Ugh I hate voice training so much but after yesterday's breakdown while trying and getting two "voice analysis" results showing "0% female, 92% male" I decided to watch some videos I've seen recommended, and honestly YuukoEX was the one that helped me the most because I feel like I can try to emulate her voice better than others I've heard.

After spending yesterday on exercises and trying to figure out various muscles around my throat, I managed this:

It's not much, but it's an improvement!

Also, I'm trying eye liner today! It's a little smudged in one or two spots, but it makes a HUGE difference in my own perception! I even took a face selfie! On purpose!! (for myself I am not nearly confident enough to post lol)

Don’t read too much into those percentages. IIRC app uses solely pitch to generate that ratio. It has no way of measuring how masculine or feminine your voice actually sounds.

Any woman could get 100% male just by talking deep while still sounding like a woman, and vice versa.

Pitch is one factor that humans use to assume gender, but it’s not the only one and most vocal coaches agree that it’s not even the most important one.

My speech therapist helps a lot of trans folks and she specifically recommends people don’t use the analysis feature of that app because it usually just discourages people.

I'm a CIS-woman. I just stumbled upon this post and tried the app for fun. I got 71% female and 29% male. I can also get the app to show 92% male be simply talking in a deep voice that I guarantee sounds nothing like a man but like a woman lowering her voice. Not saying that the app is useless, just take the results with a grain of salt.

Similarly, as a new trans-femme I can get this app to show >90% female, and 5% male, just by pitching higher, but my voice clearly just sounds like a softer/lighter masc voice. My base voice isn't that deep, but it is very raspy and clumsy, so I've been struggling too.

@Courtney You got this, just follow the usual guides on resonance and fullness, I only just started recently, but I can tell the resonance stuff helps, and I'm moving in the right direction. Here are the two guides I've been following, if it helps.

Thank you for experimenting and posting this! It’s really helpful to have confirmation of what we’ve been telling folk starting training.

Voice Tools is nice to get pitch where you want it and to monitor how consistent you are with it, but pitch alone is truly insufficient for voice feminization and people tend to get too focused on it because of apps like this.

Oh definitely, there's a nice chunky crystal of sodium on my plate, I'm just using it as a kind of quick reference, and since the website the other comment had shows real time data, I think I'm gonna switch to that since it's a better "quick reference" lol

My partner watches a lot of short form videos and over the recent months has been getting more and more trans and NB content, and regardless of appearance, the femme voices sound femme regardless of pitch. Heck one of the videos she was watching this morning before I even did my voice training today was specifically about how they change their voice throughout the day. Even after dropping their pitch they pointed out how their voice sounds feminine no matter what their pitch is unless they change other things.

It's just a nice indicator of mild improvement.

Thank you for telling me though, it's nice to hear input from people more experienced with feminine voices, regardless of how they got them 😊

Yeah, I'm using it as more of a pitch guide, I've got a guitar tuner so I could totally just use that, but I already had the app and it's convenient with graphs and such, so I'll use it.

I'd love to get a couple afternoons with a voice trainer, that would be FAR more effective than an app.

Heck, even a couple videos of trans women going over voice training exercises in a voice I feel I can emulate is better.

That page will report your pitch and resonance. I used voice tools quite a bit before finding this. Granted, this is a bit more fiddly to use. I've not used it in a few years because the last time I did the server wouldn't return results, but yesterdays attempt was successful. I might start using it again since you reminded me. So, thanks for that!

I hope you come to find training enjoyable. Somehow voice is one of the more affirming things I've undertaken. The ability to slam your voice back and forth between masculine and feminine is kinda fun too!

I really want to enjoy it but you know how dysphoria is...

The only concern my partner has with me doing voice training is they thought it would permanently change my voice. They're going deaf and too high or too low of a pitch is harder for them to hear. I assured them that while some speech patterns will change, I can flip back and forth and probably would mostly use my femme voice when I feel uncomfortable or am around unknown people.

I know dysphoria, but not for voice. I didn't even realize voice training was a thing until after I started HRT. I'm really kind of embarrassed that I could've overlooked such an obvious thing for so many years. Rather than dysphoria I had something more like anxiety or terror with the realization that I hadn't considered such a monumental task. I had a deep hillbilly voice. How could that possibly ever change? However, once I started watching some videos and getting the basics it all started to click. I believe singing helps a lot too.

