We also use that word to describe an ambulance, funnily enough.

Funny thing the Japanese still use the word kranker for patient while Germans use patient.
Cf. also karute from German Karte for a patient's chart and biirusu/uirusu from German Virus and a bunch of other medical terminology Japan adopted when they were mates with Prussia.

Well yeah, countries that speak Romance languages use the Latin-derived word. English is the odd one out thanks to the French influence.
Don't worry, Krankenwagen is just the colloquial term, the technical terms are even better.
