There are a ton of selfhosted bookmark syncing and managing solutions.
In addition to https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted#bookmarks-and-link-sharing I found these:

I'm sure there are a ton more out there.

Basically all I want is to sync and somewhat categorize/tag bookmarks across my devices. Website archival, sharing and multi-user support is optional.

Going by GitHub stars I guess using Floccus with LinkWarden or Karakeep is the way to go?

Linkwarden looks slick and has some cool features, but was really more than I needed (and used more resources than I wanted my bookmark solution to).

I landed on Linkding, which is not as fancy as some other options but does everything I need it to.

Been using linkwarden with floccus. LW has an android app now too. I haven't really tried anything else and floccus could use some improvements but seems to work for me.

Sorry to suggest another one but Linkding is by far my favourite. It’s super lightweight and the tag filtering implementation makes it super efficient and easy to filter large collections.

++, long time user, it's perfect

I personally like Karakeep with Floccus a lot

Mozilla browser sync

Self-hostable if you want

[–] Lemmchen@feddit.org 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

https://mozilla-services.github.io/syncstorage-rs/

This still relies on Mozilla's login servers, so not fully selfhosted unfortunately.

It seems like you can selfhost the whole FxA stack in theory, but I haven't found much documentation for it.

Yeah, "make a 100% selfhost mozilla sync" is about number 12 on my long list of cool tech projects I swear I am going to get to.

EDIT: But seriously in terms of low effort and high security (due to E2E and relatively high number of eyes on Mozilla sources) it hits the sweet spot for me. Even though yes Mozilla and its advertisers know when and from what IP addresses I login to Mozilla services.

I think a lot of it comes down to any specific features you want. For example, I'm currently using Readeck because it has OPDS support, so I can save a link on my computer/phone and continue reading it on my ebook/epaper reader. Before that I used wallabag because of its tight integration with my RSS reader

[–] eodur@piefed.social 3 points 2 months ago

Slightly different function, but I use KaraKeep for managing bookmarks and I never use bookmarks in my actual browser.

[–] Brewchin@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I've been using Wallabag for years, after leaving Pocket, then just sharing links between devices using browser bookmarks or sync, and trying another solution that was shiny but lacking (can't recall the name).

Wallabag has extensions for most browsers, apps for iOS and Android (that hook into the "Share with..." functionality), and runs in a low-resource Docker container. The web UI isn't pretty, but it's functional.

I have SWAG+Authelia (another Docker stack) and Cloudflare sitting in front of it, so has all the SSL and MFA needed.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I never felt the need. What does such a solution actually do?

[–] non_burglar@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

For me, the idea is to sync bookmarks between devices.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Right into the browsers? Into all browsers on all devices?

[–] irmadlad@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I've been using LinkWarden for a long time now. I also use Readeck for 'read it later' kind of data but it could be used to bookmark. I use Karakeep for archiving. I have not tried Betula, Linkwallet, Nextcloud Bookmarks, Postmarks, or xBrowserSync.

https://gosuki.net/
This one?

Looks like it doesn't come with docker and seems like you don't get access to the full source on the free version?

[–] wildbus8979@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Docker? Meh. If you need it it's like 5 lines of docker files to write.

Yeah the p2p sync is a paid feature. The master mode sync is not however.

[–] Lemmchen@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If I write my own Dockerfiles to tag my own images I also have to run my own update management.
I like to outsource this, so all I have to do is a simple docker compose pull (or in reality, let Dockhand or watchtower handle it).

[–] wildbus8979@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You don't have to make an image though. Just start with a Debian or alpine base image and install the software within

[–] Lemmchen@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

Sure, but that doesn't make any difference in the maintenance effort required.

[–] wildbus8979@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

That's the one

[–] humancrayon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I’ve been using Zotero as my bookmark solution and it’s been amazing. I have not setup sync across different devices (or figured out how that would work), but being able to snapshot and page in time and have it forever has been a life saver.

[–] CalvusRex@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Zotero? Really? Isn't that like massively overkill for bookmarks? I mean, to each their own, but I guess if you want source citations, screenshots, web pages and more to sync bookmarks, have at it mate!

[–] rsolva@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I use the built-in firefox bookmarking feature. It syncs between all my devices and is just sitting right there waiting to be used 😌

I have tried many a bookmark service, but nothing has been more effective than a flat list of tagged bookmarks directly in the browser!

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 1 points 2 months ago

It’s not the best solution (but it works for me) but I use dokuwiki and the wiki2bookmark plugin.

[–] vjprema@fosstodon.org 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

@Lemmchen I have been through a few of these including nextcloud, floccus sync, Wallabag.

The clear winner, and likely permanent solution for me ended up being Linkding.

Its blazing fast, simple, just a web interface, no sync tools to set up in each device/browser, add links using a simple bookmarklet in the browser bar (no extensions/sync). It has a very similar vibe to miniflux if you use that for RSS. I wish more self hosted apps were in this bloat-free minimalist style, its so good.

[–] Lemmchen@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Unfortunately it only has tag suggestions when there's letters in the tag field already. I'm probably going to use a lot of tags/categories and I might not be able to remember all of them. In this case I'd need to cycle through all first letters to make sure to not miss one.
I'm not sure that's what I want to do.
