Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1779 readers
8 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

Apparently the mod likes using euphemisms for their extracting wealth from other productive members of society and really dislikes being reminded.

Hahaha, I like how he replies with a wiki link that immediately mentions stock markets and rent income ... the poster-children for parasites on society.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 1 month ago

And honestly it's a stretch to call the stock market "passive income". Most people don't think of that at all when they say it. It's 99% a euphemism for rent seeking

[–] grue@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's only a suspicion, but I think crazypeople.online might be related to hilariouschaos and/or exploding-heads. I give extra scrutiny to users from those instances just like I do with those from the .mls, for the opposite reason.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

There's just something fundamentally off about how the people from all three servers conduct themselves. Like demons trying to mimic humans.

[–] Arcanepotato@crazypeople.online 5 points 1 month ago

What an odd thing to say.

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If I could give you sleep paralysis, I would 🖕😎🖕

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think I would enjoy sleep paralysis tbh it sounds fun

Do not bully the landlords, they have feelings too... /s

I work with quite a few. Crazy part is they still have jobs renting out multiple homes. They complain about all the issues renting them out to me regularly. Doesn't seem to be worth it.

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Pity the exploiter, for it always wants more.

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Its like a black hole yet they don't realize it.

Pray to the red queen, for she brings plenty. No way this ends badly for anyone.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago

Ima break both a personal rule and a community rule in hopes of making a point. I might fail, but please do understand nothing I'm saying is trolling.

You ever hear the term "you're not wrong, you're just as asshole"?

Well, if not, then welcome to knowledge of both the saying and the fact that you're not wrong, you're just as asshole.

Yes, I just called you an asshole, which is uncivil, and not directly on topic. This means that a mod of this community might well remove this comment. They might decide that my history in this community is such that I deserve other action, such as a temp ban, a public warning, a private warning, or even a permaban.

All of those have merit in response to me calling you a technically correct asshole. I would call a permanent ban PTB in this case, considering that I did lead off saying that it wasn't a random insult. But, if would have merit and be defensible because doing so wasn't absolutely necessary in order to partake in the conversation in this community.

I could have just said YDI/baiting and pointed out that you made entirely off topic insult to a user that had not previously insulted you. I could have just dropped the YDI and said nothing else. I had choices in how to approach this.

So, why did I take such a semi aggressive choice?

Well, I think it was the sheer arrogance of the comment you made in a travel community, and the fact that you took an off topic comment being removed as something out of line.

You know, us left wingers are not excused from a minimum level of manners just because we believe we're in the right. You know those assholes that show up to family reunions and holidays and won't shut the fuck up about politics? You just did that. You walked into a community unrelated to left wing philosophy and action, and let loose a proverbial shart.

It was inappropriate, rude, and did absolutely nothing to advance the cause of economic and social reform.

Now, I tend to believe in the freedom of speech, even rude speech. You had a right to be a dick. You also have to understand and accept that when you're a dick, there may be consequences.

All that mod did was the equivalent of your grandmother pulling you aside and saying to be nice in her house. It was a completely acceptable and even handed action to take.

Now, again I'm going to break my personal rule of staying on the topic of mod actions rather than the original subject of a comment or post.

But, being real, if you expect anyone at all in the capitalist hellscape we live in to be swayed by your rolling up and doing the text equivalent of spitting in their face like a drunk uncle ranting about the brown people, you need to sit down and stop making the cause look bad. The left is already outnumbered in the capitalist world, and people being raving assholes does NOTHING to help.

There, that's my equivalent of spitting in your face at the Christmas party during a drunken rant. I accept any mod actions deemed necessary.

It's rich to claim "participate in the exploitation of the working class" through a euphemism, is not political. To continue your bbq analogy, it's like seeing your rich aunt discuss strategies about union busting in her factory during the party, and when you say "hey, maybe unions are actually good" you get called an "asshole" by her spoiled shitlib kid who want to think themselves a lefty.

The fact of the matter is that the post was inherently political and particularly that statement. Me calling it out doesn't make me an asshole, (and fuck you too btw), nor do we "advance the cause of economic and social reform" by hiding in niche political comms to talk about exploitation, because we might otherwise trigger the libs who moderate us away. We agitate wherever there's injustice, especially when it makes people uncomfortable and if you don't get that, well, "then welcome to knowledge".

