start taking a military force in full tactical gear to dinner? It's not like they were hiding behind the scenes. They just took a few side steps to form a human wall in front of the secret service.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (6 children)

Basically everywhere every President has ever been in at least the last ~30 years, they're shadowed by the suited Secret Service, the obvious, visual security, and a or multiple tactical response teams, essentially SWAT teams, just in case something like this happens.

They were in fact hiding behind the scenes, ready to jump into action if needed.

That's actually just normal Presidential security detail, what isn't normal is when the President is moving about or planning public appearances so suddenly that there isn't enough time to properly draft up a security plan and get people in place.

Thats a big part of why the Butler Penn Ear Zinger ended up happening:

Firstly, Trump wasn't the President, so, less assigned security importance.

Secondly, the Trump Campaign has a history of stiffing the bill and not actually properly paying venues that he appears at, so a lot of event venues refuse to work with him.

Thirdly, Trump Campaign events are often announced and planned last minute, not enough time to actually draft up and implement a proper security plan, partially because of thing 2.

Finally, its well documented that the security coordination at Butler was a shit show. You had Secret Service, and a variety of local and regional police outfits, half of them didn't know who was supposed to be where, doing what.
