Fox News host Sean Hannity dedicated a segment of his Thursday show to deliver a message to Pope Leo XIV, suggesting he and others at the Vatican had totally lost sight of the true meaning of the bible and its teachings.

As an non-American who was baptised Catholic and observing US politics, I've always wondered how could the mostly Protestant, Christian nationalists would work with Catholics. Well, here goes my answer.

Also, I am seeing a repeat of history here. The German Catholics opposed Hitler while it is the Protestants who supported him. Oh how history circles back!

[–] ecvanalog@lemmy.world 3 points 52 minutes ago

But it’s not a cult, guys.

Evangelical nut bags vs the literal word of God.

[–] brownsugga@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago

Not saying the pope is perfect or anything, lotta baggage over there, but Trump is feeling pretty anti-Christy

[–] Iceman@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

And do don't get me started on this Jesus guy!

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

So Trump is the anti-pope now?

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 28 minutes ago

Keep him out of Avignon though.

I wonder if gaslighting religion is going to work on the MAGA base, they have to go against what they were taught their whole life now, a really test of the cult loyalty.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 1 points 50 minutes ago

Sunk Cost!

They've been telling themselves that they're persecuted for so long, the turn to realize they are the baddies would break most people.

They will Kowtow to an all knowing and powerful God that is speaking through the divine Trump (who may or may not be the antichrist). Because that all knowing and all powerful God has chosen to place him there and respecting authority is respecting God.

That trap hasn't sprung but the fear of it brought us to white nationalist storming the Capitol. It's like a cultural poison pill that has been boiled in conspiracy theories since the eighties.

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 1 points 1 hour ago

I bet Trump is now especially unhappy that the Pope is American otherwise he would be all like "that is what happens when you choose a European/Latin american pope"

[–] NottaLottaOcelot@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

MAGA is itself a religion. They are Christian because it gives them an excuse to treat women and dark skinned people badly, not because they believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

If they have to choose, MAGA aligns with their beliefs more than a segment of Christianity that many Evangelicals already dislike.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 1 points 38 minutes ago

MAGA is itself a religion.

A lot of people don't realise that ideology replaced religion as the source of mass movements. Ever since the rise of liberal individualism and scientific revolution, the role of religion diminished as the glue for community and source of knowledge. This is what Friedrich Nietzsche meant by "God is dead". It is not a coincidence that political movements centred on the mass mobilisation, namely socialism, communism and fascism, have sprung up around the same time.

Unfortunately, we are seeing the same thing unfolding again in our lifetime. The rise of neoliberalism, when Margaret Thatcher declared "there is no society, only individuals", is what initiated the death of community and social cohesion in recent memory. This led to plenty of lonely individuals who are easy preys for the far-right, as was the case before in Germany and Italy.

[–] TheVoiceOfRaison@thelemmy.club 1 points 3 hours ago

Yes, because they can twist it to their versions of what ever it is they believe. As long as Trump continues his war on immigration then all will be good amongst the majority of MAGA zealous.

[–] FrChazzz@lemmus.org 15 points 8 hours ago

Well, I'd argue that most of MAGA is evangelical, who tend to view Catholicism as either "fake Christianity" or a kind of quaint remnant of an older time that Protestantism fixed (and evangelicalism perfected). So most of them are already on board with the idea that the Pope is bad.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

MAGA churches want to speedrun towards Armageddon. War in the Middle East is what they crave.

He's The Fucking Pope, that's like, his whole thing

Person who has dedicated their entire life to the understanding, debate, discussion, research, philosophy to their religion or a man who at best is a grifter at worst guilty of serious crimes.

My new favorite passage " And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small café in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything.

I think ‘The President Is Wrong, The Pope Is Right’: Hannity Suggests Donald Has ‘Totally Lost Sight of the Bible and Its Teachings’ sounds more correct and truthful.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 24 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

They're laying the ground work to officially start their own religion.

They'll try to canonize prosperity gospel and make Trump their savior stand in.

[–] Lutra@lemmy.world 36 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Who is Hannity?

  • Housepainter.
  • He attended but did not graduate from:
      • Sacred Heart Seminary
      • St. Pius Seminary
      • New York University
      • Adelphi University
  • 1989 Volunteered as a DJ at KCSB, Santa Barbara, was fired, show dismissed.
  • 1990'ish - got another job at WVNN, Alabama
  • proceeded to talk on the radio ...

Why does this matter? - because it shows that Hannity doesn't matter. Any more than the 12 of us in this thread. - He is alive and has a mouth, are his accomplishments and skills, Yet his thoughts and opinions are played across the loudspeakers of the camp.

