Why does this feel like Cliff Yablonski

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 71 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This ad is what the movie Safety Not Guaranteed is based on.

I wouldn’t say it starred Kristen Bell. She appears in one scene.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

And she was the star of that scene.
I don't actually remember anyone who was in that movie.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 2 points 16 hours ago

Jake Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, Karan Soni, Jenica Bergere and Mark Duplass.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It wasn't the greatest movie but it was perfectly watchable. I've seen it at least twice? The first time for the memes, the second for having a crush on Aubrey Plaza lol.

[–] null@lemmy.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It sucked ass. It was one of those movies where it's about the color blue, but it's red the whole time and the color blue is only implied to happen just as the movie rolls credits.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago

Oh yeah like Downsizing. It's one of those movies that should have been a tax write-off but it wasn't good enough.

[–] vrek@programming.dev 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wasn't this a movie years ago? I think it was called "safety not guaranteed" or something like that.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yup. Based on this meme. It's a weird movie, which isn't surprising, but I recall it being pretty good.

[–] oneguynick@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Surprisingly good movie!

Stolen from the comments on ytmnd linked here, the original poster appears to be John Silveira: https://www.backwoodshome.com/the-time-travel-ad/

[–] captcha_incorrect@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

https://www.amazon.com/Backwoods-Home-Magazine-Sept-1997-ebook/dp/B00REOCM8I

I am tempted to buy it and see if the ads are there.

EDIT: Found the PDF, it is not the same one as referred to in the article. EDIT2: Or at least the ad is not there.

[–] sukhmel@programming.dev 2 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

If the pdf you found is from the internet archive, it seems to be abridged, but I also don't have an original one

Edit: it starts at page 256, while the ad is supposed to be on 92, I also guess that Amazon pdf also omits ads, so the only way to check is somewhere in a Canadian library

[–] captcha_incorrect@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

I thought the page 256 thing meant that it was part of something.

Any Canadians around?

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm going to respond to this, you'll know I've successfully traveled back in time if when you're reading this, the allies WIN world war 2 and Hitler survives until at least 1945.

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

By God, your a hero! I assume...

It's a shame only you will know what the prior timeline was like, but it had to have been horrible.

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Just got back...

Guys what the fuck?

HOW IS IT JUST LIKE IT WAS?!

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Now the curation is if you did go back and change things, would your memory if if change instantly since you’ve change the conditions that led to your time travel in the first place.

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

No. Your past and future do not change. You exist on a single temporal line going infinitely forward.

[–] linkinkampf19@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

Solid movie.

[–] Doug@piefed.social 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

I see three, maybe four outcomes:

  • You actually do go back in time and this person’s discovered something mind blowing that you get to be a part of. You may or may not die, or you may not be the same as you were before.
  • Shrooms. You likely won’t die and you may not be the same as you were before.
  • He’s insane and is going to kill you. You will likely die and will not be the same as you were before… because you’ll be dead, or you’ll have killed someone in self defense and, if you’ve never killed before, will be a changed person. …but also if you die and time is a circle then in a way you did go back in time, but also forwards, and nowhere? You’ll be somewhere on the Jeremy Bearimy.
  • Fourth outcome is he’s not insane enough to kill you, but is also not a time traveler. Just a high energy friend who’s likely manic but also has enough money for ads and can write with good grammar.
[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fifth:

  • Somebody wrote a cool want ad as a work of fiction.
[–] Doug@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

(i mean yes that is the correct answer, but where's the fun in that?)

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"Must bring your own weapons" slightly reduces number three for me.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'd look at it the other way. Imagine you're a murderous psycho who puts that ad out. Someone shows up at your house after PO correspondence done with little to not trail back you. They show up armed. You shoot them in "self defense" and talk about how they had a gun blah blah blah ... Accidentally left the door unlocked ... Blah blah blah

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

All these options seem to end with “you may not be the same as you were before” either explicitly or implicitly.

[–] Doug@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

My experience with Craiglist-type ads has me asking questions about my safety by default and if it’s something I can walk away from without any sort of fallout.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

That haircut proves that he is from the future.

If you go to the comments, you can see that I successfully predicted that this would become a big meme back in 2005

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I'm learning way too late that there's comments on YTMND pages

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

What a legend. I actually looked to see if the usernames matched that's awesome. 21 years goes pretty damn fast... Whew.

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

All I've seen is the trailer for that, I haven't actually got around to watching it yet, and I have to say I have no idea what that movie is going to be about, the trailer doesn't give any info away at all.
