I haven't seen any positive response to DLSS5 except by people who literally only see shapes and colors when they look at art. IDK who thinks making random parts of scenes visually louder instead of the way the artist intended is an improvement.

Jensen Huang had to come out and tell people to stop making fun of DLSS5. AI isn’t going to fall has hard as NFT’s but it’s certainly losing popularity.

Here's an opinion: Whoever decided to reveal DLSS5 deserves a raise. By Nvidia's standards, that is. Everyone is talking about that instead of discussing Nvidia's engagement with Palantir. DLSS5 was a master stroke.

Over compression and blown out...sounds a lot like what they started doing to good audio 30 years ago!

I see a future like today in the audio world. We have those of us who actually know good sound and have a trained ear (note, not talking about snake oil audio bs. My system is under a grand and blows away many systems 5x its price because I dont waste money on idiotic shit like cables )Then there are those who prefer a sausage waveform and clipping. And they are the masses. The same will happen with video games.

was dlss ever worth it? It just seemed to make games run worse without any significant improvement to fidelity.

Absolutely but it depends on what kind of DLSS we're talking about, since nvidia uses the term to talk about multiple very different technologies. DLSS framegen can make things look smoother but increases latency and introduces visual artifacts. I would never turn it on for something like a first-person shooter, but I could maybe see myself using it in a game like Civ VII where a few extra milliseconds of latency isn't a big deal.

The really important one though is DLSS upscaling. Back in the day if you ran a game at lower resolution (usually for performance reasons) and upscaled it it would look like shit. DLSS upscaling lets you do that and have it look almost as good as rendering it natively, as long as you don't push it too far. It didn't work super well when it was first released, but these days it looks great and can really improve performance.

The benefits of DLSS yassification are questionable.

Honestly, DLAA was always the best use of the technology. There is no better AA than a downscaled higher resolution, and with super sampling you could get that without actually needing to natively run the higher resolution.

DLSS, FSR, XeSS, etc are all great for extending the life of older cards. Unfortunately, the GPU manufacturers found this out pretty early on and keep updating the technology to be more and more performance expensive, meaning you need a newer card to get any benefit.

Therefore no, the new versions are not really worth anything other than artificially boosting your framerate, which at that point just dropping the render resolution will probably give you more or less the same result.

The future is coming whether we fight it or not. High schoolers fuckin love AI slop. Eventually, all of us who remembered the old days of human created media will die, and the people who grew up with slop being the only thing they know will take our place, and our societal standards will lower more and more.

I just hope I wont get any more Chainsaw Man spoilers shoved down my throat. (I have most mangas in my shelf but didn't get around to read most of them yet.) It's unfortunate I can't discuss the series with fans on the internet because the always post unprompted major spoilers. /rant end

Fuck AI though. Useful tech but society has ruined it in record time. And by society I mean mostly tech CEOs.

Honestly people are making a big deal out of this but I don't get it, the time for the outrage was when both AMD (2023) and Nvidia (2022) introduced frame generation into their respective upscalers. It was always gonna be downhill from there.

[–] Unboxious@ani.social 9 points 3 weeks ago

I mean, lots of people were and still are annoyed by frame gen too - especially with the deceptive way nvidia uses it in their marketing (claiming a 5070 will be as fast as a 4090 when it actually just makes more fake frames).

gemini seems pretty sure the image is ai generated.

SpoilerI think gemini is wrong on all points, and this is actually from an anime, even though I am not sure which .

[–] hypertown@ani.social 11 points 3 weeks ago

It's literally a scene from the Chainsaw Man Movie...
Never trust AI for recognizing AI-generated slop. Even tools that were made for recognizing slop work like 50% of the time.
