Daggerfall is the prequel to Skyrim. I'd never played it until seeing it for free on Steam recently.

I really hate this comparison. Like, yes, the Daggerfall map was huge. You could spend like 6+ hours walking from town to town, but there was nothing to see or find during that walk. Having a huge world is only impressive if it has stuff in it. Playing Daggerfall without using fast travel is functionally impossible and trying to do so is just an awful experience.

It was a technically impressive feat at the time to have a map with an actual realistic scale to it, but it just highlighted to me why games shouldn't do that. Yes, it's ridiculous that you can walk from city to city in Skyrim in like 5-10 minutes, but that makes for a better gameplay experience.

Yeah, Daggerfall is not a good map for comparison. Probably Morrowind.

Why haven't people filled it in

it was generatedso what you encounter should change every time just like the dungeons. I mean daggerfall was the first I played I think and I think it was the second but maybe I am mixing up arena and daggerfall.

A prequel is released after but set before the previous instalment, it’s not the opposite of sequel.

Glad I'm not the only one bothered by that usage. I believe a more accurate word to replace it would be predecessor

If you were going to play Daggerfall without the fast travel you might as well play Desert Bus instead, at least that game would require you to be physically at the controller between destinations

I know it's fun to clown on how "empty" the Daggerfall map was, but that game was loaded with content. Daggerfall had more game mechanics that any other TES game. With the possible exception of Morrowind (because it was so damned good), every TES game since has been disappointing to me.

Was the new morrowind rerelease worth buying?

I played the shit out of the original on Xbox, yet barely made any progress since I was just running around doing random things.

What new Morrowind release? 🤨 They've only barely hinted at the possibility of there being a Morrowind remake in the vein of Oblivion's like a few days ago.

Well whatever the newest one is. I thought it was morrowind, but now I realize I've got to figure out what it is.

It was Oblivion they re-released recently. :)

Sorry, I have no idea if the re-release was worth buying. I still have my original CDs for the PC version and another copy on Steam. I don't really want to buy it yet again even though Bethesda would love that.

[–] Teppa@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Fair enough. Suffice to say my Xbox is long gone.

Size doesn't necessarily mean better.

1 is mostly barren and randomly generated while the other is entirely handcrafted and purpose built.
