Ah yes, the Performance Penalty. Instead of leading the team, management relies on a selection of competent overachievers.

When your boss knows that you don't have kids and not married.
Literally kills me. "What you've got video games and jerking off to do? We really need you to cover this overtime". Verbatim from my chief awhile back. It's not like he's wrong... but come on man. I pick up a good bit of OT as it is before being personally asked.
For all he knows the ot is preventing you from finding a partner
Well I have a girlfriend who lives with me and has for 3 years. Everyone knows that and always busts my balls for not marrying her yet. My chief was really just fucking with me but it was 50/50 funny and annoying.
Tell them you got other people's kids to watch so they can go to work, someone has to be part of the village. If they press you on it then ask them for their availability because lots of families need free babysitter.
Hell might even make them hesitant to schedule outside of ability
I've been in Management for the last few years, some teams were 60+ people and some were only about 15. Your chief is a dick that needs to get their hands dirty. Any boss that isn't willing to respect the time of their team, whether on the clock or off the clock, doesn't deserve to be a boss.
I knew the hours of everyone on my team. I never gave a shit if you had kids or a party waiting for you after work, what you do after your scheduled hours is up to you. If I didn't have enough employees for the work we had, that's my problem and not yours.
Eh. When your boss has four people in the office to do six people's jobs, and the VP just said they're cutting headcount by two.
I haven't been in that situation, but I don't understand why you wouldn't just continue working your normal hours. If they give you more tasks, well I guess it'll take longer. It's not like you're missing out on a promotion since they clearly don't value you anyways
It really depends on your situation and on the work you're doing. If you have a project that you honestly care about that you think is really good then you usually want to see it get done. So you might make the decision to overwork yourself even if you objectively shouldn't. And bosses love to set that up, so they'll give you a bunch of annoying crap that you don't think is valuable. But they make you do it and then you end up having to work later in the evening to get done the stuff that you actually care about. Of course, that's something that we all need to be very careful about, but in the short run it's hard to stop.
And another situation that's even worse is that you might lose your job. Sometimes telling the boss no means that you will be unemployed and if you need to make that money to pay the bills then you might be f*****.
I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just continue working your normal hours.
Some of it comes down to real social pressure. People work harder when they've literally got the boss at their desk saying "We need to hit Deadline X or Consequences Y will happen". For people past their breaking point, I tend to see them work less. If you're already on the job hunt (or if you've landed a job or queued for retirement or whatever), enthusiasm for doing your current job plummets. If you think you're about to get fired, same.
But for folks who genuinely believe they've got a future at the firm - at least for another year or three - it often boils down to "Do I want to be stressed forever, or just get over this hump and survive until things die down?" Hitting the deadline and getting the project over the line typically comes with a refractory period of sorts. A slowdown in work hours and a more relaxed pace. Missing the deadline means even more work and even more stress and even more of my boss at my desk (or my boss's boss or my boss's boss's boss) staring at my computer and asking why the thing isn't done yet.
Not missing the deadline just conditions your boss to do the same next time.
Lose lose situation type shi
Missing the deadline undermines your position in the firm and marks you out as unreliable for the better projects and promotions.
Well, given your own description of the scenario
When your boss has four people in the office to do six people’s jobs, and the VP just said they’re cutting headcount by two.
I would not count on ever getting a promotion or better project anyway.
One of my coworkers said she loves working with me because she's not scared of running into problems because I have the solution to 90% of what she runs into. I was like bitch. what. but then I remembered she doesn't fight me on having to take charge nurse all the time and like. A few weeks ago she got in trouble for something one of the junior nurses didn't handle quite right (tbh none of us would though that pt should not have been on our unit) and getting in trouble for shit other people do is exactly why I fight like hell not to be charge nurse ever so like. Just for you. None of you other people. If you've ever asked "well why can't Apy be charge she has the most experience!??!???!" Exactly. Y'all stupid and idw be on the hook for your shit. I'd rather just solve the problem on the sidelines and you can take all the credit for whether it works or not (and like 90% of the time it will so 🫅)
Also if I have to deal with that demented old bint of a house supervisor imma throw hands (although months ago I said to myself that if she writes me up for a third bullshit that's found completely unsubstantiated I'm filling a complaint of targeted harassment and I think someone actually alerted her to that subtext because I think she got in trouble for the two complaints she wrote about me. One because when they pulled the tapes for me being insubordinate she was standing over me in the nurses station shouting at me for questioning a safety issue and one for snooping in my patients charts trying to find dirt on me). And that second one she came to the unit to try to rub it in my face and I had that charge nurse I mentioned with me and just giggled in her face the whole time and she kept saying "I don't know what your problem is with me" and I just really wish I could've been there when someone pointed out that girl you are the one picking these fights!