PS: Writing this wall of text is just hobbyless behaviour.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Eh, that's all as may be, but none of that invalidates it being an acceptable mod action to only remove the comment.

Edit: also, lemmy is a hobby. I mean, c'mon, you run this branch of it, right? That's a hobby that supports the hobby of others scrolling and shooting the shit. Which, as an aside to that, I'm glad you do! I enjoy my hobby on your hobby sometimes :)

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As far as hobbies go, punching left on the internet, is not exactly healthy behavior. I enjoy the creativity of the technical implementation, we are not the same. :P

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No worries, I only punch taint, and only with consent lol.

Legit, I have no clue how anyone can maintain anything like this as long as you have. I would burn the hell out in a year. I assume an unhealthy streak of masochism has to be involved, what with the teeny tiny glimpse of understanding I have if implementing a lemmy instance. I seriously thought at one point of trying to set one up as a learning experience and noped the hell out fast.

Shit, I wouldn't even mod a significantly active community at this point. Just don't have the energy for it. Kudos to you!

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

TMI. Wait until you learn I also run and develop the AI Horde and Fediseer. My profession is in IT infrastructure automation and this is my way of doing mutual aid, so I'm more or less uniquely positioned to do this, but I do admit that I'm a freak.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That is a ton of work.

Regardless of the disagreement over the original topic, that's impressive as hell that you're putting that much of your energy into something you believe in. I'm glad we have freaks like you in the world :)

[–] Blaze@lazysoci.al 7 points 1 month ago

Upvoted both people in the whole chain because it's a nice exchange

[–] naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This person is a known troll btw

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

Db0? Nah, not on a regular basis that I've ever seen

[–] Seasm0ke@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The only passive income that wouldnt qualify IMO is making something digital. An online training, eBook, software, video game if you don't support it. You work like hell to release it and then if you don't keep modifying it the income rolls in while youre on to the next thing.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

That's also rent-seeking in the form of copyrights btw, but as far as rent-seeking goes, I agree it's the least problematic

[–] Seasm0ke@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Would that still qualify if it is a one time purchase vs a subscription model? I can see your reasoning tho

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

That’s what Disney does. I wouldn’t exactly call what they do “least problematic”!

[–] UniversalMonk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

online training, eBook, software, video game

Yep, this is my source of passive income. Allowed me to retire early and tell my former boss to fuck off. I was sorta surprised to see that passive income was such a controversial topic of conversation here. I get some of the arguments though. But for me, being older and uneducated, this is better than slaving away for others and worrying about layoffs and stuff. I banked away enough that now I won't ever have to work again, even if the passive income goes away. I just had to, and continue to, live frugally and not be stupid with my money.

[–] fedikitty@piefed.social 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

So are they going to sell us their 12 day course or not?

[–] UniversalMonk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

PTB! And such a strange thing that they are PTB'ing over. lol

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I consider that mod a complete PTB because this comment of mine was considered "misinformation", same thread

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago

Goddamn that person is really a piece of work

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 1 month ago

I mean, he is crazy, that implies a rejection of reality

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Feels a bit heavy for a travel sub. I wouldn't qualify it as misinformation though.

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net -4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

how you do a link

!travel@crazypeople.online

and thanks, I just joined as I am a scumbag passive income guu who travels 8-9 months a year, then boomerangs home for 3-4.

I quit work when i was 40, one of the reasons was it was difficult to reconcile the explotation most work entails here in Australia at eleast. I am now 60.

I do think it's problematic though, is OP, who feels "sleighted" going to claim a pension or live off personal investments they're accumulating now when older, or just seppuku ?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

My plan for old age is the collapse of civilization.

Joking aside, I don't consider pensions "passive income" as I've been actually paying money all my working life. I do consider the whole pension system a joke and a scam most of the time and it can actually be exploitative, but at least those in it typically have to be productivity most of their lives. But ultimately the pension system should also be scrapped and replaced by a straight up social net funded by the state, if we're talking about staying in capitalism.
