Good. Now can we call that cancerous corporation Facebook again?

[–] dorumon@lemmy.cafe 4 points 7 hours ago

Oh my God it's finally fucking over. I can use a Quest headset again without being inaudatited with ads essentially from Horizon Worlds. I can use the headset again without having to constantly hack it.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 26 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I tried Horizons once. Confused TF out of me what its purpose was other than to have random people screaming into mics and yelling n**** at you all the time.

It was not a fun experience and I never saw the point. I play VR games for VR experiences with actual fun in them.

So VR Discord?

The best comment on this I've seen...

It turns out, to the horror of techbros like Zuck, that the actual core demographics for VR worlds are not edgy cyberpunk antiheroes whose coolness could rub off on them, but femboy otaku who want to go drinking with friends while dressed as fabulous anime girls without even having leave their home and trans furries who want to party at visually spectacular virtual raves then pirate movies and have virtual cuddle piles.

Which... isn't very monetizable for normies.

...yet. 😈

God dam I miss second life.

this is happening on VRChat, not meta horizon worlds

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 48 minutes ago

Let me introduce you to Resonite.

[–] dustyData@lemmy.world 15 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Because meta wasn't good for it, hence why it wasn't popular at all.

[–] nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 14 hours ago
[–] night_petal@piefed.social 2 points 10 hours ago

It's been happening on Second Life for quite a long time now.

[–] veeesix@lemmy.ca 124 points 19 hours ago (5 children)

What a comical waste of $80 Billion. Coulda bought two Twitters with that money instead and still come out on top.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 111 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Coulda fed an entire country in the real world

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 26 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Huh? Ohh, you joke, poors aren't real people!

[–] Blaster_M@lemmy.world 50 points 17 hours ago

$80bn for VR Miis that didn't have legs until last year

$80bn for "We have VRChat at home"

[–] northendtrooper@lemmy.ca 40 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

I cannot fathom how $80billion was spent without anyone skimming off the top...and the middle....and the bottom.

[–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 26 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

I’m entirely convinced the whole thing was invented to scam Meta. So congrats to all the people who got paid along the way!

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 12 hours ago

I’m entirely convinced the whole thing was invented to scam Meta.

Yes, it was suckerberg.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 8 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I wonder if John Carmack is among them? I remember him complaining that internal politicking made any kind of progress like wading in mud

He is the forefront expert in WADing

[–] nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 15 hours ago

they developed arguably good headsets and then sold them at a loss

[–] XLE@piefed.social 15 points 18 hours ago

Meanwhile, OpenAI claims their losses will get near $80 billion before they start turning a profit. You've got to spend money to make money. Or to fail spectacularly. However the saying goes.

[–] Blaster_M@lemmy.world 13 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Instead they bought Moltbook, the reddit for ai bots (only ai bots can post)

[–] JustTesting@lemmy.hogru.ch 5 points 15 hours ago

Actually anyone can post using the API, and many people did. Lots of the heavily publicized posts were written by humans

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)
[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 5 points 17 hours ago

zuckerbot needed friends just like him, so he bought them

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Does this mean I don't have to see the hideous Meta Horizon avatar of myself I never asked for anymore? They should let me use my VRChat one in the home environment instead.

[–] Luci@lemmy.ca 60 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Tbh I always thought it was unreleased and still being developed. My shock when I found out it was available and no one used it.

Came off like VRChat for idiots.

[–] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 7 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

They tried REALLY hard to get us to use it for meetings when I worked there, but nobody wanted to give up their legs ¯\(ツ)

[–] eleijeep@piefed.social 1 points 10 minutes ago

If you don't have legs then how can you go pantsless in a video call? Checkmate Zuck!

[–] Luci@lemmy.ca 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I hope work didn’t buy headsets for everyone just for that

[–] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 2 points 9 hours ago

Nah, they just told us to use our own if we had them. And of course, we couldn't get a discount on them or anything, either.

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 32 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Reading the article, Horizon Worlds is not shutting down, just the VR access. Apparently they’ve moved it to apps you access on iPhone and Android. I see the appeal even less; that seems like Second Life mobile.

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 12 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

I loaded up my vr headset the other day for the first time in.... A year? Maybe more.
And I was surprised to find my own custom decorated room was gone and instead I had a balcony to that Horizon place.
I could see little people running and jumping around and some portals or doorways and other stuff.

Is that what they are shutting down?
So what happens to VR headsets' "home screen"?
Does it go back to the way it was?

[–] Shindo66@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

That is what they are shutting down. It was just a way to try to advertise stuff.

[–] comador@lemmy.world 32 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

'Meta will shut down'

Hurray! oh? There's more to the title? Damn.

[–] AngryRedHerring@lemmy.world 11 points 17 hours ago

I can't wait for the day that I'm forced to switch from a discontinued Meta to a homebrewed OS that supports my library.

[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 12 points 16 hours ago

Was this the thing with legless avatars from the uncanny valley? No idea how they wasted so much money - they'd have done better to employ a good gaming studio to make something fun that looked good. Could have saved billions there.

[–] realitista@lemmus.org 3 points 12 hours ago

I actually can't figure out how to access it. I have some portal in my home environment but I can't go through it.

[–] _NetNomad@fedia.io 14 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The company shared that it would go "all-in" on the mobile version of the platform in February.

TIL there's a non-VR version of Horizon. wasn't the whole point that it was VR? what's even left if you take out the VR, just voice chat?

[–] zurohki@aussie.zone 3 points 14 hours ago

The monetization?

[–] Tamps@feddit.uk 11 points 18 hours ago

This is good news! I quite like the Quest 3 hardware, but I hated having Horizon rammed down my throat through the UI. I guess that’s because they were desperate to drive engagement.

[–] SouthFresh@lemmy.world 13 points 19 hours ago (1 children)
[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 11 points 19 hours ago

I wanted them to feel better about themselves

[–] melfie@lemy.lol 5 points 16 hours ago

They gonna change the company to something other than Meta now?

[–] timestatic@feddit.org 2 points 13 hours ago

Damn it always seemed just like beta software to me when I used it on my VR headset

[–] Kraiden@piefed.social 4 points 16 hours ago
[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Come on now, Zuckerberg doesn’t have 20 accounts, 12 at the most

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 10 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I don't know why you'd think that, Human McHuman, YesImHuman, NotaLizard, NotaRobot, Normal Man, CEOsRPeople, MeritocracyWins are all owned by zuckerbot
