The old one is undoubtedly a better movie, but the new one is undoubtedly a much better mario movie

I always said the Mario movie I got as an adult was the one I wanted as a kid, and the one I got as a kid was the one I wanted as an adult
I did not watch either. I might watch the old one though.
I liked it as a kid. I still like it as an adult. It's a complete mess though. They changed dialogues on the fly, people were often drunk as fuck while filming, it's hardly even a mario movie. Maybe that's what makes it great, idk.
people were often drunk as fuck while filming
The Do the Mario dance lives in my head rent-free.
That's from a different thing iirc (the super mario bros super show)
Considering all the crazy shit we've found out...
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the change from clear good and evil in 80s/90s kids media to modern "we're all just buddies at the end" wasn't some kind of psyop to normalize the next generations to tolerate and handwave powerful people doing horrible shit.
Like, there was zero blurry lines back then.
If an oligarch was destroying the environment and harming people in the pursuit of power, John Leguizamo would show up and go Luigi all over some asses.
And we had Captain frickin' Planet taking names and kicking ass, but now it's all "well coal is good actually"
Captain planet? No way - it's all about Coalie now!

This one fascinates me - did they cover up the woman and the girls face on purpose?
Looks exactly like those old Russian propaganda posters
that is an insult to socialist realism
No, it doesn't.
Those were lit, the one above sucks noodles.

The art was way better on that shit.
Somehow the boy didn't get covered up, hmmmmmmmm
Hahahha WTF
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the change from clear good and evil in 80s/90s kids media to modern “we’re all just buddies at the end” wasn’t some kind of psyop to normalize the next generations to tolerate and handwave powerful people doing horrible shit.
I don't think it was quite an intentional one, as much as it is that with media having a wider spread, the companies behind them want them to be less controversial, and more palatable to a wider audience. It's a lot easier to do that if everyone was getting along at the end, since it's a safe option that doesn't risk any controversy over the audience thinking the treatment was too extreme, or having to risk offending the ratings board, or any of that.
Put a young audience in front of a Bugs Life.
You're 10000% right in my book. All planned.
A Bug's LIfe even had Kevin Spacey! With possibly the best line in any animated movie ever: "first rule of leadership, princess: everything is your fault."
You're right, but some of that is actually "in-universe" for Mario games. For example, Mario 3 is a stage play. That's why the set pieces in the levels look the way they do, and why you can get behind the set using the white blocks.
The OG was fantastic! Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper! The Goombas! The elevator scene!
Everyone was drunk or on something during the filming!
John leguizamo has openly shared how awful the film shooting was and wanted it over.
Goomba! :O :D
I actually didn’t mind the OG Mario Bros movie because I don’t look at it through the lens of the Mario games. It’s just campy and crazy.
I agree with that. The OG is a great scifi cyberpunk B movie that gets weird, but it is not a good Mario Bros movie.
I think it’s better that way
There's a deleted scene at the end where some game designers from Nintendo show up and ask Mario and Luigi permission to turn their story into a game. The joke is that the movie isn't a bad Mario adaptation, the game is.
Oh that’s funny. I bought it on dvd a few months ago, I’ll have to check out the special features to see if it’s there.
Exactly how I see it.
The second Mario Movie lost me when it played Thunderstruck while Donkey Kong and Mario were fighting.
I loves me some Akka Dakka, but there’s such a deep musical well to draw from with all the Mario games that it made it feel even more like an unscrupulous cash grab.
Yeah I didn't make it very far into that movie. Everything about it felt wrong. Crazy that it was so well received, even by video game fans.
I've never seen anyone say "Akka Dakka" before and clearly I was missing out. Also, agreed on all points.
An Aussie guy told me once that's what they call it, at least some of them
I'm pretty sure that Jack Black contractually requires that all projects he works on have to include at least one AC/DC song.
Fuck Jaybles

The new one works great for a wider audience. The OG is pretty funny and I definitely enjoy a lot of the dialogue.
The old one had references as well. And it was nice that it was different. It made it fun to think about what all the things were meant to represent. And also, it was a bit like the games were just an abstraction of reality, with things made easy to understand and kid-friendly.
To be fair the majority of modern movies are just cameos and references. So while it might have sucked (don't know haven't seen it and don't intend to) it's probably on par with the modern craptacular that is cinema.
That said I have always loved the OG Mario movie because its just Fun. Outside of that one movie I never cared for anything related to Nintendo, thats how great I think that one stupid movie is.
I think the new one is funnily written. Sorry for being a pleb.
It's a cute fun little animated mario movie. There's nothing wrong with it, and there are funny parts in it. It's ok to enjoy.

Well, one was based off the video game, one loosely referenced.
Niether was a great movie, but kid me enjoyed the John Legluigi performance alot. Guess it depends on what ya like.
I loved is as a kid and still thoroughly appreciate it as an adult. Not sure the new one will stand the test of time. Though maybe one day when people are simply amazed that computers were ubiquitous and powerful enough to do such things, it will gain its own unique novelty...
Actually they were red and green collared...
Only because they didn't use their classic colors.
