Trump has no power to “decree” that voters must present ID or to end mail-in balloting. But that doesn’t mean he can’t at least try both. Under the Insurrection Act or some other dusty statute, he can declare a state of emergency. Then he can decide that said state permits, nay requires, him to take extraordinary measures. On October 5, say, that might mean outlawing early voting. By October 13, it might mean no mail-in voting. By October 29, a reminder that all voters must present ID to vote. And by Sunday, November 1, two days before the election—an announcement that all these “reasonable” measures have alas failed, and he is now forced, against his will, to postpone the election.

I was more than willing to believe that Trump might try to cancel elections or take over the media. But even I, when I sat down to think about exactly how, couldn’t quite pin down the specifics. No president had ever tried to do either of those things, so how exactly could Trump pull them off?

Man, they wrote it all down as much as a year before the 2024 election. It was called Project 2025. They even posted it online, for everyone to read.

That’s one of the primary things that utterly baffles and infuriates me - THIS WAS ALL PUBLIC.

They literally wrote out their playbook, and yet there are TONS of people and media pundits and “opposition” politicians going like

For fucks sake, you are not allowed to be surprised by this.

I remember when project 2025 came out there was a lot of idiotic rhetoric about it such as "its just a think tank bro" and "they aren't elected so the document is meaningless".

Ironic now that Jim Brewer is a maggot

[–] jakemehoff11@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

FYI: That's not Jim Breuer, it's Brian Regan

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ah fuck you're right.

They both have Jim Carey face

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

Jim Carey face

Who, funnily, is also a real piece of shit 👍

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh, huh, I didn’t realize 🤦‍♂️

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah I sadly didn't know until recently

I read it and thought it would be their downfall. I really thought newspapers would tear that thing apart. I thought it would be over for them long before the election.

It reads like, paraphrasing:

"We will take all the good things away and spit in your face"

This also has happened in other counties before. I know the US likes to see itself as special but the overall patterns of fascist government takeovers and more gradual democratic backsliding have been well established by history and political science.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 37 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This has been blatantly obvious for 1 year.

[–] oxysis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Hey now, it’s been blatantly obvious since January 6th, 2021

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

And January 6th was blatantly obvious well before January 6th, 2021.

Trump has no power to “decree” that voters must present ID or to end mail-in balloting.

But he can send ICE to polling stations and arrest anyone that looks like they would vote Democrat

Americans hoping they can dig themselves out of this mess by voting are just continuing to push the goal post for action down the line

The best non violent option is nation wide general strike.

Time is fast running out for the corporate captured Democrats to be on the right side of history.

exactly right… which is why these "only on weekends" marches will do nothing

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Those are to show people that they're not alone, start conversations, threaten by implication, and show people they can trust each other to act when the time calls them to do so. Not every fight needs to be the decisive victory. But I do understand the frustration. Look to Minneapolis for example of action.

You already lost mail in voting without even realizing. The Supreme Court said post office doesn’t legally have to deliver mail and can’t be sued for it. Do you really think any mail in ballots will be delivered?, when they already changed it so anything delivered after the date doesn’t count? You’ve already lost and don’t even realize it.

not murican but your point stands for them

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My first reaction "everyone just wear red hats to go vote". But then when they rig it anyway they can say "look at all these supporters it makes sense".

I think its game over for usa...

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

The USA was on the verge of an epic fall and, instead of jumping away from the ledge, they said "what if we set ourselves on fire? maybe we'll float?"

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

He tried before already.

The regime has detailed plans (which were published) to subvert the election in cooperation with ally states. The regime has poured obscene amounts of money into arming a masked militia of 'federal agents', currently murdering & disappearing dissenters, with impunity.

The closing gambit in the face of inevitable major dissent is to provoke violence and use it as an excuse to declare martial law which includes suspension of Habeas Corpus.

The corporate captured Democrats are not going to save you.

Welcome to dictatorship.