[–] Asafum@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago

Why does this matter? - because it shows that Hannity doesn’t matter

While I understand what you're saying, Hannity absolutely matters because millions of people listen to his bullshit. His past doesn't matter as he is a powerful propagandist now.

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 81 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

Lmao I love how folks are telling the VOICE OF GOD ON EARTH that he's wrong.

(I'm an atheist and don't believe it, but this whole situation is hilarious.)

[–] Catma@lemmy.world 23 points 22 hours ago (12 children)

Catholics are not real "Christians". So they dont believe in the Pope's position or respect the Pope.

I cannot fathom telling a guy who has dedicated his life to the church though that he doesn't understand the bible. Then again that is the republican MO, if you think you know better than an expert clearly you do.

[–] Nikelui@lemmy.world 19 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

I'm going to be pedantic, but it's the exact opposite of what you wrote. Catholics are a branch of Christians, who give more importance to the role of saints and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, among other differences.
So you should actually argue that they are not really Catholics, if they don't recognize the authority of the Pope.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

I had to read their comment a few times, but I think when they said "they," they were referring to people like Hannity.

Catholics are not real “Christians”. So they dont believe in the Pope’s position or respect the Pope.

Like "according to people like Hannity, Catholics are not real Christians. Therefore, people like Hannity don't believe in the Pope's position or respect the Pope"

Definitely a strange way to word it.

Be kind to others

-Bible, New Testament's teachings of Jesus

Being kind to others is evil, and it's not what Jesus would have stood for!

-Republicans

Reminder: be kind to others

-Pope

The Pope is a libtard.

-Faux News

^My basic understanding of whats going on.

Ex-cultist here. Specifically, fundamentalist Christian in the US.

So what we're seeing here is a division between in-groups and out-groups, and drawing that circle closer as a means of guarding against valid criticism. Consider; the standard response of most cults when they are under attack is to double down on its assertions that it is telling the truth. Most cults are built with a persecution complex as key part of exploiting their believers.

This tactic triggers their emotional response to rally to the defense of their cause, because "We're under attack! We're being hunted! The Worst Thing Possible is going to happen, and it is THIS PERSECUTOR'S fault!" This also forces a false choice in members who are doubting the leadership, forcing them to either cut all social ties and side with the enemy (they are trained to see this as a fate worse than death) or rehearse their dogma and rally without question.

bro, I am muslim so I have no idea how christian values work but even I can see this is heresy to an unbelievable degree. Your president calls himself the second Jesus, you cannot defend him against any religious person at that point, let alone the Pope.

Am I wrong, or is the thing the Pope said that has these freaks so upset basically like, "war is bad, don't do it"?

I mean for fuck sake...

[–] FrChazzz@lemmus.org 1 points 8 hours ago

What gets me is that the Pope is just saying pretty basic Christian teachings. Simply the kinds of stuff Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount. And the media is like "LOOK HE'S ATTACKING TRUMP!" The fact that he doesn't really specify the USA or anything says a lot about the state of things, where the basic Gospel of Jesus Christ is seen as inherently confrontational to the MAGA agenda.

You'all the number of times this administration has me fucking defending shitheads organizations because our idiots in charge are wrong, dumb, and morally off in BFE is too damn high.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 202 points 1 day ago (12 children)

Hannity thinks he (and Trump) knows more about how the Bible should be read and interpreted than the Pope?.......

Do these people even hear themselves?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

It's quite interesting how close hannity is to trump, he has seen having golf meetings with him

Y'all raised in normal places have no idea how much the average Evangelical thinks the Catholic church is straight up Satanic. My parents swore up and down when I was a kid that Pope JP2 was entirely evil to the core, as were all Catholics other than JFK, ironically.

Maybe 98.5% of Faux News viewers didn't bat an eye at this, and took yet another Big swig of the Kool-aid. This is an absolutely normal perspective for American Evangelicals.

[–] gigastasio@sh.itjust.works 36 points 1 day ago (3 children)

You wanna hear something that’ll absolutely destroy whatever little faith in humanity you may have left?

I once knew a guy who knew for a fact that Southern Baptist was the only true Christian religion. His reasoning? And he was absolutely dead serious when he said this and for him is was 100% a mic drop moment:

“Because his name was John the Baptist, not John the Catholic!”

This was something his aunt had said to him years ago, which I guess underscored its infallibility. He was by far the dumbest person I had ever met, and I’ve met a lot of dumb people.

We just need to come out and say it. These MAGA are all mentally ill and they need help immediately.

There is no other logical explanation for their actions.