Women (well, feminine voices) tend to enunciate more clearly than men. Your partner may have an easier time deciphering your voice on that account. Showing them that video of AlsoAshley I posted earlier may also allay your partners fears.

I've told myself that I'd flip masculine if I ever felt uneasy around someone, but so far I've only kinda bent masculine. Granted, I'm reclusive so I don't interact with many others. People often change or at least bend their voice and accent to accommodate others, sometimes unknowingly. I've heard people come back from a week long trip in the southern US with a tinge of southern accent. In fact, I've read that vocal fry (from females, in some instances) is an attempt at emulating a deeper voice to fit in with the boys or gain respect.

It thinks my voice is pretty much 50:50, which is weird because listening back on my own voice I think I sound pretty femme. Is it accurate in your experience?

I've not had professional voice training or anyone else that I trust to evaluate my progress. I can only say that the content of its report seems to accurately reflect changes that I induce. The included examples also appear to reflect its accuracy. Granted, that's all still terribly subjective.

I used it as a sort of video game whereby I'd shoot for the "highest score" (pitch and resonance) just to explore that sensation.. not with the intention of using those parameters for casual speech. My thought was that if I pushed the pendulum past the point where I wanted it to be in practice then I would land in the correct parameters during casual use.

I (think I) found that pushing to maximum pitch and resonance teaches one to change their oral and laryngeal posture to more accurately perform feminine speech.. not just pitch and resonance, but also accent. That's where your 50:50 comes in. I believe 50:50 can easily be femme with the proper accent.

I think it also plumb wrecked my hillbilly accent.. and I'm fine with that.

Honestly. Pitch plays in a feminine sounding voice. But I'm sure it's not the best indicator.

Some women have a more "male" pitch and still sound really feminine.

In my case I could with "relative" ease go with a higher pitch and I modified my resonance. And yet I don't good. What I mean is, that's good to do that but that's not the only focus. There's a prosody that is really hard to train.

keep taking and saving selfies girl! especially the ones you’re not super proud of. soon you’re going to love where you’re at and looking back to see how far you have come is so satisfying. don’t share them, of course. unless you’re proud and want to celebrate. i have like 100-ish over the last two years and it’s insane to just flip through start to now.

Yeah I hate voice training. I'm getting surgery finally in August. I just lose my voice too often from straining to raise pitch, so hopefully that will help me.

And yeah, eyeliner is awesome, but a pain to apply. I've found I prefer the liquid instead of the pencils because it can be applied with very little pressure and goes exactly where you touch. Just took some practice to stabilize my arm while doing it and doing very short strokes which takes longer, but is less likely to require using remover and starting again.

The medical center of the university in my city had availability and is attached to the vocal therapist I use. Actually, this surgery is the only GAS surgery I've looked at that didn't have a waiting list, so it only is taking a while due to the insurance requiring various support letters to be written and the rest of the authorization process. Other care has taken years to get consultations, much less actual care.

On the eyeliner: I've found that not everyone is doing what I do: I rest my hand on my face to stabilise the pencil/brush when applying it. I would suck at freehand drawing it. But this way, I manage to not smudge anything! (Unless I forget and look up too soon)

I basically used my off-hand to pull my skin a little bit to help with the pencil, and rested my dominant hand as much as possible on my cheek. My eyelid moved a bit on the left side, but it was mostly fixed.

I just went with a super thin line around the top and bottom of the lid, and then put a small flick off to either side. Something simple for today.

I need to find someone who knows makeup (partner was never a girly girl and hated makeup) to sit down with and do some easier stuff. Honestly even a little bit I think might go a long way. I have a somewhat androgynous face and if it weren't for my facial hair I'm wrangling with every day, I think I'd almost pass.

I definitely started out trying to freehand the eyeliner but quickly gave up on that when my hand started trembling.

Damn, I should just find someone to do a full makeover from the shoulders up on me and walk me through the process so I might be able to replicate it.

I think I'm better at trying to copy a voice than I am at making my own, but it's helpful to feel how my throat changes while speaking, so hopefully I'll find my own voice soon enough.

I use an app called VoiceTools

It's icon has a microphone and pastel blue/pink trans flag motif in the background.

It has a lot of things on it I haven't even opened yet but one of the options will have you read a couple paragraphs and then at the end it will show you the stuff in the screenshot.

I use android, not sure if it's available elsewhere.

i voice trained and i never used these apps because of how inaccurate they can be, and femme voices sound different to different people.
