To my knowledge, cats do best with bird & rodent meats. They don't need to be eating anything with hoves or fins... Though they will probably disagree about the fishies

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

They will disagree violently about the fishes! I had a cat that was absolutely crazy about salmon!

Cats stereotypically love tuna.

No cat in the history of cats has ever swam out to sea and caught their own tuna. No member of family felidae, extant or extinct, has ever achieved that.

[–] Asidonhopo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Ummmmm, sea lion

[–] lath@piefed.social 7 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Outer sea yes, on shores, debatable. Some felines are known to go for a dip now and again. Are tuna known for coming close to land?

[–] dewritoninja@pawb.social 7 points 7 hours ago

Have you seen how big is a tuna? I think. A tuna has a better chan6ge of eating a cat if it gets too close

Tuna are deep sea creatures. There is, however, a good chance that at one point many washed ashore dead, allowing the cats to develop a taste for them.

I saw a barn kitten try to take down a cow, it was hilarious!

He was sitting in a barn window, looking down at this cow beneath him, switching his tail, and I was like "Oh, no..."

Suddenly this little black and white kitten LEAPS down on the back of the cow, digging in with claws on all 4 paws, and going to town trying to bite as hard as he could!

ROWR-ROWR-ROWR-ROWR! ROWR!

The cow did not notice.

It was a soul of tiger in a body of a kitten.

A carnivore sees an herbivore, makes the logical conclusion, and enthusiastically implements a plan.

I want to not believe you, but my cat has tried to take me down (we wrassle)

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 11 points 12 hours ago

I had a cat who would hide under the dining room table, wait for someone to walk by, then dart out and try to hamstring them... so... yeah... Bite size apex predators!

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 8 points 12 hours ago

You fancy yourself a wrassler, huh?

I bet you couldn't even wrassle a whole cow

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 41 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Pretty sure she's going to have that ego, regardless because she's a cat.

[–] nightofmichelinstars@sopuli.xyz 20 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Her ancestors brought down bigger and she knows it.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 4 points 12 hours ago

I have heard that feral house cats will occasionally hunt and kill prey that is much larger than themselves. IIRC, I think they were giving deer as an example. At least it was an animal similar in size to a smaller deer.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

I have 11 cats. Plus three more in my custody. If they worked together they could take down a cow. This is important because cows outnumber people on my block.

But I also want more cat friendly cat food because I too understand what cats want in cat food. I made this 10 years ago:

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 7 points 12 hours ago

My brother in Christ, 11 cats is far too much of the right amount of cats to have.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Vole, rabbit, and shrew for my outdoor babies.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Vole, mole, mouse, cotton rat are the favorites here.

I did find a rabbit skeleton underneath my house. Is the only rabbit I've ever seen of my property. But I don't know if it was there before we moved in or not. And I don't know how my cats would have gotten underneath the house to put it there. So I can't confirm that as a confirmed kill.

[–] Yosmonkol@piefed.social 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Was the skeleton disarticulated? If not then the rabbit most likely wasn't killed by predetors or scavenged. If it was hunted you'd see bones scattered and quite a few missing. We have foxes, hawks, and coyotes in our area and every now and then we find bits and pieces of their leftovers in the yard and on the porch but never the whole thing.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

It was intact. Maybe it somehow found its way under but couldn't get out. Or it got dragged in by a cat, partially munched and then forgotten about.

[–] zip@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 13 hours ago

You may want to look up Mouser brand cat food. If I remember correctly, it was created by someone who had the same thoughts. I don't know how healthy it is or anything, but I think it's a neat idea...even though I feel bad for the poor little critters put into it.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Who got that T-Rex in gravy

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

we humans eat dinosaurs regularly. it's like the most common meat we eat,

like we eat Dino babies for breakfast

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 3 points 2 hours ago

We even shape them back into dino shapes

[–] felixwhynot@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

My cat can have a hamburger sometimes, as a treat

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 12 hours ago

I just help cats whenever

"You brought that dog, man?!"

" Yeah I...was afraid he'd kill my parents' cows..."

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It probably doesn't even taste like beef. Try it yourself.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 4 points 16 hours ago

At no point could Jessie realistically take down a cow.

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)
