A spokesman for Waymo told the Daily Mail the car was being manually driven at the time – and that the driver involved had been suspended.
This reminds me of the shit Tesla did: operate in autonomous mode until a fraction of a second before a crash and then disengage, placing the blame on the driver once the computer determined a crash was inevitable.
The question is not will robo-cars have accidents (they will); its will they have them much less than humans. They're already safer than human drivers and will only get more so.
Imagine believing that "driverless" cars that have to be taken over by wage slaves from the Phillipines anytime they see a strange looking rock and "can't be expected to follow" basic vehicle laws are better than human drivers.

I'm amazed these kinds of accidents even still happen. It cannot be that hard to make, "don't run into things" take priority over, "stay in your lane unless changed properly or safe alternative identified", yet here we are.
Unless their sensors are that bad, but... why so much kit if it sucks?
People with a science or engineering background can at least understand that artificial intelligence still cannot fully replace human driving, because the stability of electronic devices is affected by environmental and other factors.
