My memory is vaguely recalling something about the North American plate being squished by the Eurasian and Pacific plates and there being a relief zone in the middle around the mid west where micro fault lines are forming and the start of a new mountain range is expected to be possible in the next few millennia.

Something about the unexplained part feels clickbaity here. Wouldn't the above explain that? Now I need to go dig around for an article I read years ago...
