Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

I made a post asking specifically for DC fans their opinions. The people who responded aren’t actual fans—they’re just people who think they are fans but have never picked up a comic in their life. My question is: why do non-fans try so hard to engage with real fans?? You aren’t a real fan of DC, Marvel, or anything superhero-related, so you don’t deserve to be in the fandom space.

This is known as gatekeeping. There’s no such thing as a “real fan”. People from all walks of life want to be involved in a conversation about a thing they find enjoyable. If anything, we should welcome those looking to be involved or experienced with things they don’t yet understand.

This is a bit different if they’re confidently incorrect and argue, but I have to imagine this is not the majority. You can take on the role of an educator to help those that don’t know understand more.

The Linux community, and niches inside that community, are quite infamous for gatekeeping. Because you don't use a piece of software that other people use (for usually ideological reasons), you get attacked for it.

I would know, because I was attacked for proudly embracing the use of XLibre. I didn't care one bit.

Is shunning people for not using Linux also gatekeeping? I feel like I get that a lot.

I wouldn't shun people for not using Linux, as what software they use is their business. However, I will point out that if you use something proprietary, then technically, you don't own the hardware on the OS side of things.

Counter question: Why do some fans gatekeep their passion and insult those who they deem aren't "real fans" when it only creates a negative connotation with the fandom and convinces people with slight interest in the subject to avoid becoming a "real fan"?

I saw your other post here. You responded to someone who said they enjoyed the Absolute comics by telling them that your question isn't for them because they're not a real DC fan. If you ask me, that makes you the one who isn't a real fan, and in my opinion, makes your current and previous questions entirely disingenuous.

Because you have the strictest definition of "fan" which is "people who think EXACTLY the same as me about this franchise".

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Looks to me like you just arbitrarily decided without actual proof that people didn't read the comics, instead of considering that they DID read them and came to different conclusions than you.

This is really stretching the limits of the idea that there are no stupid questions.

The concept of “real fan” is flawed I think. I’ve never assembled a WH40K model or read any of the spinoff novels, to say nothing of playing the actual tabletop game, but I’d say I’m a fan of the franchise. I’ve played some of the video games (Space Marine, Mechanicus, Boltgun) and enjoyed them. I enjoy reading lore and worldbuilding stuff from wikis even if I’ve never touched the franchise itself, and my knowledge of 40k is almost exclusively from such wikis.
