Come on Murica! We need to liberate all those muslim turkeys for Thanksgiving and we get our Huge Sofia back! Yee-haw!

[–] borderstolutenfolk@lemmy.wtf 5 points 6 days ago

Wasn't this a pagan site before christianity?

[–] MrMcGasion@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

As someone who lives in South Carolina, there is one small benefit to this guy being such a nutcase, He's distracting Lindsey and his PACs, we've gotten a couple fliers in the mail from Lindsey Graham affiliates calling out Mark Lynch's crazy antics (most specifically his calls to legalize cocaine). Haven't seen one ad attacking the leading Democrat, Annie Andrews. And sure, that will probably pick up after the primaries are over, but I do love watching Republicans waste money fighting each other.

I can’t tell if this is real or satire

[–] protist@retrofed.com 109 points 1 week ago (6 children)

I thought surely it must be satire, but this was legitimately posted on his Facebook account. I have no words. I guess we're trying to bring back Byzantium now

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

Finally, my collection of byzantine coins will be worth something

US's writers have gotten really lazy since season 240 or so. It's like they turned the whole show over to a Poe's Law bot. I keep hoping for something good...there's interesting fan fic, but they never seem to follow up.

[–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago

I did the dirty but couldn't find it. I need a deep cleanse now.

Does he not realize that the Hagia Sophia is not under the control of the US in any way, shape, or form?

[–] Jacob_Mandarin@lemmy.world 49 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well yeah. But since the war in iran is now totally and completely won. They need a new barbaric country to liberate.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 19 points 1 week ago (4 children)

So they are want to bomb Turkey next?

[–] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

Not next, Cuba goes first.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Netanyahu already said so.

If I had to guess, I'm assuming this is coming from the seemingly common belief amongst the crowd of a certain political persuasion that Christians are the most persecuted people in the world ever, and that Muslims are trying to kill us all or convert us all to their religion?

[–] SPRUNT@lemmy.world 35 points 1 week ago

and that Muslims are trying to kill us all or convert us all to their religion.

It's always projection with these motherfuckers.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

They have weaponized their persecution complex.

Surely the good people of South Carolina will not elect this obvious incompetent cretin to the Senate.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 2 points 1 day ago

What percentage of the good people of SC even know what the Hagia Sophia is?

[–] GirthBrooksPLO@lemmy.world 37 points 1 week ago

That's really what's on America's mind. The Hagia Sophia.

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 35 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

For those who don't know, the original Hagia Sophia was one of the most impressive construction speed-run of all time. Completed in just under 6 years with ~~4th~~ 6th century tech. They botched it a bit so the roof fell but still very impressive.

Edit: 6th century tech, first church was made in 4th century, current structure with the speed run was started in 532 and finished in 537.

[–] AnarchoEngineer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What’s impressive is that it’s survived centuries of earthquakes without seriously falling apart

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Yeah, they would have had a clean run if they had made the dome more curved. It was a bit flat and an earthquake took the dome down and destroyed the altar. Still very impressive and definitely been well maintained.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Muslims got Hagia Sophia and Christians got Alhambra and the Mosque of Cordoba. Bet he doesn’t want to return those.

Okay, ignoring that reading this has made me even stupider - I always assume there was SOME kind of thought process that lead to such statements (yeah yeah I know, haha politicians and thought processes ololollol) and I'm very interested in this one. What exactly happened there? Where did the connection between the Hagia Sophia and the office of senator for South Carolina come from? What is he free-associating?

[–] plyth@feddit.org 25 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Where did the connection between the Hagia Sophia and the office of senator for South Carolina come from?

He is a senator. The Roman empire continues.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even senators need some kind of prompt to produce their nonsense. Who told this guy the Hagia Sophia was in the circle of influence of the SC senator?

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

US politicians believe their constituents elect them to police the middle east. See everything in Iran, Iraq, their rabbid support for Israel, etc.

They truly believe that God granted them this power to spread his war on Muslims. That's why a SC sensor thinks he has control over Hagia Sophia.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Okay, yes, that makes sense (as in, I can see where this is coming from, not as in, it's sensible). But a senator? Potus, sure, obviously. Possibly a governor even. A senator? This seems like a fundamental misunderstanding of the office itself.

[–] MrKoyun@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

It is. But you see, that doesn't matter.

I'm sure they'll go after the Vatican next. Because it's not Catholic enough.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sean Hannity just renounced his Catholicism because of that little Trump/Pope spat.

Their “Christianity” is Messianic Trumpism.

Is he really that stupid? I mean, the intellectual demands in American politics have not been high in the last few decades, but this is a real low point.

I've been there. Beautiful building with so much history. Definitely NOT located in South Carolina.

[–] Aaron@lemmy.nz 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I wonder if some deep dark corner of his mind thought Türkiye is near Georgia, and so is South Carolina, therefore I should have a say..

Southern states breed a type of politician that is what Donald Trump is on a pettier and smaller scale - you could say they were the prototype. Try Ma Ferguson and Alfalfa Bill Murray for stupid fucks that made their way to Governor (Ma Ferguson is probably(?) the originator of “if English was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me”; Alfalfa Bill Murray almost started a Texas/Oklahoma war).

Sorta like how MTG, and Michelle Bachman before her started. National attention for saying stupid shit = avalanche of votes on name recognition in your stupid home state.
